Framework’s May 29, 2024 Laptop 13 update moved the modular 13.5-inch notebook to Intel Core Ultra Series 1 processors. The same launch added an optional 2880×1920, 120 Hz display, a redesigned 9.2MP-sensor webcam and business configurations with Windows 11 Pro, Autopilot and a three-year extended limited warranty. The announcement’s $949 pre-built and $799 DIY prices were launch-era figures, not confirmed current prices.
What Framework launched in 2024
Framework announced the Intel Core Ultra Series 1 Laptop 13 on May 29, 2024, with preorders opening immediately and shipments forecast to begin in August 2024. It retained the Laptop 13’s modular design: memory, storage, ports, input components and other modules can be replaced or upgraded rather than treating the computer as a sealed appliance.
Framework founder Nirav Patel wrote, “We’ve upgraded nearly every part since first shipping in 2021, and we read through press reviews and feedback constantly to find ways to improve it further.” That statement describes the company’s development approach, not an independent test result.
Intel Core Ultra Series 1 specifications
Framework said the Intel platform offered up to six Performance cores and eight Efficient cores, with support for as much as 96 GB of DDR5 memory. The company also described a redesigned thermal system and revised fan-control algorithms intended to reduce heat and noise.

Framework also claimed improved efficiency and longer battery life, particularly during video playback. Those statements are manufacturer claims; the official material reviewed for this article did not provide independent battery-life measurements, benchmark scores or comparative performance figures.
Optional 2.8K display: what you get
The major panel upgrade is a 13.5-inch 2880×1920 display. Framework lists 256 pixels per inch, a 120 Hz refresh rate with variable-refresh support, 500 nits of brightness, 1500:1 contrast and a matte anti-glare finish.
- Resolution: 2880×1920
- Refresh rate: 120 Hz with variable refresh support
- Brightness: 500 nits
- Contrast: 1500:1
- Surface: Matte, anti-glare
- Scaling: Framework said Linux users could conveniently use 2:1 scaling
The panel has rounded corners and was adapted from a panel originally designed for another company, according to Framework. Buyers could select it when configuring a new DIY system or purchase it later as a Marketplace upgrade for an existing Laptop 13. Compatibility and pricing should be checked against the specific machine and market before ordering.

Webcam and microphones
The upgraded webcam uses an OmniVision 9.2MP image sensor. Framework says it combines each group of four subpixels into larger, more light-sensitive pixels instead of operating at the sensor’s native resolution, producing 1080p video intended to perform better in low light. The company also moved to lower-noise microphones.

The announcement did not establish a measured low-light score, microphone signal-to-noise ratio or video-quality ranking.
Business configurations
Framework described specific business configurations rather than a universal feature of every Laptop 13. Those configurations included Windows 11 Pro, Microsoft Autopilot enabled out of the box and a three-year extended limited warranty. The warranty and software terms should therefore be confirmed on the exact business SKU; they should not be assumed for consumer DIY or pre-built configurations.

Launch pricing and availability
At the May 2024 launch, Framework listed starting prices of $949 USD for pre-built systems and $799 USD for the DIY Edition. These were historical launch prices and are not evidence of today’s price in any country.
Framework’s October 1, 2024 update said Intel Core Ultra Series 1 systems were in stock at that time. It also reported the 2.8K Display Kit and USB-C Expansion Cards in stock, while the second-generation webcam repeatedly sold out when restocked. That dated notice cannot establish current inventory, regional availability or current pricing.

The 2.8K display was offered as a Marketplace upgrade for existing Laptop 13 systems, so owners should check the module’s stated compatibility before purchase. Framework’s modular architecture is the key distinction from conventional thin laptops, but not every component is interchangeable across every generation.

For a practical compatibility check:
- Identify the exact Laptop 13 generation and processor platform you own.
- Compare that model with the compatibility list for the display, webcam or other module you intend to buy.
- Confirm regional stock, firmware requirements and the current price at checkout.
- Do not assume that a module designed for the 2024 Intel system fits a later or earlier platform without Framework’s compatibility statement.
How this model differs from later Framework Laptop 13 generations
The 2024 Intel machine is easy to confuse with newer products because Framework kept the Laptop 13 name and similar chassis format.
| Model | Announcement date | Platform and notable details | How it relates to the 2024 Intel model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laptop 13 with Intel Core Ultra Series 1 | May 29, 2024 | Intel Core Ultra Series 1; optional 2880×1920 120 Hz display; 9.2MP-sensor webcam | Subject of this article |
| Laptop 13 with AMD Ryzen AI 300 | February 25, 2025 | Different AMD processor platform; retained the 13.5-inch format, optional 2.8K 120 Hz display and 61 Wh battery | Later generation, not the Intel Series 1 system |
| Laptop 13 Pro | April 2026 | Ground-up redesign using Intel Core Ultra Series 3, among other changes | Newer redesigned product, not a refresh of the 2024 configuration |
Framework said owners as far back as the original 2021 Laptop 13 could upgrade with new modules for the 2025 AMD generation. That statement does not make every 2025 or 2026 component compatible with the 2024 Intel configuration.
What is—and is not—established about performance
The published specifications establish the processor family, maximum stated core and memory configurations, display figures and webcam sensor resolution. They do not establish a tested frame rate, application benchmark, battery runtime, fan-noise level or webcam quality under controlled conditions. Treat Framework’s efficiency, battery, thermal and low-light descriptions as claims from the manufacturer until independent testing for the exact configuration is available.

Who should consider the 2024 Intel Laptop 13?
- Modularity-focused buyers: The replaceable and upgradeable design is the central reason to choose it over a sealed ultraportable.
- Users wanting a sharper, faster panel: The optional 2.8K 120 Hz screen is substantially more detailed than a conventional 1080p-class laptop panel, subject to its cost and availability.
- Organizations standardizing Windows devices: The announced business SKUs add Windows 11 Pro, Autopilot and a three-year extended limited warranty.
- Existing Laptop 13 owners: The display and other Marketplace modules may offer a targeted upgrade, but compatibility must be checked by generation.
Buyers primarily seeking the newest Intel architecture should look at the generation label carefully: the 2024 product uses Core Ultra Series 1, while the 2026 Laptop 13 Pro uses Core Ultra Series 3 and a ground-up redesign.
