Frame-rate matching switches a video player’s output mode to suit a film or program’s frame rate. Variable refresh rate (VRR) dynamically adjusts a compatible display’s refresh timing to follow changing frame delivery from a game. Matching mainly addresses video cadence; VRR mainly addresses fluctuating game performance.
What frame-rate matching does
Video is encoded at a particular frame rate. If a player sends it through an output refresh rate that does not align well with that cadence, some frames may be shown for uneven durations. Frame-rate matching lets the player switch its output mode to one that better suits the content, reducing the need for uneven cadence conversion.
For example, Apple documents Apple TV matching content encoded at 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60 frames per second to an appropriate refresh rate for the region. Where available, 25 fps content can be doubled to 50 Hz and 30 fps content to 60 Hz. These are Apple TV examples, not a guarantee that every player supports the same rates. See Apple’s Match Frame Rate instructions.
This is a mode change for the content’s cadence, not continuous adaptation to every frame as it arrives. Apple notes that a format switch can briefly produce a blank screen or flicker. Its documented Apple TV settings also attempt to identify supported TV formats and let users test an unverified format.

What variable refresh rate does
Games may deliver frames at changing intervals because rendering time varies from frame to frame. With VRR, a compatible display adjusts its refresh timing to follow those frames, within the range supported by the source, display, and connection. HDMI describes VRR as letting a gaming source deliver frames at a variable rate; see its VRR overview.
Without synchronization, a frame that is not ready at the expected refresh time may lead the source to repeat a frame or show part of a newly rendered frame. Those behaviors can contribute to judder or tearing. VRR is intended to reduce such timing problems, but it is not a promise to eliminate every instance of stutter, input lag, flicker, or other visual artifact. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as matching a monitor’s refresh rate to GPU frame rate and says it is intended to eliminate tearing and minimize stutter and input lag on compatible systems. Its G-SYNC documentation specifies a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible display requirement.

How the two features differ
| Question | Frame-rate matching | Variable refresh rate |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | The playback device changes its output display mode to suit a known content frame rate. | The display changes refresh timing to follow variable frame delivery from a gaming source. |
| Typical use | Films and episodic video with a known cadence. | Games whose frame delivery changes during play. |
| How it behaves | A mode selection or switch for the content; it is not per-frame adaptation. | Dynamic adjustment while the source is delivering frames, within the supported operating range. |
| What to verify | Player support, the rates it can match, and which output formats the display accepts. | Source and display support, connection and VRR format, and the supported range. |
Both coordinate source and display timing, but they are not interchangeable modes. A TV or monitor may support both through different sources or settings; support for one does not establish support for the other.
Which one should you use?
For films and TV shows
Use frame-rate matching if your playback device offers it and you want its output mode to suit the video’s cadence. Check which rates the player can match and whether the display accepts the resulting formats. On Apple TV, the setting is called Match Frame Rate; Apple says it matches the refresh rate to the original frame rate of the content being watched.

For games with changing frame rates
Use VRR when both the game source and display support a compatible VRR mode. The practical benefit depends on the full setup and on whether the game’s frame delivery falls within the supported range.
For a fixed-frame desktop task
Neither feature is automatically necessary. A fixed refresh mode may already suit the task. Consider changing settings if the current mode produces a visible problem and the source supports a useful alternative.

Check compatibility before enabling VRR
VRR names do not guarantee that every combination of hardware will work. G-SYNC and FreeSync are vendor technologies or certifications associated with VRR; HDMI VRR and DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync are interface standards or mechanisms. AMD says FreeSync uses industry standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI VRR. Check the precise specifications for your equipment rather than relying on a logo or HDMI version label alone. See AMD’s FreeSync information.
- Confirm that the GPU or console supports the VRR mode you intend to use.
- Confirm that the TV or monitor supports that mode, and check its stated operating range.
- Verify that the chosen input and connection support VRR for your source and display.
- Check whether the source and display require a particular setting to enable the feature.
For a specific setup, the source and display manufacturers’ current specifications are the authority. Support for a feature category alone does not establish compatibility for an individual model or connection.
