A 60 fps stream does not always need a fixed amount more bitrate than a 30 fps stream: YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 17 Mbps for 1080p60 versus 14 Mbps for 1080p30, while its recommendation is 8 Mbps for both 720p60 and 720p30. Keep your configured bitrate within measured upload capacity and leave headroom.
These are YouTube Live ingest recommendations, not universal settings or guarantees of picture quality. Other platforms may recommend different settings, and YouTube’s guidance can change.
Why frame rate affects bitrate
Frame rate is one factor in a live encoder’s bitrate recommendation, alongside resolution and codec. More frames can require more data, but the recommended increase varies by resolution and codec. You should compare settings while holding resolution and codec constant rather than assume 60 fps always doubles the bitrate.
Video content and network conditions also matter to the viewing experience. The platform’s recommended bitrate is a useful starting point, but it does not guarantee that every scene or connection will look the same.

YouTube Live bitrate recommendations for 30 fps and 60 fps
The following YouTube Help recommendations are for live ingest. Values are in Mbps. The figures were checked on 2026-10-04; YouTube’s consulted page did not show a publication date.

For example, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for either listed 720p frame rate, but the recommended bitrate is 8 Mbps for both. Minimums are not replacements for the recommended settings or a test of your connection. How much upload speed do you need?
Your available upload bandwidth must be sufficient for the stream’s total bitrate, with room for other network use and disruptions. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. Its streaming tips advise checking upload speed and note that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth.
- Choose the planned resolution, frame rate, and codec, then look up the matching YouTube Live recommendation.
- Measure outbound upload bandwidth rather than relying on a download-speed figure or an advertised plan speed.
- Leave the recommended 20% headroom and account for other traffic using the connection.
- Test the planned resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative motion before the event.
- Monitor stream health while live. A network disruption can affect or break a stream.
Live streaming settings versus finished-video uploads
Do not use YouTube’s recommendations for uploading a finished video as if they were live ingest settings. They cover a different workflow and have separate tables. For SDR prerecorded uploads, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). For 720p, the corresponding figures are 5 Mbps and 7.5 Mbps. These are file-encoding recommendations, not live-stream bitrates. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Other YouTube Live encoder settings
YouTube’s consulted live encoder guidance lists constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs. It recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds, and recommends RTMPS. Check the official guidance before streaming because supported settings can change.

Why does 60fps need more bitrate?
A higher frame rate can change the bitrate recommendation, but there is no dependable universal multiplier. YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 compared with 14 Mbps for 1080p30, while its recommendation is 8 Mbps for both 720p frame rates. Check the row for your resolution and codec.

What upload speed do I need to stream at 60fps?
It depends on the resolution and codec. Find the matching YouTube Live recommended bitrate, then make sure measured upload capacity can support it with headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; competing traffic and network disruptions can also affect a stream.
Is streaming bitrate the same as upload speed?
No. Bitrate is the rate configured for the stream; upload speed is the available outbound capacity of your internet connection. The configured stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth, with room for other traffic and disruptions.

Does 60fps always require more bitrate than 30fps?
No. In YouTube’s H.264 live recommendations, 1080p60 is higher than 1080p30, but the recommended bitrate is the same for 720p60 and 720p30. Compare the platform’s recommendations for the same resolution and codec.
Are YouTube upload-file bitrate recommendations valid for live streams?
No. Recommendations for encoding a finished video and live ingest settings describe different workflows. Use YouTube’s live encoder table when configuring a live stream.
