Foundation has three released seasons, and Apple renewed it for season four. Season three’s “The Darkness” is therefore a season finale, not the end of the series. Watch the show in its numbered season-and-episode order; you do not need to read Isaac Asimov’s books first.

How many seasons of Foundation are there?

Three seasons have aired, according to Apple’s series page. Apple renewed the show for a fourth season on September 11, 2025, and said production was set to begin in early 2026. The latest season documented by these sources is season three, which Apple dates to a July 11, 2025 release.

Season three’s finale, “The Darkness,” debuted globally on September 12, 2025. Apple’s spoiler-light description says Gaal and the Second Foundation head toward the Mule as the Emperor’s legacy suffers a catastrophic blow. That episode closes season three, not the entire series.

What order should you watch Foundation in?

Follow the season and episode numbers in Apple’s episode listing: start with season one, episode one, then watch each season’s episodes in order before moving to the next. The first episode is titled “The Emperor’s Peace,” followed by “Preparing to Live” and “The Mathematician’s Ghost.” The listing groups episodes by season, so there is no need to rearrange them into a flashback or timeline order.

Do you need to read the books before watching?

No. Apple describes the series as based on Isaac Asimov’s novels, but the show changes and rearranges material rather than adapting one novel per season. A 2025 What to Watch guide characterizes the first three seasons as drawing on the first three main novels while noting that there is no one-book-to-one-season mapping. The books can add context, but they present the story substantially differently; you can start with either the show or the novels.

What order should you read the Foundation books?

For a first read that preserves the order in which Asimov published the seven central Foundation novels, use this sequence:

  1. Foundation
  2. Foundation and Empire
  3. Second Foundation
  4. Foundation’s Edge
  5. Foundation and Earth
  6. Prelude to Foundation
  7. Forward the Foundation

The first three books form the original trilogy; the next two are sequels, and the final two are prequels. This publication order lets you encounter the story’s reveals as readers originally did.

Publication order or chronological order?

Publication order is the straightforward choice for a first read. Chronological order is also a valid preference if you want to follow the fictional history, beginning with the prequels, but it changes what you learn and when. The Penguin Random House Foundation catalog lists the series titles, and this Asimov reading-order guide discusses the publication-versus-chronological choice. The wider Robot and Galactic Empire novels connect to Asimov’s future history, but you do not need them to begin the central Foundation sequence.

Is Foundation over?

No. Apple announced a season-four renewal on September 11, 2025, and said production was set to begin in early 2026. As of October 4, 2026, the cited Apple sources document three released seasons and a fourth-season renewal, not a series finale. Apple’s renewal announcement quotes head of programming Matt Cherniss: “We’re excited to keep exploring this universe together in season four.” That confirms the renewal, not how or when the series will ultimately end.
