Start with Isaac Asimov’s original trilogy: Foundation, Foundation and Empire, then Second Foundation. It is the shortest useful route from Apple TV+’s adaptation into the books, without requiring prequel or connected-universe reading first.

Read the original Foundation trilogy first

  1. Foundation
  2. Foundation and Empire
  3. Second Foundation

This is the recommended starting sequence for viewers who want to read the novels behind the show. The television series is based on Asimov’s novels, but it is not a one-book-per-season retelling: a 2025 adaptation guide describes the seasons as drawing from the first three books in different ways. Read the trilogy as the core story, rather than expecting each novel to match a particular season.

What to read after the original trilogy

Optional prequels

Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation add background about Hari Seldon and the Empire. They are not required before the original trilogy; read them afterward if you want more context about Seldon’s life and the setting.

Sequels

Foundation’s Edge and Foundation and Earth continue beyond the original trilogy. A 2025 guide reported that the show then drew little from these books, but that describes the adaptation at that time, not a guarantee about later episodes.

Connected Robot and Empire novels

For optional wider-universe context, the guide also names these books:

  • The Caves of Steel
  • The Naked Sun
  • The Robots of Dawn
  • Robots and Empire
  • The Stars, Like Dust
  • The Currents of Space
  • Pebble in the Sky

These expand the connected setting; they are not prerequisites for starting Foundation.

Publication order or story chronology?

The books were not written in their internal chronological order, so publication order and in-universe chronology are different ways of arranging the series. For a viewer starting with the show, the original trilogy listed above provides a clear reading experience without needing to reorganize the books around the timeline. No detailed author-endorsed chronological sequence is established here.

What to expect from Apple TV+’s adaptation

Apple describes the series as based on Asimov’s novels. Its third season premiered July 11, 2025, according to Apple’s listing. The novels remain the source material, but the adaptation guide’s description of the first three books being used in different ways is a reason not to treat the screen version as a chapter-by-chapter substitute.
