InterMapper is a network and server monitoring product family marketed by Fortra. It is most relevant to IT teams that want live infrastructure maps, alerts, and tools for investigating service health or traffic patterns. Its fit depends on the devices and protocols you need to monitor, how you want discovery to work, and whether its availability model meets your operational requirements. Product capabilities below reflect Fortra’s documentation; this review is not based on hands-on testing.
What is InterMapper?
Fortra presents InterMapper as a set of related capabilities rather than a single undifferentiated feature list. The core monitoring product covers networks, servers, devices, applications, and other IP-enabled infrastructure, using live maps and alerts. Fortra’s catalog also identifies separate capabilities for reporting, traffic-flow analysis, server insight, and capacity planning. Availability of particular capabilities should be confirmed for the package and release being quoted.
| Capability | Fortra’s stated focus |
|---|---|
| InterMapper monitoring | Monitoring infrastructure with live maps and proactive alerts. |
| Advanced Reporting | Uptime, service health, SLA performance, and infrastructure trends. |
| Flows Insight | Traffic flows, bandwidth use, and congestion. |
| Server Insight | Deeper analysis of servers and workloads. |
| Foresight | Forecasting and capacity planning. |
These are vendor descriptions, not independent findings about monitoring accuracy or performance. Fortra’s product catalog is at Fortra’s network monitoring product page.
Protocols, platforms, and monitoring fit
Fortra’s comparison checklist lists Windows, macOS, and Linux distributions including Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian, and SuSE. It also lists SNMP, TCP, ICMP, WMI, and PowerShell support, along with historical strip charts, configurable polling intervals, alerts, and NetFlow, jFlow, sFlow, and cFlow support. These are vendor-stated capabilities; confirm operating-system support and protocol or probe availability for the exact current release and configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before requesting a quote, inventory the devices, interfaces, applications, and metrics you need to monitor. Check whether your network equipment exposes the required SNMP data, whether you rely on Windows-specific probes such as WMI or PowerShell, and whether your traffic exporters use one of the listed flow formats. A protocol appearing on a checklist does not by itself establish that every desired metric or use case is covered.
How discovery and maps work
Fortra’s FAQ says autodiscovery queries devices and assigns probes based on their response: a device that responds to SNMP is assigned SNMP; otherwise, it gets Ping Echo. Scheduled discovery can identify new devices and place them in a DetectionMap. Discovery does not necessarily mean active monitoring: according to the FAQ, a detected device must be moved to an active map and assigned a probe before it is monitored.

The FAQ also says CDP and LLDP do not drive map autodiscovery, though they may be used for layer-2 discovery in the stated contexts. Teams expecting a fully populated, actively monitored map without review or probe assignment should verify the workflow against their network and operating procedures. See Fortra’s InterMapper FAQ.
Scale and sizing considerations
Fortra’s FAQ provides approximate device figures, but describes capacity as dependent on probe type, the number of SNMP objects polled, polling frequency, executable architecture, network activity, database work, and flow activity. The figures are undated vendor estimates, not guarantees or independent benchmarks.

| Configuration in Fortra’s FAQ | Approximate stated capacity |
|---|---|
| 32-bit; SNMP or custom-probe devices | About 2,250 devices. |
| 32-bit; ping/ICMP-only devices | About 5,000 devices. |
| 64-bit; SNMP or custom-probe devices | About 3,000 devices. |
| 64-bit system running flows | Up to three exporters in the stated configuration. |
These numbers do not establish capacity for a specific deployment, particularly when polling many objects frequently or combining flows, reporting, and database workloads. Ask Fortra to size the proposed system using your expected device mix, polling intervals, exporters, retention, and reporting load, then validate the plan against your own environment.
Availability and recovery
Fortra’s FAQ says InterMapper does not support a clustered environment and has no high-availability function in the literal sense. It describes a separate licensed secondary system subject to identity conditions, but that is not the same as a conventional clustered HA deployment. If monitoring continuity is a strict requirement, get the secondary-system rules, failover or recovery procedure, and operational limitations in writing before choosing an architecture.

Pricing, licensing, trial, and support
Fortra advertises a free 30-day trial. Its upgrade page says licensing starts at 10 devices and extends to unlimited, with subscription and perpetual options; it directs buyers to request a custom quote rather than publishing a list price. The vendor says paid versions include 24/7 technical support, map export to Microsoft Visio and SVG, and access to the Fortra Community Portal. Confirm the current quote, device-count definition, included modules, and support terms directly with Fortra.
Fortra says a device is generally a physical or virtual instance identified by a MAC address, subject to probe and map rules. That qualification matters when estimating license count: do not assume that a device means a particular interface, host, or monitored metric without confirming how the vendor counts your environment. The vendor’s upgrade information is at Fortra’s InterMapper upgrade page, and trial and documentation links are available from Fortra Support.

How to evaluate InterMapper for your network
- Map your monitoring requirements. List the infrastructure, applications, interfaces, protocols, and probes you need, then confirm support for the exact release and package.
- Test the discovery workflow. Establish whether SNMP discovery, DetectionMap review, moving devices to active maps, and assigning probes fit your team’s process.
- Check alert and response needs. Compare required notification methods, escalation, schedules, and scripted responses with the configuration Fortra is offering.
- Validate reporting and flows. Confirm which reporting and flow-analysis capabilities are included, whether your exporters are supported, and what historical information you need.
- Size for the real workload. Include polling cadence, SNMP objects, probe types, flow activity, reporting, retention, and database load; treat the FAQ’s figures as starting estimates only.
- Agree on availability expectations. Verify secondary-system licensing, recovery steps, and the consequences of having no literal cluster or HA feature.
- Compare total cost and terms. Confirm the device count, subscription or perpetual terms, operating-system requirements, quote, and support coverage for the exact proposed configuration.
Fortra’s comparison checklist can help identify the capabilities it emphasizes, but it is vendor-authored and should not be read as an independent product ranking. Request a current quote and validate feature availability for the specific version and package under consideration.
Verdict: who should consider InterMapper?
InterMapper is worth evaluating if your team values live network maps and wants monitoring, alerts, reporting, or flow analysis within a Fortra product family. The decision hinges less on the feature labels than on fit: the discovery-to-monitoring workflow, supported probes and protocols, realistic scale, licensing count, and recovery expectations. The published documentation does not establish a current release number or a complete release-specific system-requirements list, so confirm those details with Fortra before deployment.
