In August 2024, Epic brought Fortnite to iPhones in the European Union through the Epic Games Store and other independent stores, following changes to iOS distribution under the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA). That was not a worldwide return to Apple’s App Store, and availability changed again: Reuters reported in May 2025 that Fortnite was unavailable on iPhones in both the EU and the United States. The available sources do not establish its live availability in October 2026.
What “Fortnite is back on iPhone” meant
In August 2024, Fortnite returned to iPhones in the EU through alternative app distribution, including the Epic Games Store and other independent stores. It did not return worldwide to Apple’s App Store. Reuters reported that Fortnite was available worldwide on Android at the time, a separate platform and distribution story. Reuters, August 2024

Availability depends on both location and route: a game offered through an independent iOS store in the EU is not the same as a listing in Apple’s App Store, nor does it establish availability in the US or elsewhere. A May 2025 Reuters report described a later interruption on iPhones in the EU and US. The cited reporting does not confirm where Fortnite can be downloaded today.
Why the dispute began
Apple and Google removed Fortnite from their app stores in August 2020 after Epic introduced an alternative payment feature, according to Reuters’ 2024 account. Epic said it had 116 million users on Apple’s platform at the time; that is a historical figure attributed to Epic, not a current audience count. Reuters, August 2024

The later EU route followed the Digital Markets Act, which required changes to how Apple handles app distribution on iOS. Apple’s page says the European Commission designated Apple a gatekeeper for iOS, the App Store and Safari on September 5, 2023, and for iPadOS on April 29, 2024. Apple’s DMA information page
How the account reinstatement and launch unfolded
| Date | Event | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| August 2020 | Apple and Google removed Fortnite from their app stores after Epic introduced an alternative payment feature, according to Reuters. | The original store dispute; not a later EU distribution decision. |
| March 2024 | Epic said Apple terminated Epic Games Sweden AB’s developer account. Epic said it planned to use the account to bring its store and Fortnite to iOS in Europe under the DMA. On March 8, Epic said Apple had told it, and committed to the European Commission, that it would reinstate the account. | Epic’s account of the termination and reinstatement commitment; this was distinct from Fortnite’s eventual launch. |
| July 25, 2024 | Epic announced mobile-store plans, including a 12% fee for payments processed by its store and 0% for third-party payments. | Terms Epic announced on that date, not independently verified current fees. |
| August 2024 | Fortnite launched on iPhones in the EU through the Epic Games Store and other independent stores. | A regional return through alternative distribution, not a worldwide App Store listing. |
| May 2025 | Reuters reported Fortnite was unavailable on iPhones in the EU and US after Apple asked Epic Sweden to resubmit an update without its US storefront. | A later, dated availability dispute; not proof of current availability. |
| 2026 | A European Commission staff working document said third-party stores, including Epic Games Store, had begun distributing apps on iOS and iPadOS; it also said proceedings concerning Apple’s compliance solution and terms remained ongoing. | Alternative stores were operating, while regulatory scrutiny continued. |
Epic’s March account is a company statement, not an independent ruling on whether Apple’s conduct violated the DMA. Epic said Apple had committed to the Commission to reinstate the developer account; the account action and the eventual game release should not be conflated. Epic’s March 2024 account update

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney told reporters, as quoted by Reuters in 2024, “We probably lost over a billion dollars of revenue by losing access to the iOS customer base worldwide for four years, but what’s the cost of freedom?” This is Sweeney’s estimate and rhetorical framing, not an audited financial result. Reuters, August 2024
Why availability changed again in 2025
In May 2025, Reuters reported that Fortnite was unavailable on iPhones in the EU and US after Apple asked Epic Sweden to resubmit an update without its US storefront. Apple said it had not removed the live version from alternative distribution marketplaces. Epic alleged retaliation in a court filing; that allegation is not a judicial finding. Reuters, May 2025

This episode is separate from the 2024 reinstatement of Epic’s developer account and the initial EU launch. The competing descriptions also matter: Reuters reported Apple’s request and explanation alongside Epic’s allegation, rather than establishing that a court had resolved the dispute.
What the EU’s 2026 update says—and does not say
The European Commission staff working document says third-party app stores, including Epic Games Store, began distributing apps on iOS and iPadOS. It also says the Commission’s proceedings examining Apple’s alternative-distribution compliance solution—including business terms, fees, the installation journey and eligibility rules—were ongoing. That records both the operation of alternative stores and unresolved regulatory scrutiny; it does not, by itself, establish a final finding that Apple breached the law or settle Fortnite’s current listing status. How to check where Fortnite is available
Because the cited reports describe changing availability rather than a live October 2026 listing, confirm the current offer for your country before following an installation guide. Check the Epic Games Store and the relevant official store listing for your region; do not assume an old EU installation walkthrough applies in another country or remains current. At launch, Sweeney characterized the iOS installation path as involving 15 steps. That was Epic’s description of the process in August 2024, not a verified current step count. Reuters, August 2024
Epic announced in July 2024 that its store would charge 12% on payments it processed and 0% on third-party payments. Those were Epic’s announced terms at that time; the announcement does not establish the store’s current fees. Epic Games Store mobile-launch announcement, July 2024
