Check Epic’s live status page first. If it reports an incident affecting Fortnite or a related service, wait for Epic’s update before changing your home network settings. If no matching incident appears, use Fortnite’s network stats and compare the same device on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or another connection where possible. These checks help narrow down the cause, but no single status page, error message, or test proves where every connection fault lies.
Start by checking whether Epic reports an outage
Open the Epic Games Public Status page and inspect Fortnite and related game services. If it shows an incident that matches your problem, wait for Epic to resolve it or post an update, then try again. Repeatedly changing router settings is unlikely to help while the service is unavailable.
Status is a live snapshot, not a guarantee that every regional, platform-specific, or unreported issue has been ruled out. If the page says services are operational but Fortnite still fails, continue with the connection checks below.
Check Fortnite’s network stats during a match
- In the lobby, open Settings → Game UI.
- Enable Net Debug Stats and apply the setting.
- Join a match and watch the network display while the problem occurs.
Epic says red bars under the network stats indicate packet loss; a solid white line indicates no packet loss. Packet loss means data is being lost between your connection and the server. It signals a problem along the network path, but does not identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, your router, your ISP, or another part of the route. Compare latency, packet loss, and jitter—not just ping
A low average ping does not rule out a connection problem. Epic’s latency guidance recommends considering average latency, packet loss, and jitter (variation in latency). It says consistently more than about 1% packet loss can cause in-game problems; treat that as Epic’s troubleshooting guidance, not a universal threshold for every game, device, or network route.
Repeat a ping or connection test during the time and conditions when Fortnite usually fails. An idle test may look fine while the connection struggles under load. Compare minimum and maximum latency as a rough indication of variation, and note any packet loss. Epic provides platform-specific ping-test examples in its latency and ping troubleshooting guide.

Use connection changes to isolate the home network
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If your device and router have Ethernet ports, connect them with a cable and repeat the same test. Better results over Ethernet point toward a Wi-Fi or local-network issue, though one comparison alone is not conclusive. Choose a cable long enough to reach safely; a wired connection cannot fix an Epic service outage.
Reduce competing traffic
Pause large downloads, uploads, and video streams while testing. Upload activity can be especially disruptive because home connections often have less upload capacity. Compare performance with and without that traffic under otherwise similar conditions.

Try another connection if available
Testing the same device on a mobile hotspot or another network can help separate a home-connection problem from a wider Fortnite issue. Epic’s guidance for some connection errors uses this kind of comparison: if the error stops on another connection, the player’s network is implicated. That does not prove the router needs replacing; the issue could be Wi-Fi, local configuration, or the ISP.
Epic’s troubleshooting sequence also includes restarting the modem or router. Its connection-issues guide covers additional topics such as devices, proxies, DNS, and firewalls. Avoid advanced changes such as port forwarding as a first step unless there is a platform-specific reason.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

When to contact your ISP or Epic Support
- Contact your ISP if packet loss persists, performance changes substantially with home network conditions, or Fortnite works over another connection but not your usual one. Share the times you tested and the observed packet loss or latency.
- Contact Epic Support if the status page shows no matching incident and your connection comparisons do not isolate the issue. Include your platform, region, exact error text, time of occurrence, and network stats.
Error codes can overlap in cause. Epic’s guidance for matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3 lists maintenance or a network connection issue as possible explanations; the code alone is not a definitive server-versus-home-network diagnosis. See Epic’s matchmaking error guidance.
