Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Fortnite won’t connect, first check Epic Games Status and your internet provider’s outage notices. If either reports a problem, wait for service to recover before changing network settings. If both are healthy, use the error message and the steps below to narrow down whether the issue is with matchmaking, your connection, or your device.
Epic’s support instructions below were checked on October 3, 2026. The help pages do not display publication dates, and status, menu labels, endpoint names, and platform directions can change.
Check for an outage before troubleshooting your setup
Fortnite connection symptoms can originate at several layers: Epic’s services, your ISP’s network or routing, your home Wi-Fi or router, security software or a proxy, or your platform and device. Start with Epic’s status page and your ISP’s outage or service-degradation notices. Epic identifies maintenance and service problems as possible causes of matchmaking and ESP errors; console players should check their ISP as well.
- If Fortnite matchmaking or another required Epic service is down, wait and try again after it recovers. Repeated router changes cannot resolve an Epic-side outage.
- If Epic reports normal service but your ISP reports an outage or degradation, follow the ISP’s guidance and retry when service is restored.
- If both appear healthy, continue with the error-specific checks below.
For trouble entering a Fortnite Live Event, Epic directs players to its separate Live Event troubleshooting guidance.

What Fortnite matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3 mean
Epic says matchmaking errors #1–#3 are mainly associated with server maintenance or a network connection issue. Check service status first. If services are up, try the general connection checks in this guide; if the error keeps returning, report it through Epic’s Fortnite bug-report instructions.
| Error | Example message from Epic | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| #1 | “Weird. We couldn’t connect to the match. You can try again, but if the problem continues, check our status page.” | Check Epic service status, then your connection if services are available. |
| #2 | “We had trouble connecting to content beacon service. Give it another shot, if the problem continues, check our status page.” | Check status and connection. If the wording says you lack permission for content, check tournament requirements and eligibility: that variant may be a permission issue rather than a network fault. |
| #3 | “Looks like all the Battle Buses headed out are full. Give it another shot in a few minutes, if it keeps up, visit our status page.” | Check status and retry; if services are available and it persists, investigate your connection. |
These examples and causes are from Epic Games’ matchmaking errors #1–#3 support article.
Matchmaking Error #5 or #7
Epic says Matchmaking Error #5 appears when Fortnite cannot connect you to a match, usually because of a server issue or a network connection problem. Check Epic Games Status, restart Fortnite, and, if services are available, follow the general connection checks below.

Epic’s support page title mentions both #5 and #7, but its available explanation defines #5 and does not separately establish a cause or fix for #7. For #7, check service status and follow the general connection steps rather than assuming it has the same specific cause as #5. See Epic’s Matchmaking Error #5 or #7 support page.
ESP-DIST-001 and other ESP errors
Epic describes ESP errors as usually connection-related. After checking for an outage, try the low-risk steps first:
- Close Fortnite and restart your modem and router, then restart your computer or console.
- Turn off nearby Bluetooth devices temporarily and retry.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, disconnect it for a test. Avoid leaving privacy or security protections disabled as a general fix.
- Try a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot. If Fortnite works there but not on your usual network, contact your ISP because the difference points toward that network or its route.
For PC, Epic also suggests checking launcher cache, DNS, and firewall or security-software settings. Use Epic’s operating-system-specific directions rather than making broad firewall exceptions or disabling protection without understanding the effect. Its Bitdefender instructions apply only to users of that product; its Nintendo Switch MTU procedure is specific to that console. Find the applicable steps in Epic’s ESP-DIST and ESP-error article.

“Connection to the Content Distribution Network failed! Curl Code: 7!” and “Network Connection Lost”
These messages indicate that Fortnite has lost or failed to establish a required connection, but they do not by themselves identify whether the cause is Epic, your ISP, your home network, or device configuration. For “Connection to the Content Distribution Network failed! Curl Code: 7!”, Epic points players to its general connection troubleshooting instructions. First check service status, then work through the restart, platform, and PC checks in this article.
Run a connection test on your console
After checking Epic and ISP outages, use the console’s own network test. Epic provides platform-specific directions for Xbox, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Follow the current instructions for your console and check whether its test reports a network problem.
If Xbox displays “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue,” Epic directs players to Microsoft Support. That message has a platform-specific support path; do not treat it as proof that your home router is at fault.

Check high ping, packet loss, and jitter
Show Fortnite’s network details
- In the Fortnite lobby, open Settings.
- Go to Game UI and turn Net Debug Stats on.
- Select Apply. Network details appear in the upper-left corner.
A repeated “Disabled” message by itself does not affect play. See Epic’s Net Debug Stats instructions.
Read the measurements together
- Ping is the time for data to travel from your device to the game server and back, measured in milliseconds. Congestion, routing, and the particular match server can change it.
- Packet loss means some data does not reach its destination. Epic’s support guidance says loss should be 0%; it says consistently more than about 1% can cause in-game problems even when average ping is only varying by a few milliseconds.
- Jitter is variation in latency. Look at the minimum and maximum together: a wide gap indicates less consistent timing than a narrow one.
Compare the readings while the problem is happening, not only when the connection feels normal. A good average ping does not rule out trouble if packet loss or jitter is elevated.
Compare with Epic’s endpoint test
Epic’s support guidance gives these sample commands for testing its endpoint from a Windows 11 or macOS computer. Each sends 50 packets; the command is a test procedure, not a guarantee of how Fortnite will perform in a match.
Best Value
- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Windows 11:
ping ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com -n 50 - macOS:
ping -c 50 ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com
Use an endpoint relevant to your matchmaking subregion when available. The test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP, so a normal endpoint ping test cannot rule out every issue on the gameplay network path. Epic’s broader ping and connection guidance explains its endpoint testing and latency checks.

| Option | When it is worth testing | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi | Test a cable if wireless signal loss or interference may be involved and both your device and router have Ethernet ports. | Ethernet can avoid problems on the local wireless link, but will not fix an Epic outage, poor ISP routing, or every cause of packet loss. Wi-Fi is more convenient. |
| 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz Wi-Fi | Test both bands from the place where you actually play. | Epic says 2.4 GHz reaches farther but can be crowded; 5 GHz is faster but has shorter range. Keep whichever gives better results at your location. |
| Automatic matchmaking region versus a subregion preference | Consider a preference if you want to land in a particular subregion more often. | Epic warns that a subregion preference can increase queue time and reduce match quality. |
| Current router settings or another router | Investigate only after the basic service, ISP, and connection checks. | Epic says QoS or gaming mode may help prioritize Fortnite over large transfers, and a faulty router can impair performance. A new router is not a routine first fix. |
These trade-offs follow Epic’s guidance on improving ping.
Use a low-risk troubleshooting order
- Check Epic and ISP status. If either reports an outage or degradation, wait for service recovery rather than changing router settings.
- Restart the game, then your network equipment. Close and reopen Fortnite. If services are healthy and the problem continues, restart the modem and router.
- On console, run its network test. Follow the current Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch support directions linked above.
- On PC, check local software and configuration. Test without an active VPN or proxy; review firewall/security software, launcher cache, DNS, background apps, device clock, and whether required network domains are reachable. Follow Epic’s steps for your exact operating system and avoid broadly disabling security tools.
- For lag or loss, reduce competing traffic. Pause large downloads and uploads or streams, test Ethernet if practical, enable Net Debug Stats, and compare ping, packet loss, and jitter while playing.
- Escalate with evidence. If an alternate connection works or latency remains high on your usual ISP, contact the ISP with the tested endpoint, test results, and Fortnite’s in-game readings. If the ISP connection appears healthy but the Fortnite error persists, contact Epic Support; for a console-specific issue, use the platform support path as applicable.
Epic’s general connection troubleshooting article also recommends contacting the hardware manufacturer after its listed steps when the issue remains unresolved.
