After an iPhone restarts, it requires the device passcode before Face ID or Touch ID can unlock it. If you forgot the code, first try the previous passcode if you changed it within the past 72 hours and your iPhone runs iOS 17 or later. Otherwise, Apple’s supported recovery options erase the iPhone: reset it from the locked screen if eligible, or use recovery mode with a computer. You can restore erased data from a backup if you have one.

Why is my iPhone asking for a passcode after a reboot?

A restart requires you to enter your device passcode before Face ID or Touch ID can be used again. Biometrics do not replace that first passcode unlock after reboot. This is expected iPhone behavior, not a sign that Face ID or Touch ID has stopped working. Apple explains when a passcode is required.

I forgot my iPhone passcode—what do I do?

Use the least destructive available option, in this order:

  1. If you changed the passcode in the last 72 hours, try Apple’s previous-passcode reset option on iOS 17 or later.
  2. If that option is unavailable, erase the iPhone from its locked screen if it meets Apple’s requirements.
  3. If you cannot reset it on the iPhone, erase it using recovery mode and a Mac or Windows PC.

Apple’s computer-reset guidance puts it plainly: “To access your iPhone after you’ve forgotten your passcode, you must reset your device.” Apple Support: Use a computer to reset your iPhone and your passcode.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Can I use my old passcode?

Yes, in a limited case: Apple’s Passcode Reset feature is available on iOS 17 or later when you changed your passcode within the previous 72 hours and still remember the old one. It is a one-time opportunity, not a way to bypass a forgotten passcode indefinitely. Apple’s previous-passcode instructions describe the supported flow.

  1. On the Device Unavailable screen, tap Forgot Passcode? after five incorrect attempts.
  2. Tap Enter Previous Passcode.
  3. Enter the previous passcode, then follow the prompts to set a new one.

If you do not see the option, the 72-hour window has passed, or you do not know the previous passcode, use one of the erase-and-reset methods below.

When can I erase the iPhone from its locked screen?

Apple supports on-device reset on iOS 15.2 or later. You need to have enabled Find My before being locked out, the iPhone must have an active Wi-Fi or mobile connection, and you must know the Apple Account password associated with the device. In the current iOS 17-or-later flow, the reset begins from Forgot Passcode? on the Security Lockout screen. Apple’s on-device reset steps provide the current screen-by-screen instructions.

Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the reset, sign out with your Apple Account password, and choose Erase [Device]. The reset permanently erases data and settings on the iPhone. During setup afterward, restore a backup if one is available.

How do I reset the iPhone with a computer?

If the locked-screen reset is not available, use recovery mode with a Mac or Windows PC, an internet connection, and a cable that can charge your iPhone. The process erases the iPhone’s current data. Before starting, check that the cable fits both your iPhone and the computer; the cable is for connecting the device, not unlocking it.

  1. Open Apple’s computer recovery instructions and identify the recovery-mode button sequence for your iPhone model.
  2. Connect the iPhone to the computer and put it in recovery mode using that model-specific sequence.
  3. On the computer, select the iPhone when it appears in Finder on a Mac or in the Apple Devices app or iTunes on Windows, then choose the restore option and follow the prompts.
  4. When the process finishes, set up the iPhone and restore from a backup if you have one.

If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPhone exits recovery mode, let the download finish. Then turn off the iPhone and enter recovery mode again, as Apple instructs.

Will I lose my photos if I reset it?

Resetting erases data and settings currently on the iPhone. If you have a backup, you can restore it during setup; without a backup, you must set up the phone as new. Do not assume that photos or other files stored only on the locked iPhone can be recovered through a passcode reset. Apple’s passcode guide explains erasure and restoring from a backup.

What happens to an eSIM?

With the on-device erase flow on iOS 17 or later, Apple says you may be offered the choice to keep or delete the eSIM. If you use an eSIM on iOS 16 or earlier, Apple advises contacting your carrier before erasing the device.
