Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Forgejo is a self-hosted software forge for hosting code and collaborating on it. You install and operate the service yourself, including its data storage, configuration, upgrades, and any CI runners you choose to attach. Official installation paths include a binary and a container image; the right choice depends on how you prefer to deploy and maintain server software.
What Forgejo does—and what self-hosting involves
Forgejo brings code collaboration services together on infrastructure you control. Its built-in Actions system can coordinate automated build, test, deployment, or publishing workflows, but the Forgejo server does not execute those jobs by itself. You remain responsible for the service’s underlying machine or container environment, persistent data, configuration, backups, updates, and any separately installed runners.
The project distributes binaries and container images and provides documentation for users and administrators. It does not specify a particular server provider or hardware requirement in the installation material, so deployment capacity should be selected for your own workload rather than inferred from a general recommendation.
Choose an installation method
| Method | Best fit | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Binary | Administrators who want to install and manage Forgejo directly on a host. | The official binary guide documents a Linux systemd pattern, a dedicated git user, and data and configuration directories. This is one documented approach, not a requirement for every deployment. |
| Container | Administrators who already manage services as containers. | Plan how the container’s configuration and persistent data are stored and preserved when updating or recreating it. |
Both are official installation approaches. The project notes that third-party packages exist, but are not tested as extensively across releases as the official methods. The download page says Forgejo binaries are GPG-signed; use the project’s download instructions for the release you select: Forgejo downloads and installation guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Select a database
The binary installation guide presents SQLite as an option that requires no separate database setup, alongside MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL. It describes SQLite as good enough for at least 10 users and possibly more. Treat that as the project’s practical guidance, not a capacity benchmark or guarantee for a particular workload.
- SQLite: simplest to set up because it does not require a separate database service. Consider the actual workload and your backup and maintenance needs.
- MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL: alternatives when you prefer or need a separate database service, with the corresponding additional administration.
Forgejo’s guide does not establish universal user-count thresholds for choosing among these options. Review its current binary installation instructions before deployment.

Choose a release: stable or LTS
Forgejo’s documentation says stable releases arrive every three months and LTS releases annually, with patch releases more frequently for bug and security fixes. The official release listing checked on 4 October 2026 showed the following; versions and support dates can change, so check the listing when you install:
| Track | Release listed | Release date | Support listed through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable | v16.0.5 | 17 September 2026 | 29 October 2026 |
| LTS | v15.0.9 | 17 September 2026 | 15 July 2027 |
Stable is the newer feature track in this snapshot; LTS has the later listed support end date. Choose based on whether you prioritize the newest feature line or its published support horizon, and verify the current status on the Forgejo releases page.

Forgejo v16.0 was announced on 16 July 2026. The announcement highlights security hardening around Git mirroring and Actions changes including manual workflow prioritization and authorized integrations; those are selected highlights, not a complete changelog. Before upgrading, make a working full backup and read the release’s breaking changes: Forgejo v16.0 announcement.
Install and operate the service
The official setup path is to install from a binary or container, complete the web configuration, and create the first user. For a binary on Linux, the project documents a systemd-based pattern using a dedicated git account and separate data and configuration directories. Adapt the layout to your environment while ensuring the service can access its required files.

- Choose the release and method. Check the current release listing, then use its official binary or container directions.
- Prepare persistent storage and configuration. For containers, make deliberate choices about persistent volumes; for the documented Linux binary pattern, follow the guide’s user and directory setup.
- Choose and configure a database. Use SQLite or configure MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL according to the official installation guide.
- Complete initial web setup. Start Forgejo using the chosen deployment method, open its web setup, enter the required configuration, and create the first user.
- Establish a backup and upgrade routine. Retain a working full backup and follow the project’s upgrade instructions before changing versions.
Exact commands and configuration steps depend on the release and whether you use a binary or container; follow the current administrator installation documentation rather than applying one filesystem layout to every deployment.

Forgejo Actions is its integrated continuous-integration system. Workflow files belong in .forgejo/workflows; if that directory is absent, Forgejo also looks in .github/workflows. Forgejo stores and dispatches workflow runs, while a separately installed and configured Forgejo Runner executes them. Runners can be attached at instance, organization or user, or repository scope. See the Actions documentation.

Workflows can run arbitrary repository code, potentially including code from pull requests and access to private repository contents. Runner placement is therefore a security decision, not just a configuration step.
- Host runners: Forgejo warns that they have no real isolation. A compromised job can affect the runner host and potentially later jobs. The project’s quick guidance is to host your own runner and use it only for trusted repositories.
- Container runners: generally safer than host runners, but still vulnerable if misconfigured; a container is not a reason to ignore isolation and permissions.
- Secrets: store tokens and passwords using secrets storage, configure access carefully, and do not print secrets in logs.
Before enabling workflows for repositories with contributors you do not fully trust, decide what code the runner may execute, what secrets it can access, and what systems the job can reach.
Upgrading from Gitea or an older Forgejo release
Forgejo and Gitea release cycles are no longer synchronized. Forgejo says its automatic testing covers upgrades from older Gitea instances to a recent Forgejo version, but it does not guarantee compatibility with a newer Gitea than the version it advertises as compatible. A migration is therefore version-sensitive: check Forgejo’s current compatibility and upgrade guidance, and keep a working full backup before changing software. The project’s download and upgrade information explains the compatibility qualification.
