- MySQL 5.x, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL.
- A web server; Apache is the officially supported, tested option.

- Unpack Flyspray into a directory accessible through the web server.
- Make the required attachments, avatars, and cache directories writable by the web server.
- Open the application’s
/setup/path in a browser and complete the setup process. - Remove the
/setup/directory when setup is complete.
Consult the project’s installation documentation for exact directory names and configuration details for your package and environment. If your team needs dependency graphs, install and configure Graphviz as an additional component.
Ongoing maintenance and upgrades
Self-hosting gives an organization control over the application and its data, but it also makes that organization responsible for the supporting stack. Plan for PHP and database administration, application permissions, backups, mail delivery, and upgrades. This is the main operational trade-off against a hosted tracker: Flyspray’s lighter focus does not eliminate the work of maintaining a web application.

For an upgrade, the official guidance calls for backing up the application files and database, preserving configuration and user data directories, copying in the new files, and running the setup upgrader. Remove /setup/ again after the upgrade. The download page also cautions that development releases can contain bugs or unintended side effects and are not recommended for production.
Is Flyspray still maintained?
The official download page lists Flyspray 1.0-rc11 — Flyspray, 2024, dated January 29, 2024. That is the latest release identified by the project page in the information available for this article; it is not a guarantee that no newer release has appeared since. Because it is labeled a release candidate, teams evaluating it for production should review the current project releases and documentation, and decide whether that maturity level fits their risk tolerance.

How to decide whether it fits
Flyspray is a plausible choice when you want a self-hosted tracker with multiple projects, task collaboration, notifications, dependencies, roadmaps, search, feeds, and export—and have the capacity to administer its PHP and database environment. It is a less compelling fit if your priority is avoiding server operations or if your organization requires a stable final release designation. Weigh the convenience of managing the infrastructure yourself against that work, and validate the required server and PHP versions against the exact release you intend to run.
