Flutter can drive camera-based hand controls with MediaPipe Gesture Recognizer, but sub-100 ms is a performance target—not a verified guarantee for Flutter and MediaPipe together. The reviewed Flutter package, mediapipeline_flutter 0.0.1, documents an Android native bridge; it does not establish a supported Flutter iOS implementation. To know whether an app meets the target, measure the full path from camera capture to the control response on the devices and conditions that matter.
What MediaPipe gesture control does in a Flutter app
MediaPipe Gesture Recognizer analyzes still images, decoded video frames, or live camera frames. It can return a gesture category, handedness, and hand landmarks in image and world coordinates. The task also handles input operations such as rotation, resizing, normalization, and color-space conversion. Developers can set score thresholds and category allowlists or denylists, and can use modified or custom models. Google’s Gesture Recognizer guide describes the task and its configuration.
Built-in labels include Unknown, Closed_Fist, Open_Palm, Pointing_Up, Thumb_Down, Thumb_Up, Victory, and ILoveYou. These are camera-recognized hand poses, not Flutter’s ordinary pointer gestures. Flutter’s gesture system handles touch, mouse, and stylus interactions; it does not itself identify a hand pose seen by a camera. Flutter’s gesture documentation covers that separate input system.

For video and live-stream recognition, MediaPipe reuses tracked hand regions rather than running palm detection on every frame. Google explains that palm detection is more time-consuming, so subsequent frames can use a bounding box derived from hand landmarks in the current frame to localize hands in the next one. This tracking behavior helps avoid repeating a costly detection step, but it does not promise a particular end-to-end latency.

Flutter platform support: what is documented
The pub.dev package mediapipeline_flutter version 0.0.1 describes an Android-native MediaPipe Tasks integration exposed to Flutter through a MethodChannel. Its listed features include real-time hand landmarks, CameraImage YUV420 support, basic gestures, and an ANR-safe processing pattern. The package publisher is marked unverified, so treat it as a documented implementation option rather than an endorsement or a mature cross-platform solution.
Although the package listing includes several platform tags, its description and integration documentation describe Android support. Those tags do not establish working Flutter iOS parity. Google separately documents native iOS integration through MediaPipeTasksVision, but a Flutter app would need a separately verified iOS bridge or implementation. See Google’s iOS Gesture Recognizer guide.

Validate camera-stream behavior on a physical Android device. The package documentation warns that some emulators may not support the camera stream; an emulator result should not be treated as proof that the same camera path works on a handset.

How live inference behaves—and what Flutter must handle
Google’s native Android guide documents Gesture Recognizer through com.google.mediapipe:tasks-vision. In live-stream mode, the recognizer reports results through a listener, and recognizeAsync returns immediately rather than waiting for inference to finish. Each video or live-stream frame needs a timestamp. The asynchronous callback pattern matters when a native recognizer is connected to Flutter through a platform channel. Google’s Android guide covers the native setup.

- Keep blocking work off the UI thread. Google advises moving blocking image and video recognition calls away from the UI thread. Live-stream calls are asynchronous, but camera conversion and channel handling still need to avoid blocking visible interaction.
- Attach frame timestamps. Video and live-stream inputs require timestamps; preserve the association between a frame and its eventual result.
- Expect frames to be skipped when busy. If the recognizer is still processing a frame, a new live-stream input may be ignored. A camera producing more frames than inference can accept therefore does not mean every frame will be analyzed.
- Handle results asynchronously. Update the Flutter-side control when the native result arrives, and ensure callbacks that arrive later do not trigger stale or repeated actions.
Does it actually stay below 100 ms?
No reviewed source establishes that a Flutter-plus-MediaPipe app consistently stays below 100 ms. The threshold is best treated as an app-specific engineering objective, since total response time includes more than model inference: camera capture, preprocessing, native recognition, the platform-channel callback, and the visible or physical action all contribute.
A 2024 Chalmers thesis, Hand gesture recognition in real time, reports total latency below 35 ms in its own demo application. It attributes 25.74 ms to gesture recognition, with most of that time attributed to MediaPipe hand-landmark feature extraction. That is a result from the thesis’s application and test setup, not a Flutter benchmark or a guarantee for a particular phone. Chalmers Open Digital Repository is the source for the thesis.

Measure the response the user experiences
For a meaningful sub-100 ms claim, measure from camera-frame capture through the moment the control becomes visible or physically responds. Record the conditions alongside the results:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Phone model and operating-system version.
- Camera resolution and frame rate.
- Recognizer model and number of hands being tracked.
- Lighting and thermal conditions, plus the warm-up procedure.
- Latency distribution, including the median and a high percentile, rather than only a best-case reading.
Measure on representative hardware and repeat under the app’s real lighting, users, and hand movements. A fast inference measurement alone cannot establish that the full control path stays below the target.

Choosing an implementation path
Compare options against the requirements that shape the actual experience, rather than platform tags or a single latency figure.

| What is documented | mediapipeline_flutter 0.0.1 describes an Android native MediaPipe Tasks bridge through a Flutter MethodChannel. Its publisher is marked unverified. |

| Camera and callbacks | Package features list CameraImage YUV420 support. Google’s live-stream model uses asynchronous results and timestamps; busy recognizers may ignore new input frames. | Google’s native iOS guide describes a live-stream delegate for asynchronous results. Flutter bridging and camera-frame handling need separate verification. |

| Latency evidence | No reviewed source publishes a Flutter benchmark under specified test conditions. | No reviewed source publishes a Flutter iOS benchmark under specified test conditions. |
In either case, validate recognition accuracy with the app’s intended users and gestures, and test on the actual range of lighting and movement conditions. Platform coverage, integration provenance, frame handling, callback behavior, and measured end-to-end performance are separate questions; success on one does not prove the others.
