Android uses App Links with a hosted assetlinks.json; iOS uses Universal Links with an Associated Domains entitlement and a hosted apple-app-site-association file. Then test both the operating-system handoff and the Flutter route.
How Flutter deep links work
Flutter documentation defines deep linking as launching an app with a URI. In a web-link setup, that URI is an HTTPS URL with a host and path. The operating system can open the associated app when the website and app are configured to trust one another; the Flutter app then interprets the URI and displays the intended content.
These are separate jobs. A route in Flutter does not establish that a domain belongs to the app, and a verified domain association does not decide which screen the app should show. Flutter’s [deep-linking overview](https://docs.flutter.dev/ui/navigation/deep-linking) explains the app-side behavior; the Android and iOS platform recipes cover domain association.
Choose a routing approach for the app
Use a router that can translate incoming paths into screens. Flutter’s navigation guidance distinguishes simple navigation from apps with specific deep-link or advanced routing needs: a simple app may use Navigator, while a Router-based approach is better suited to more involved URL routing. Flutter recommends a routing package such as go_router for advanced cases; its platform setup examples use go_router.

Define the paths the app supports and what each path should display, including a sensible result for an unknown or malformed path. A URI can reach the app successfully yet still fail to show the desired page if the route is missing or its parameters are not handled.
Set up Android App Links
1. Add an HTTP(S) intent filter
In the main activity’s AndroidManifest.xml, add a VIEW intent filter with DEFAULT and BROWSABLE categories. Add the host and HTTP/HTTPS scheme rules for URLs the app should handle, and set android:autoVerify="true". Follow Flutter’s [Android App Links recipe](https://docs.flutter.dev/cookbook/navigation/set-up-app-links) for the manifest structure and current configuration details.
2. Publish the website association file
Serve a valid JSON file at https://yourdomain/.well-known/assetlinks.json. It must identify the Android package name and the SHA-256 fingerprint of the signing certificate for the app. If you distribute builds signed with different keys, such as flavors or signing variants, include the fingerprints that should be trusted.

The fingerprint must match the certificate for the build users actually install. A mismatch can prevent the operating system from verifying the relationship even when the manifest appears correct. Keep the intent-filter hosts and schemes aligned with the URLs declared by your routing configuration and website association. If the app should handle only some URL paths, ensure the Android rules and app routing agree on that scope; do not rely on the app to handle URLs the operating system never delivers.
Set up iOS Universal Links
1. Enable Associated Domains
In the iOS app target, enable the Associated Domains capability and add an entry for each relevant domain in the form applinks:yourdomain. The entry is an entitlement: it declares the website association the app expects.

2. Host the AASA file
Publish an extensionless JSON file named apple-app-site-association at https://yourdomain/.well-known/apple-app-site-association. Its app identifier combines the Apple Team ID and bundle ID; its components specify which URL paths are eligible to open in the app. Use Flutter’s [Universal Links setup recipe](https://docs.flutter.dev/cookbook/navigation/set-up-universal-links) for the file format and configuration examples.
Apple’s [Associated Domains documentation](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/supporting-associated-domains) explains the entitlement and website association. Apple’s CDN may take up to 24 hours to request an updated AASA file, so a newly published or changed file may not be reflected immediately.

Test a real HTTPS URL on an iPhone or in the iOS Simulator. For example, open a URL in the booted Simulator with xcrun simctl openurl booted https://yourdomain/path. Check both that iOS opens the app and that Flutter displays the expected route.

Check Flutter version and link-handler setup
Flutter’s platform recipes mark Flutter 3.27 as a version boundary: projects using earlier versions require manually enabling deep linking in platform configuration. Follow the instructions for the Flutter release used by the project rather than assuming the latest defaults apply to an older app.
Third-party link handlers, including app_links, can conflict with Flutter’s default handler. If the project uses a plugin, follow that plugin’s current setup instructions, including whether Flutter’s built-in handler should be disabled. Compatibility can depend on the Flutter release, plugin release, and platform lifecycle; check the package documentation and changelog for the versions being shipped.
Validate the full link flow
Flutter DevTools includes a deep-link validator for Android and iOS as of Flutter 3.27. Use it to help find configuration problems across the website and app, then verify the experience by tapping actual links. A validator complements, rather than replaces, an end-to-end test.

Android: tap a real web link
Flutter’s Android recipe includes an adb command that launches an app with a URI. That proves the app can receive a launch URI, but it does not prove the website association file exists or is valid. To check the web association, tap the HTTPS link from a browser or another app and confirm Android opens the intended app and route.
iOS: allow for association propagation
After publishing or changing the AASA file, account for Apple’s CDN delay of up to 24 hours. Then tap the HTTPS link on a device or Simulator and confirm the app opens the intended route. If it does not, inspect the domain entitlement, app identifier and permitted path components as well as the Flutter route.

Separate handoff failures from routing failures
- The link stays in the browser: check the domain file, app identity, signing fingerprint or Team ID, and platform configuration.
- The app opens the wrong screen or an error screen: check that Flutter receives the URI and that the route recognizes its path and parameters.
- A direct launch works but a tapped link does not: verify the website association; a direct platform launch can bypass that check.
