To optimize Flutter performance for Android XR smart glasses, first establish where the Flutter app actually runs. If it runs on a host Android phone and sends an experience to display glasses, profile that phone-side app in profile mode on the phone itself. If the app is expected to render immersive spatial content directly on XR hardware, use the profiling and optimization tools for the XR runtime and engine in that architecture: Android’s documented XR paths include Jetpack XR, Unity, OpenXR and WebXR, but do not establish Flutter as a native XR rendering engine. For Flutter UI, use DevTools traces to find whether the UI or raster thread is responsible for slow frames before changing code.
First identify where the app runs
“Android XR smart glasses” can describe different device and execution setups. Android XR includes wired XR glasses and audio/display glasses; some audio/display glasses experiences are projected from a host phone. The device category and runtime determine what you can profile and which frame budget applies. See Android’s overview of Android XR device types.

Jetpack XR documentation describes its libraries as Developer Preview, with APIs under development. Treat that as the status stated by the Android documentation accessed on October 4, 2026, rather than a permanent availability guarantee.
Use the frame budget for the right target
Flutter’s general performance guidance uses approximately 16 ms per frame as a 60 FPS reference. That is useful for ordinary Flutter diagnostics, but it is not a universal Android XR target. Android XR’s app quality guidance specifies tighter rendering goals for its applicable XR targets.

Refresh rate and frame time are related: at a higher refresh rate, the app has less time to produce each frame. Do not apply the XR thresholds to a phone-projected Flutter UI unless the actual experience and target device call for them.
How to profile Flutter performance on Android
Use a profile-mode build on physical target hardware. Flutter notes that debug-mode frame times are not representative of release performance; profile mode retains profiling support while behaving much more like release mode. Emulator results can differ from real-device performance. See Flutter’s performance profiling guidance.

- Reproduce the real use case. Run the representative interaction on the target phone or device: include startup, screen transitions, repeated updates, external input and the projection path where applicable.
- Open Flutter DevTools’ Performance view. Record the frame chart and timeline during that interaction. The view exposes Flutter frame timing and work on the UI and raster threads. See Use the Performance view.
- Inspect slow frames before editing. Use timeline activity and thread work to identify whether the UI thread, raster thread or both are taking too long. A red or janky frame is evidence to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself.
- Repeat the same scenario after a change. Compare traces from the same interaction and device so you can tell whether the change improved the expensive work rather than merely shifting it.
For a Flutter web build, Flutter directs developers to use Chrome DevTools rather than its native-app profiling workflow.
Fix the bottleneck the trace reveals
If the UI thread is busy
Check whether the app rebuilds more widgets than necessary or constructs a large list directly. Flutter identifies unnecessary rebuilding and large lists as common performance pitfalls. Narrow rebuild work and use a list approach suited to the amount of content, then profile the same interaction again. See Improving rendering performance.

If raster work is expensive
Investigate rendering effects such as opacity, clipping and shadows only when the trace points to rendering cost. These effects are not automatically problems in every app; their impact depends on the scene and device. Make one material change at a time and measure its result in DevTools rather than removing visual effects indiscriminately.
If frames hitch during first use
Check the timeline for shader compilation or other first-use rendering work. Confirm that the hitch occurs in the scenario you care about, then evaluate a targeted change with another profile trace. Flutter’s rendering performance guidance discusses shader compilation and other causes of jank; it does not imply that shader work is the cause of every slow frame.

For direct spatial rendering, use engine-specific guidance
Android XR’s documented rendering features are scoped to their runtime or engine path. Android’s OpenXR materials list eye-tracked foveation, space warp, frame synthesis and runtime performance metrics. Android’s Unity guidance covers controls such as application spacewarp, Vulkan subsampling and late latching. These are not generic Flutter switches: use them only when the application is built for the corresponding XR pathway, and follow the relevant runtime or engine documentation.
For a spatial environment that contains 3D assets, Android’s environment guide recommends reducing mesh complexity and draw calls, compressing textures and baking lighting where appropriate. That guide gives approximate recommendations of 80 MB for a 3D wallpaper/GLB and 15 MB for audio; these are guide-specific recommendations, not universal device limits. Include startup and stability in the performance check
Frame pacing is only one part of an XR quality check. Android’s XR app quality guidelines also address startup expectations and app stability. Check those criteria for the relevant device and runtime alongside frame timing; do not substitute a smooth animation trace for evidence that launch and stability requirements are met.
