Use CSS clamp() to let a font size grow with the viewport while keeping it within readable minimum and maximum bounds. For example, font-size: clamp(1rem, 2.5vw, 2rem); sets a 1rem floor, a viewport-responsive preferred size, and a 2rem ceiling. Treat the bounds as design choices for your content, then check that text can still be enlarged without clipping or hiding anything.
How CSS clamp() makes type fluid
The function takes three comma-separated expressions in this order: minimum, preferred value, and maximum. The browser uses the preferred value while it falls between the bounds; below the minimum it uses the minimum, and above the maximum it uses the maximum. Its equivalent form is max(MIN, min(VAL, MAX)). See MDN’s clamp() reference.
In clamp(1rem, 2.5vw, 2rem), 1rem is the lower bound, 2.5vw changes with viewport width, and 2rem is the upper bound. The font grows as the viewport grows only while the preferred value stays within those limits. These example values are not universal: choose bounds based on the reading context and test them with your actual text and layout.
Write a bounded fluid font-size rule
Add the declaration to the selector for the text you want to size. This example uses a paragraph; choose a selector and bounds appropriate to your design.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
.intro {
font-size: clamp(1rem, 2.5vw, 2rem);
}
This lets the font size vary continuously with viewport width without a media query for that size rule. It does not replace media queries when the design needs a discrete change, such as a different layout or typographic treatment at a breakpoint.
Choose bounds that support text resizing
Use relative units for the bounds rather than locking the minimum and maximum to fixed pixel values. MDN advises that when clamp() controls text size, the maximum should be a relative length no less than twice the minimum; its example is clamp(1rem, 2.5vw, 2rem). This is practical guidance to help text scale to at least 200% when a page is zoomed, not proof that a finished page meets accessibility requirements.

WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.4 says: “Except for captions and images of text, text can be resized without assistive technology up to 200 percent without loss of content or functionality.” The W3C understanding page for SC 1.4.4 identifies incorrect use of viewport units to resize text as a common failure. A viewport-based preferred value is not automatically accessible: verify that users can enlarge text and still access all content and controls.
Check the page with enlarged text
- Open the page at representative narrow and wide viewport widths. Confirm the text grows between the chosen bounds and does not become too small or too large for its intended reading context.
- Enlarge text to 200% using the relevant browser or operating-system text resizing method, and also check browser zoom where appropriate. WCAG’s requirement concerns resizing without loss; do not rely on the normal viewport view alone.
- Read through the page and operate its controls. Look for clipped or truncated text, content that overlaps or is obscured, and buttons, links, or other functionality that becomes unavailable.
- If the check fails, revise the bounds or surrounding layout and test again. A font-size declaration cannot by itself guarantee that containers, line lengths, or controls accommodate enlarged text.
When to use clamp() instead of fixed or breakpoint-based sizing
| Approach | How size changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Fixed font-size |
Remains at one declared size rather than responding to viewport width. | Confirm the chosen size works across the layouts and remains resizable by the user. |
| Media-query sizing | Changes discretely when a breakpoint condition is met. | Check each breakpoint and the ranges between them; use it when a deliberate step change is needed. |
clamp() sizing |
Can change continuously with a preferred expression, while minimum and maximum expressions bound the result. | Check the actual viewport range, the chosen bounds, and enlarged text. Use additional breakpoints if the design needs discrete changes. |
These approaches can be combined: use clamp() for a fluid size within a range, and media queries for other layout or design changes.

MDN labels clamp() “Baseline” and “Widely available,” and says it has been available across browsers since July 2020. If exact browser-version support matters for your audience, consult MDN’s current compatibility table rather than relying on a version list that may become outdated.

If you need screenshots to inspect how a page renders at different sizes, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a URL as an image or PDF; it does not replace checking text resizing with assistive settings. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
