Flat Ethernet cables are better when a low-profile cable is easier to route; round cables may suit a route or installation that calls for a particular round-cable design. Neither shape alone tells you how fast, reliable, or durable a cable will be. Compare the specific cable’s category, length, construction, shielding, connectors, environmental rating, and installation guidance.
What the shape does—and does not—tell you
Flat and round describe a cable’s physical profile, not a complete performance rating. Product lines include different categories and constructions in both shapes: C-LIGHT lists flat and round Cat 6 options, including shielded and unshielded designs, while NETGEAR specifies twisted pairs in its flat Cat 5e cable. Those examples show why you should assess the exact product rather than infer performance from its shape.
The reviewed product pages do not establish a controlled, shape-only comparison. They support product-specific specifications and manufacturer-stated use cases, not a universal winner for speed, signal quality, or durability.

When a flat cable can be useful
A flat cable’s clearest advantage is routing convenience when clearance is tight or you want a low-profile path along a wall, desk edge, or behind furniture. NETGEAR describes its flat cable as easy to run around a table or along a wall. EDIMAX lists routing under carpet, around corners, along walls and doors, and behind furniture as intended uses for its flat cable. These are manufacturer use cases, not universal approval for every carpet, environment, or installation.

If the route benefits from a low profile, a flat Cat 6 Ethernet cable may be a practical choice. Match its length and construction to your needs, and check that its installation and environmental ratings suit the route. Cable clips or a raceway can help manage a wall or desk route; they do not improve network performance.
How to compare speed and construction fairly
Compare cables with the category and relevant construction in view. For example, NETGEAR lists its flat Cat 5e cable at up to 250 MHz, while EDIMAX lists its flat EA8 Cat 8 cable at up to 2000 MHz and up to 40 Gbps. These are manufacturer specifications for those specific products. They do not show that flat cables generally outperform round ones.

Construction also varies within a shape. C-LIGHT describes flat unshielded Cat 6 as well as round, soft-round, shielded, and unshielded variants. EDIMAX describes U/FTP shielding on its flat EA8 Cat 8 cable. To make a useful comparison, match category and relevant construction rather than comparing a flat cable and a round cable with different specifications.
Check these details on the exact product
- Category and stated performance: Compare the category and the manufacturer’s performance specifications.
- Length: Choose a length appropriate for the route; do not treat shape as a substitute for checking it.
- Conductor and pair construction: Check what the product documentation says.
- Shielding and environment: Match the cable’s shielding and installation rating to where it will run.
- Connectors: Confirm that the connectors suit the equipment and connection you need.
- Jacket and environmental rating: Check whether the product is rated for the conditions of the intended route.
- Bend guidance: Follow the exact product’s minimum bend guidance and avoid sharp kinks or crushing.
- Physical profile: Decide whether a flat or round profile better fits the available path.
How to handle bends and installation
Bend limits are product-specific, not universal rules for all cables of a given shape. Phoenix Contact lists a minimum bend radius of 4×D for fixed installation and 8×D for flexible installation for one specific round Cat 5 cable. Those values apply to that product; check the documentation for the cable you are installing. Avoid sharp kinks and crushing, and use any manufacturer guidance for the intended installation.

Which should you choose?
- Choose flat when a low-profile cable makes the route easier to manage and the specific product’s category, length, construction, and installation rating meet your needs.
- Choose round when a particular round product better suits the route or installation, based on its documented construction and guidance.
