You can use a Mac to flash a custom Android ROM with Google’s adb and fastboot tools, but there is no safe command sequence that applies to every phone. Install the tools, back up your data, and follow the current instructions for your exact device model or codename and chosen ROM before unlocking or flashing. The LineageOS instructions for the device named cas provide an example—not a recipe for other phones.
What ADB and fastboot do
adb communicates with Android or a compatible recovery. It can also request a reboot into bootloader mode. fastboot communicates with the bootloader and can unlock or flash a device when that device supports the operation. Google describes fastboot as the tool needed to unlock a bootloader and flash a new system image: Android SDK Platform-Tools release notes.
ADB sideload is a way to transfer and install a package from the computer through a compatible recovery. It does not make an incompatible ROM suitable for your phone, satisfy firmware or partition requirements, or remove the need to unlock the bootloader when required.

Install Android Platform-Tools on macOS
Google provides a Mac archive named platform-tools-latest-darwin.zip, which includes adb and fastboot. Its release notes list Platform-Tools 37.0.1, released in July 2026; the page was last updated October 1, 2026. Google generally recommends using the latest version. There are two documented ways to set up the tools on a Mac. Choose one; installing both is not required.

adb --version
fastboot --versionUse the mode-specific checks in your device’s installation guide as well. A command being installed on the Mac does not mean the phone supports every fastboot operation.
Prepare the phone and find its exact installation guide
- Identify the exact device and ROM. Find the current installation instructions for the phone’s model or codename and the specific ROM release. Confirm the guide applies to your device variant, and check its firmware, partition, recovery, and package requirements.
- Back up files and app data you need. Bootloader unlocking erases user data, including private app data and shared files accessible over USB. Android’s instructions describe an on-device confirmation during unlocking; see AOSP’s bootloader unlocking documentation.
- Enable the required Android settings, if the device guide calls for them. LineageOS’s Mac guide instructs users to enable Developer options and USB debugging before connecting the phone.
- Connect the phone and approve ADB access. With Android running, use
adb devices. Accept the USB debugging authorization prompt on the phone if it appears. The device should be listed before you continue with steps that require ADB. - Check unlock eligibility before attempting an unlock. Many phones ship with locked bootloaders. AOSP describes enabling OEM unlocking in Developer options when that setting is available, entering bootloader mode, and using the supported unlock process with on-device confirmation. If OEM unlocking is unavailable, the phone may not permit unlocking; manufacturer or carrier restrictions can apply. Do not substitute a generic command or try to bypass a restriction.
Unlock only with the device’s supported process
There is no universal unlock command. AOSP’s general flashing instructions show different examples for different device generations, while a manufacturer or ROM guide may specify a different supported process. Follow the instructions for your exact device, and confirm the unlock on the phone only if that is the documented procedure.

An unlocked bootloader allows modified software to boot, but the integrity of a custom operating system cannot be guaranteed. Data kept on a device with an unlocked bootloader may be at risk. Do not relock the bootloader as a routine final step: do so only if the instructions for that exact phone and ROM expressly support it. Follow the ROM guide for recovery, flashing, and sideloading
The recovery image, fastboot commands, reset procedure, partition handling, and package order are device-specific. Use the ROM’s current installation guide as the authority for each command. Do not copy a command from another phone’s page merely because it uses the same ROM.

Example: LineageOS for cas
The LineageOS guide for cas illustrates one possible sequence: download the recommended Lineage Recovery, enter fastboot mode, check detection with fastboot devices, flash the recovery image, and boot into recovery. From there, that guide instructs users to perform a factory reset and format data, then choose Apply update > Apply from ADB and run adb -d sideload /path/to/zip. It warns not to reboot into Android before completing the remaining instructions. The optional Google Apps add-on must be installed before the first boot. These details apply to the cas guide only; consult the current LineageOS installation guide for cas rather than applying them to another model.

The cas guide also says a signature-verification failure for a package can indicate a corrupted or unofficial image. Treat that as a reason to check the file and its source against the guide, not as a prompt to ignore verification or continue with an untrusted package.

Troubleshoot Mac-to-phone detection
adb devices does not list the phone
- Check that Android or a compatible recovery is running; bootloader mode alone is not the usual ADB state.
- Enable USB debugging if the device guide requires it, then accept the authorization prompt on the phone.
- Confirm the cable supports data, not just charging, and try another cable or Mac port if needed.
fastboot devices returns no device
- Check that the phone is actually in its bootloader or fastboot mode; ADB and fastboot operate in different states.
- Try a different data-capable cable and port before repeating any flash operation. Some device-specific bootloader USB issues may respond differently to a USB Type-A 2.0 connection or a hub, while LineageOS’s transfer-error guidance suggests avoiding hubs or adapters. These are troubleshooting possibilities, not universal requirements.
- If a fastboot command appears to stall, a buggy bootloader USB connection may be the cause. Check the phone’s state and the device guide before trying again; do not repeatedly issue destructive commands.
For transfer errors, LineageOS recommends checking the cable and connection in its Flash Tools documentation. The cable must support data and have connectors compatible with both the phone and Mac; replacing it is not a guaranteed fix.
When a browser-based tool may help
LineageOS offers browser-based Flash Tools that can sideload supported packages or perform fastboot actions. They are an alternate interface, not a fix for device incompatibility or a substitute for the exact installation guide. Use them only when the device and procedure are supported and you have a WebUSB-compatible browser; see LineageOS Flash Tools.
