If a fixed header, cookie bar, or sticky panel appears to cover different content in a Firefox screenshot, first determine whether the page moved or the capture workflow represented scrolling incorrectly. Mozilla Bugzilla reports describe a historical failure in Firefox’s region-selection flow: scrolling while dragging a selection could leave fixed content covering a different part of the final image than it covered during capture. Those reports concern Firefox Nightly 90.0a1 in 2021, so reproduce the behavior on your current Firefox release before calling it an active browser defect. Bug 1646063 and related Bug 1795527 document the original cases.
Why is my Firefox screenshot showing the fixed header in the wrong place?
A position: fixed element is anchored to the viewport, while a position: sticky element changes behavior as its scroll container moves. During ordinary rendering, each should cover the same viewport content at a given scroll position. The historical Firefox issue was different: the screenshot selection itself scrolled the page while the user dragged, and the final image could combine the overlay with a different document position than the preview showed.
That distinction matters. A mismatch may come from:
- the page layout or CSS actually changing while you capture;
- dynamic content, ads, fonts, or animations changing between frames;
- browser zoom, device-pixel-ratio, or viewport differences; or
- a screenshot path that mishandles scrolling and fixed or sticky layers.
Do not “fix” the CSS merely because a screenshot looks wrong. Inspect the rendered page and compare another capture route first.
What Mozilla’s documented reports establish
- Bug 1646063 describes selecting a region while the page scrolls during the drag. The expected result was for a fixed red block to cover the same page content it covered at capture time; the reported result showed it covering different content in the saved image.
- The report includes a 2021 reproduction against Firefox Nightly 90.0a1. It is historical evidence, not proof that current Firefox still fails.
- Bug 1795527 describes fixed and sticky elements after scrolling and was resolved as a duplicate of 1646063. A workaround in an old comment should not be treated as a current preference or guaranteed fix without verification.
Mozilla’s current support documentation confirms that Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot interface can capture the visible area or the full page: Take screenshots in Firefox.
Diagnose the mismatch before changing code
1. Record a reproducible state
Write down the Firefox version, operating system, URL (or a sanitized reproduction), viewport width and height, browser zoom, scroll position, and capture type: visible area, full page, selected region, or element. Also note whether the page uses nested scrolling containers, transforms, or a sticky element whose containing block is not the document.
2. Compare selection with no-selection capture
- Load the page and wait for fonts, images, and asynchronous content.
- Take a normal visible-area or full-page screenshot without scrolling during selection.
- Repeat the test by dragging a region and intentionally allowing the page to scroll while you drag.
- Compare the preview and the saved file. If only the scrolling-selection version moves the fixed or sticky layer, you have isolated the historical failure mode.
3. Check the page itself
Open Developer Tools and inspect the element while changing scroll position. Confirm its computed position, containing block, offsets, and z-index. Look for JavaScript that toggles classes on scroll, transitions that are still running, or a transformed ancestor (transform, filter, or perspective) that changes how a fixed descendant is positioned. Pause animations temporarily and disable extensions that inject banners or toolbars.
4. Repeat through a different Firefox route
If the built-in region tool is the only failing path, use Developer Tools full-page capture or capture the element directly. Firefox documents these alternatives, including the Screenshot Node command and the console :screenshot helper, in Taking screenshots. Agreement between DevTools and a normal viewport capture points toward the selection workflow rather than your layout.

Why do sticky elements move in a full-page screenshot?
Full-page capture is not simply one very tall viewport. The browser may scroll through segments, paint each segment, and stitch them together. A sticky element can be in its normal-flow position in one segment and “stuck” to an inset edge in another. A fixed element should remain viewport-bound, but stitching or a scrolling-selection interaction can duplicate it, omit it, or place it over the wrong document content.
To make the result interpretable:
- Test with the sticky or fixed component hidden, then with it visible.
- Capture at a fixed viewport and zoom level.
- Disable carousels, clocks, live chat, and other moving content.
- Check nested scroll regions separately; a sticky child follows its nearest scrolling ancestor.
Do not infer that position: fixed or position: sticky is invalid. The documented bug concerns how a capture can represent those layers after scrolling, not a general CSS rule failure.

How do I screenshot just one element in Firefox?
Use DevTools rather than a manually dragged rectangle. Open DevTools (F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I), inspect the target node, then open the node’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node. This avoids selection scrolling and limits the capture to the element and its descendants.
You can also use the Web Console’s documented :screenshot helper with a CSS selector. The Firefox documentation lists options for a delay, device-pixel ratio, full-page output, and selector targeting: Taking screenshots. A selector capture is useful for a header, modal, chart, or card whose position you need to verify independently of the rest of the page.
Making automated comparisons repeatable with Playwright
For a team regression case, set an explicit viewport, wait for the page to settle, and compare screenshots against a committed baseline. Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation explains screenshot assertions and baseline updates; its screenshot parameters reference the capture options.

- Use the same browser version, operating-system image, viewport, and device scale in comparison runs.
- Wait for a deterministic readiness signal rather than an arbitrary short sleep where possible.
- Use a screenshot stylesheet to hide clocks, ads, chat launchers, rotating content, and other intentional noise when that is appropriate for the test.
- Capture the whole page and the affected element separately so a failure identifies layout versus stitching.
- Update baselines only after reviewing the rendered page, not merely because a diff exists.
These controls make differences easier to classify; they do not prove that Firefox’s built-in capture issue is fixed.
Common failures and fixes
The header is displaced only when I drag a region
Cause: the page scrolls during selection and the capture path misrepresents a fixed layer. Fix: avoid scrolling during selection, use DevTools full-page or Screenshot Node capture, and test the current Firefox release before filing a defect.
The header moves in every capture
Cause: page CSS or script, not necessarily Firefox. Inspect scroll listeners, sticky containing blocks, transformed ancestors, and responsive breakpoints. Freeze animations and reproduce at a fixed viewport.

The sticky bar is duplicated in a full-page image
Cause: segment stitching or a sticky element being painted in multiple scroll positions. Capture the element alone, temporarily disable the sticky rule for a diagnostic run, and compare with a viewport screenshot.
The DevTools screenshot button is missing
Open DevTools settings and enable the screenshot control in the toolbox. If the control still does not appear, confirm that you are using a current Firefox build and try the console helper documented by Mozilla.

Automation output differs from a manual screenshot
Cause: different viewport, DPR, zoom, browser build, fonts, cookies, or readiness timing. Log those values, wait for network and application readiness, and use the same environment for baseline and comparison runs.
A bug report cannot be reproduced by others
Reduce the page to a minimal reproduction and include the exact Firefox and geckodriver versions, operating system, URL or local fixture, viewport, scroll position, capture steps, and automation calls. Mozilla’s reporting guidance is at Reporting bugs.

Does Firefox currently have a confirmed fixed-header screenshot bug?
The cited Mozilla reports are historical. They document a real reproduction in older Firefox builds, but they do not establish that the same defect remains in the current release. Reproduce it on the version you use.

Should I replace position: sticky with position: fixed?
No. First establish whether the page renders incorrectly or only the screenshot workflow does. Changing positioning can introduce new layout and accessibility problems.
What evidence should accompany a Firefox automation issue?
Provide a minimal page, exact browser and driver versions, operating system, viewport and scroll state, capture method, automation calls, and files showing expected versus actual output.
