Start by identifying what actually fails: a game that closes to the desktop needs a different first response from a frozen PC, a Windows stop-code screen, or a computer that shuts off or restarts. The symptom, any error code, and what changed recently are clues—not proof of a single cause. Work from reversible checks toward hardware isolation, testing after each change.

First, identify the kind of crash

Note exactly what happens when the failure occurs. Does the game close to the desktop without a message, freeze while Windows remains usable, leave a black screen while sound continues, show a Windows stop code, or make the whole computer power off or restart? Also record whether one game or several are affected, whether the problem began after a driver, game, Windows, or hardware change, and whether it happens only during demanding play.

If the game displays an error code, use the game’s support guidance for that code. Riot’s general PC game crash guide addresses crashes without a specific error and covers cases such as a game closing without a message, freezing, or producing a black screen.

If only the game crashes to desktop

Begin with changes that are easy to reverse. Check the game’s minimum system requirements, restart the PC, and test the game after each step rather than changing several things at once. Riot’s general sequence also includes updating graphics drivers and Windows, trying a clean boot to isolate background-software conflicts, resetting GPU software settings, reducing graphics settings, and, if necessary, reinstalling the game.

  1. Check the game’s stated minimum system requirements against your PC.
  2. Restart Windows and test the same game scenario again.
  3. Install supported Windows and graphics-driver updates. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, review the game and GPU maker’s known issues before changing drivers again.
  4. Reset GPU control-panel settings and disable third-party tuning temporarily. Lower in-game graphics settings, then raise them gradually if stability returns.
  5. Use a clean boot to check whether a background application is involved. Re-enable normal startup items afterward.
  6. Repair or reinstall the game only if the simpler checks do not resolve the problem; follow the game maker’s instructions.

For a recent AMD driver update, AMD advises checking that driver’s release notes and considering a previous driver only when the specific issue is known and documented. NVIDIA’s graphics troubleshooting guidance also points to game patches and file repair, driver installation, chipset drivers on custom PCs, background applications, and overclocking as areas to investigate.

If Windows freezes, shows a stop code, or restarts

Treat a whole-system failure as a separate path from a game closing on its own. Write down the time, the exact stop code if shown, whether the PC restarted or powered off, and any recent hardware, software, or driver changes. Check Windows crash records or Event Viewer for entries around that time. Microsoft recommends correlating system-log errors with the stop error and checking for recently added drivers, services, or hardware.

An unexpected-restart entry such as “Kernel-Power” records that Windows did not shut down normally; by itself, it does not establish why. A stop code or module name can narrow the investigation, but it does not prove which component failed. Microsoft says, “There’s no simple explanation for the cause of stop errors,” and notes that unexpected restarts can involve hardware, drivers, or software. See Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance and unexpected restart guidance.

Microsoft reports that, in its analysis of Windows stop errors, 70% were caused by third-party driver code, 10% by hardware, 5% by Microsoft code, and 15% had unknown causes because memory was too corrupted to analyze. The retrieved documentation does not state a publication year for these figures. They describe Microsoft’s stop-error analysis—not gaming crashes generally or all PC failures—so they should not be used to estimate the cause of a particular crash.

Return tuning to stock before testing hardware

Overclocks and tuning can make a PC unstable under gaming loads. Before diagnosing components, restore CPU, GPU, and memory settings to factory defaults, including any memory profile or voltage changes you have made. AMD recommends using a stock configuration, keeping the OS, drivers, and firmware current, temporarily disabling third-party tuning and monitoring utilities, removing nonessential peripherals and aftermarket risers or extensions, and improving airflow.

Change one variable at a time and retest under the conditions that normally trigger the failure. That makes the result more useful: if several settings, drivers, and devices change together, it becomes harder to identify what mattered.

Airflow and dust

Make sure the case has a clear path for intake and exhaust airflow. Inspect for dust buildup; clean only if dust is present, using safe methods and following the equipment maker’s instructions. NVIDIA notes that dust can impede heat escape and recommends safe compressed-air dust removers for dusty systems. Cleaning is a maintenance step, not a universal crash fix, and a temperature reading alone does not prove that a component is defective.

Power supply and connections

Check that the power supply meets the graphics card’s requirements and that the GPU’s power connectors are fully connected. AMD advises checking direct power connections and, where applicable, using independent PSU cables rather than relying on a single cable with multiple connectors. Follow the PSU and GPU manuals; if you are unsure which connections are appropriate, ask the system or component vendor instead of guessing.

GPU and memory installation

If you are comfortable opening the PC and it is safe to do so, check that a discrete graphics card is seated in the motherboard’s primary PCIe slot. Confirm that the memory kit is compatible and installed in the motherboard’s recommended slots. AMD suggests testing memory modules individually where appropriate. These checks require care; if you are unfamiliar with PC hardware, seek help rather than reseating parts while the system is powered.

NVIDIA notes that CPU, memory, motherboard, and storage problems can also become apparent during intensive applications. MSI’s computer-crash guidance likewise recommends checking overheating, Windows and BIOS updates, graphics drivers, GPU seating, and overclocked CPU or RAM settings. Testing with another PSU or GPU can help isolate a fault when suitable parts are available, but component swaps are an advanced step—not a first response for every player.

Use Windows checks and diagnostics selectively

  • Install applicable Windows updates and check Device Manager for devices marked with a warning.
  • If newly added hardware preceded the crashes, remove it temporarily if practical and retest.
  • Use relevant hardware or memory tests, following the PC or component maker’s instructions.
  • Keep adequate free space on the Windows drive. Microsoft’s general guidance mentions 10–15% free disk space, but the amount needed varies by system; it is not a gaming-crash threshold.

Microsoft’s bug-check documentation covers event evidence, memory tests, devices, file-system checks, free space, firmware, and connections. Advanced crash-dump analysis can be difficult without experience with Windows internals, so do not treat a dump or log entry as a diagnosis in isolation.

Choose the next step by risk and skill

Step Best fit Reversibility and skill
Requirements, restart, supported updates, and lower graphics settings Game-only crashes and initial checks for broader instability Low risk; straightforward
Clean boot, disabling tuning tools, or restoring stock settings Possible software conflicts or instability under load Generally reversible; requires noting what was changed
Logs, Windows checks, and vendor diagnostics Freezes, stop codes, restarts, or crashes that persist after basic checks Low to moderate effort; interpretation may require technical experience
Reseating components or testing with another PSU or GPU Hardware isolation when evidence points toward a component or simpler checks fail More technical; use manuals or qualified help
Firmware changes, Windows recovery, or component replacement Later diagnosis supported by the manufacturer or a repair professional Higher risk; follow exact instructions and back up important data before recovery or a clean installation

When to get expert help

If instability continues after basic isolation, use diagnostics supplied by the PC or component manufacturer, contact the relevant vendor, or consult a qualified repair professional. Avoid updating BIOS, reinstalling Windows, or replacing parts just because a game crashed; those steps need a specific reason and the correct manufacturer instructions. Back up important data before recovery or a clean installation.
