If YouTube buffers when your device moves between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, band switching could be interrupting the connection—but it is not the only possible cause. Give each band a separate network name if your router allows it, test them one at a time where the TV or playback device sits, and compare stability. Then work through YouTube’s playback checks before changing router hardware.
Why switching Wi-Fi bands may interrupt a stream
2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are different Wi-Fi frequency bands. Many routers use one network name for both and steer compatible devices between them; the exact behavior and controls depend on the router and device. A transition could coincide with a short interruption, but there is no established statistic showing how often band switching causes YouTube live-stream buffering, and the timing alone does not prove that it is the cause.
The bands have different trade-offs. Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz as generally reaching farther and working better through obstacles, while 5 GHz generally offers faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels but has shorter range. These are tendencies, not guarantees: distance, walls, interference, device support, and conditions in your home all matter. Microsoft Support
Check whether the band change is actually involved
Observe the interruption
Note when buffering starts and what the device reports. Does Wi-Fi disconnect or reconnect, does the picture merely drop in quality, or does playback pause while the connection appears intact? If your router or device displays the connected band, check whether it changes around the interruption. Do not assume a band switch occurred just because buffering happens during a long stream.

- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Compare other playback
Try another YouTube video and another streaming service on the same device. If possible, check another device on the same Wi-Fi. Problems across several services or devices point toward a broader connection, router, modem, or internet-provider issue rather than a YouTube-only problem.
Test 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately
- Look for separate network names in the router settings. Sign in to your router’s administration interface or app and look for Wi-Fi network names, band steering, or similar wireless settings. Menu names and available controls vary by model. If the router supports separate names (SSIDs) for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, assign them distinct names so you can choose a band on the playback device. Microsoft recommends distinct names to identify bands. Linksys documents a band-steering control for the EA8250 specifically; that menu should not be assumed to exist on other routers. Microsoft Support; Linksys Support
- Connect to one band at the playback location. On the TV or playback device, open its Wi-Fi settings and join the 2.4 GHz network. Play the same stream and note signal strength, dropouts, buffering frequency, and the approximate time of each interruption.
- Repeat on the other band under similar conditions. Connect to the 5 GHz network and compare using the same device, location, stream, and a similar time window. A nearby device with a strong signal is a reasonable situation in which to try 5 GHz first; for greater distance or intervening walls, test 2.4 GHz as well.
- Choose by observed stability, not a speed-test peak. Compare signal strength and dropouts at the TV, buffering during the same stream, distance and walls, interference and household network load, and whether other devices or services also fail. There is no universal signal threshold or controlled test establishing a guaranteed result for this specific buffering scenario.
If separate network names are unavailable, check your router maker’s instructions for its model. You can still try YouTube’s general playback checks below, and compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection if your device supports one.

Apply YouTube’s playback checks
YouTube recommends several general steps for playback problems. Try the ones that match your device and connection; they can help whether or not band switching is involved. YouTube Help
- Try another internet connection, if one is available.
- Lower the playback quality manually and see whether playback becomes more stable.
- Restart the TV, phone, computer, or other playback device, and install available device and YouTube app updates.
- On platforms that provide the option, clear the YouTube app cache.
- Move the device closer to the router or to a position with fewer obstacles.
- Reduce wireless interference and pause other household activity that is using substantial network capacity.
Live playback can also be affected by congestion and other factors. If lowering video quality helps, that suggests the connection may not be sustaining the selected playback quality at that moment; it does not identify band switching as the cause.

Use a wired comparison if your device supports it
If the TV or playback device has Ethernet, or supports a compatible Ethernet adapter, connect it directly to the router and repeat the playback check. A practical cable run is needed; buying a cable or adapter is not a required fix. If wired playback works reliably while Wi-Fi does not, focus on wireless coverage, interference, router settings, and the device’s wireless connection. If both wired and Wi-Fi playback fail, investigate the internet connection or service as well. TP-Link describes wired testing as a way to distinguish connection problems from router or ISP issues, but its computer-to-modem guidance is not a guaranteed TV diagnosis. TP-Link Support

- Only one band performs poorly: Recheck its signal and dropouts at the playback location, then review the router maker’s guidance for that model.
- Only one device has trouble: Check the device manufacturer’s support instructions, available software updates, and its Wi-Fi capabilities.
- Several devices or services fail: Check router and modem operation and contact your internet provider if the connection problem persists.
Router firmware, wireless settings, and band-steering controls vary by model and location. Avoid choosing a specific channel, channel width, or steering feature as a universal fix; consult the instructions for your router before changing those settings.
