If Windows 11 keeps changing a default app, first reset the exact file type or link protocol that changed in Settings > Apps > Default apps. A single default app selection does not necessarily change every association. If multiple choices revert at sign-in on a work or school PC, ask IT to check whether an organization policy is applying them.

How to change the default app that Windows 11 is using

Windows sets defaults for individual file types and link protocols as well as for apps. For example, changing the app associated with .pdf files does not necessarily change the app used for every other type of file or link.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  2. Search for the affected extension, such as .pdf, or the specific link type or protocol.
  3. Select the result, then choose the app you want Windows to use.

You can also search for an app on the Default apps page and select it to review and change the file types and protocols it handles. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps in Windows.

Why does Windows 11 keep changing my default apps?

There is no single cause established for every PC. What changed, when it changed, and whether the computer is managed by an organization can help narrow it down.

Only one file type or protocol changed

Return to Default apps and set the exact extension or protocol that changed. If the app you want is missing or does not appear as a choice, check that it is installed and registered to handle that type. Microsoft’s guidance explains how to assign associations, but does not identify what caused an individual PC’s setting to change.

Several choices revert when you sign in

On a work- or school-managed PC, ask IT whether an administrator has configured an ApplicationDefaults policy. Microsoft says in its ApplicationDefaults Policy CSP documentation: “When set, default associations will be applied on sign-in to the PC.” The policy can define defaults for file types and protocols.

For Windows 11 version 22H2, the policy documentation describes XML attributes that affect when associations apply: Version controls when suggested associations are applied, and Suggested="true" applies an association once for the current version rather than at every sign-in. An administrator can increment the version to trigger another one-time application. These are management settings for IT, not consumer registry fixes.

The change followed an operating-system upgrade

Microsoft’s deployment guidance says some inbox app associations can be reassigned during an upgrade. That is different from saying that every routine Windows update resets defaults. Its article on exporting or importing default application associations describes XML and DISM tools for Windows image deployment and device management. It was last updated August 26, 2021, so administrators should validate the behavior on the Windows release they currently manage.

You cannot change the default browser

Check whether the PC is running Windows 11 in S mode. Microsoft Support states: “When you’re using Windows 11 in S mode, Microsoft Edge is always the default web browser, and Bing is the default search engine.” Microsoft also says leaving S mode is permanent. See its Windows 11 in S mode FAQ before deciding whether to switch out.

What to check if the setting changes again

  • Note the exact extension or protocol that changed, rather than only the app name.
  • Record whether the change happened after an upgrade, after installing or updating an app, or at sign-in.
  • Check whether the PC is in S mode and whether it is managed by work or school.
  • If it is managed, give IT the affected associations and the timing so they can review Group Policy or MDM app-default settings. Microsoft’s app defaults documentation covers supported management mechanisms and app integration.

The available Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal Windows 11 defect that resets everyone’s defaults, or a consumer procedure that prevents every future association change. Pinpointing a particular PC’s cause depends on its association, Windows edition and build, recent app activity, sign-in timing, S mode status, and management configuration.
