If a monitored site has moved, run urlwatch --change-location OLD_URL NEW_URL to update the job while preserving its history. Replacing the URL directly in urls.yaml creates a new job with no history. First confirm the destination really changed; a temporary connection problem or HTTP error is not proof of a move.
Confirm the problem is a changed URL
urlwatch monitors pages and reports changes, including a unified diff. An error may instead come from a temporary connection problem or an HTTP error, so check the configured location and the destination before changing the job. The urlwatch 2.29 handbook documents these as distinct error categories. Read the urlwatch handbook.
- Find the affected job in
urls.yaml, or open the configuration withurlwatch --edit. - For a URL job, inspect its
urlfield and note the exact current address. - Verify the intended new address and that it returns the page content you want to monitor.
- If the destination has not actually changed, investigate the connection or HTTP error rather than changing the job location.
Change the job location without losing history
Use urlwatch’s location-change command with the exact old and new job locations:
urlwatch --change-location https://example.org/old https://example.org/newReplace the example addresses with the locations in your own job and the verified destination. urlwatch stores job history based on the URL parameter; editing the URL in urls.yaml directly therefore creates a new job without the old history. The handbook documents --change-location for URL jobs and says it also changes the navigate location for Browser jobs and the command for Shell jobs. See “Updating a URL and keeping past history.”

When editing urls.yaml directly is appropriate
You can edit the affected job’s url field in urls.yaml, but do so only if starting a new job with no prior history is acceptable. If retaining the existing history matters, use --change-location instead. URL jobs require a url field, as described in the urlwatch jobs documentation.
When to use a Browser job
If the new page depends on JavaScript and a URL job does not retrieve the content you need, a Browser job may be a better fit. The urlwatch 2.29 handbook says Browser jobs require Playwright and are resource-intensive, and recommends them when a URL job does not return suitable results. They are not a general fix for an incorrect address or a transient network failure. Read about Browser jobs.

Troubleshoot errors that remain
- The old job still appears: Check that you used the exact old location from the job and that you are inspecting the relevant job configuration.
- The new destination still errors: Verify the address and distinguish a connection error from an HTTP error. A location change does not make an unavailable destination reachable.
- You are considering ignoring errors: urlwatch supports per-job options to ignore connection errors and selected HTTP error codes. These options suppress error reporting; they do not verify a move or repair a destination. Consult the documentation on job options before using them.
- The page loads but the monitored content is missing: If the content is rendered by JavaScript, consider a Browser job and account for its Playwright requirement and higher resource use.
