If you can’t RDP to a Windows Azure VM using AAD (now Microsoft Entra ID) credentials, first confirm that Entra sign-in is enabled on the VM and that your account has the required Azure VM login role. Then check the client’s Entra state and credential format. If those identity checks pass, troubleshoot the connection path: native RDP and Azure portal Bastion have different requirements, and a general network or RDP failure can look like a credential problem.
First identify the connection path and exact error
Are you connecting with Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) or through the Azure portal using Connect > Bastion? Record the full error text and which path you used. Portal Bastion has additional prerequisites that do not automatically apply to native RDP.
Identity-related messages such as “Your account is configured to prevent you from using this device,” “Your credentials didn’t work,” “unauthorized client,” “no Azure roles assigned,” or “two-factor authentication sign-in method required” point toward Entra sign-in, authorization, or authentication requirements. If the client cannot reach the remote computer at all, check RDP configuration and network connectivity as well; a credential prompt does not prove that the credentials are the cause.
Confirm Entra sign-in is enabled on the Azure VM
Microsoft Entra sign-in to a Windows Azure VM requires the AADLoginForWindows VM extension and an Azure role assignment for the user. Extension deployment also depends on the VM’s system-assigned managed identity being enabled. In the Azure portal, inspect the VM’s identity settings and extension status; the extension should show provisioning state Succeeded. See Microsoft’s Windows VM sign-in guidance.

If extension provisioning failed, inspect its deployment result and logs rather than reinstalling or changing it blindly. On the VM, Microsoft identifies CommandExecution.log in C:WindowsAzureLogsPluginsMicrosoft.Azure.ActiveDirectory.AADLoginForWindows1.0.0.1 as a diagnostic location. Also check the Azure Instance Metadata Service responses as directed by the deployment guidance.
Check that your account has a VM login role
The user signing in needs one of these Azure roles, assigned at the VM or an applicable parent scope:

- Virtual Machine User Login grants regular-user sign-in.
- Virtual Machine Administrator Login grants administrator sign-in.
Having the Owner or Contributor role alone doesn’t grant sign-in privileges. If the error says “Your account is configured to prevent you from using this device,” ask an administrator to verify the login-role assignment and its scope, not just your general access to the Azure resource.
Verify the Windows client and credential format
Microsoft’s documented Entra RDP flows require a supported Windows client whose registration or join state matches the VM’s Entra directory. For a Windows 10-or-later device that is Entra-registered, use the username format AzureADuser@domain.com. For Entra-joined or hybrid-joined clients, confirm the device is joined to the same directory as the VM. A temporary password cannot be used for remote desktop sign-in.

For a device-state check, run dsregcmd /status on the client. Microsoft’s documented expected state for the relevant joined/SSO scenario includes AzureAdJoined : YES and AzureAdPrt : YES; interpret the output in the context of the client’s join type rather than treating every different result as a password failure.
Microsoft also calls out the Allow PKU2U authentication requests to this computer to use online identities Network security policy setting on both client and server for unauthorized-client problems. Check that the AADLoginForWindows extension has not been removed after the VM was joined. Entra RDP sign-in events can help distinguish these issues: on the VM, open Event Viewer and go to Applications and Services LogsMicrosoftWindowsAADOperational.

Review Conditional Access and the sign-in method
A password that appears correct does not rule out a Conditional Access block. If a policy applies, have the tenant administrator inspect the sign-in log and the policy result for the Microsoft Azure Windows Virtual Machine Sign-in cloud app. Confirm that the RDP client supplies the authentication claim required by the policy, especially when multifactor authentication is required. Microsoft lists an unsupported two-factor sign-in method among common Entra RDP errors.
There are also flow-specific limitations: Conditional Access device-configuration rules are not supported when connecting from a Windows Server device. Windows Hello for Business RDP is supported with certificate trust, not key trust. Confirm the actual sign-in event and policy outcome before changing a tenant policy.

If you use Azure portal Bastion, check its additional requirements
These checks apply to Entra RDP started through the Azure portal’s Bastion connection flow; they are not general requirements for native RDP. Microsoft’s Bastion Entra RDP guidance calls for the following:
- A supported Windows guest version, with the VM’s Entra identity and successful
AADLoginForWindowsextension setup. - Azure Bastion at Basic SKU or higher.
- A connection started from the target VM’s portal Connect > Bastion pane, using the VM hostname rather than an IP address.
Portal Entra RDP cannot be combined with graphical session recording in this documented flow. If you are using native RDP instead, do not apply Bastion-only checks as though they were prerequisites for that connection.
If identity checks pass, troubleshoot ordinary RDP connectivity
Work through the general RDP checks separately from Entra authorization. Microsoft’s RDP troubleshooting guidance covers configuration, networking, VM health, and recovery:
- Check RDP configuration. If remote connections or Windows Firewall rules may be blocking access, use Azure’s RDP configuration reset option before moving to more disruptive recovery actions.
- Check the network path. Verify that the network security group allows inbound TCP 3389, then inspect effective security rules and routes. Check the VM’s NIC and any firewall between the client and VM.
- Check VM health. Review boot diagnostics and Resource Health for boot or platform issues that could prevent an RDP session.
- Consider a restart only after the checks above. If it does not resolve the issue, treat redeploy as a later troubleshooting step, not a routine first fix. Redeploy can discard ephemeral disk data and may change dynamic IP addresses.
For domain credentials or NLA errors, use a separate recovery branch
If the VM is domain-joined and the reported failure concerns domain credentials or Network Level Authentication (NLA), the cause may be outside Entra VM login roles. Microsoft lists domain-controller connectivity or health, a machine secure-channel or password mismatch, encryption/TLS compatibility, and FIPS configuration among possible causes; see its domain-join and sign-in troubleshooting guidance.

Do not use that workaround as a fix for a missing Entra login role or a Conditional Access denial.
