If Windows Update shows “Attention Needed,” read the entire message before changing settings or trying to force an upgrade. Microsoft’s related upgrade prompt is worded “What needs your attention”; it can identify an app, driver, hardware component, Windows feature, or known compatibility issue. The correct next step depends on the exact wording and whether Windows is withholding a feature upgrade or reporting an update installation error.
First, identify which “Attention Needed” message you have
The title wording “Attention Needed” is not an exact match for the Microsoft Support article about “What needs your attention.” That article describes a notification shown during a Windows upgrade, not every message that might appear in Windows Update settings. Check the full text on your screen, any named app or component, and whether Windows says an upgrade is unavailable or displays an error code. A compatibility notice can mean Windows is temporarily withholding a newer version to avoid a problem on your device. That is different from an error while downloading or installing a routine update.
Choose the fix that matches the prompt

“No action is needed”: wait on a known issue
If the prompt says “No action is needed” or identifies a known issue, Microsoft recommends remaining on your current version. Its guidance states, “Microsoft recommends staying on the current version of Windows.” Windows Update will offer the upgrade if the issue is eventually resolved. Do not treat this message as an invitation to bypass the compatibility block.

Incompatible app: update or remove it, then refresh
If Windows names an incompatible app and your device is online, follow Learn more or update instead in the notification. Review the compatibility information and look for an updated version from the software provider. If you no longer need the app, use the uninstall option offered by the prompt. If it cannot remove the app automatically, Microsoft points to manual uninstall guidance or support.
- Open the linked compatibility information from the notification.
- Update the app from its provider, or uninstall it if it is not needed.
- Return to the notification and select Refresh.
Privacy setting: change only the setting identified
Microsoft says an incompatible privacy setting can be addressed by changing privacy settings, but the appropriate change depends on the exact notice. Use the prompt’s details and Microsoft’s Windows privacy guidance; do not switch a specific toggle based on a generic “Attention Needed” label alone.

Driver, hardware, or Windows feature: use the named compatibility detail
A driver, hardware component, or Windows feature may be incompatible with the upgrade, but the notification’s specific information matters. Microsoft’s explanation does not prescribe a universal fix for these categories. Use the linked details, if available, before changing a driver or considering hardware changes.
If Windows reports an update download or installation error
Use the troubleshooter when Windows reports that an update failed to download or install—for example, with an error code. It is not a guaranteed way to clear a feature-upgrade safeguard that is intentionally blocking a version change.

- On Windows 11, start with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app, as Microsoft recommends.
- Follow the troubleshooter’s instructions and restart the device if prompted.
- Check for updates again.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes from Microsoft. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. This lifecycle change does not, by itself, explain why a particular “Attention Needed” prompt appears; diagnose that message from its full wording and named cause.
