If Spotify pauses the moment Discord opens, first check whether it is actually pausing on app launch or only after Discord starts voice chat, screen sharing, or Go Live. Discord documents an automatic pause when Spotify is playing and your microphone transmits in voice chat for 30 seconds; that is different from a pause caused simply by opening the app. On Android, try the background-data and battery settings described below. On Windows, check Spotify’s Exclusive Mode if other apps cannot use the same audio device.
Pin down what triggers the pause
Before changing settings, note exactly when playback stops and which device and operating system you are using. The trigger determines which checks are relevant:
- Discord merely opens, before you join a call.
- You enter voice chat, transmit through your microphone, start Screenshare, or use Go Live.
- A voice message, video, or another app starts playing audio.
- Spotify pauses when any unrelated app opens, not just Discord.
Reports such as “When I open Discord it will pause my Spotify” describe individual users’ experiences, not how often the problem occurs or a single confirmed cause.

Discord says Spotify will stop if your microphone transmits in voice chat for 30 seconds while Spotify is playing. Its support article also identifies Voice Chat, Screenshare, and Go Live as features where the auto-pause error may appear. Discord explains that the pause is intended to keep Spotify use aligned with its terms for personal and private listening. This documented behavior applies to sustained microphone transmission; it does not explain a pause that happens as soon as Discord opens.

To reduce continuous microphone activation, try Push-to-Talk or adjust voice activity sensitivity in Discord’s voice settings. If playback stops only after you begin transmitting or sharing, this behavior is more consistent with Discord’s documented auto-pause than with an app-launch problem.
If opening Discord alone pauses Spotify on Android
Android uses audio focus to coordinate which app has priority for sound. Android’s developer guidance says an app should stop, pause, or lower its volume when another app gains audio focus. That makes audio focus a plausible explanation for a pause when Discord opens or plays audio, but it does not prove that this is the cause on a particular phone.

Try Spotify background and battery settings
- Open your phone’s app settings for Spotify and allow background data if it is restricted.
- In Spotify’s battery or background-use settings, remove restrictions or optimization that may prevent it from continuing playback.
- Open Discord’s Accessibility settings and try enabling Reduced Motion.
Android setting names and locations vary by manufacturer and OS version. These steps were suggested by a Spotify Community moderator in response to this reported symptom; they are experiments, not guaranteed fixes. Users in the same discussion also reported that unlinking accounts, clearing app data, reinstalling, and restarting did not always resolve the issue.
If Spotify and Discord compete for a Windows audio device
On Windows, check Exclusive Mode if Spotify and Discord cannot play through the same output device. Spotify says that when it has exclusive access to a selected device, other apps cannot play through that device.

- Open Spotify and go to Settings > Playback.
- Turn off Exclusive Mode if the setting is enabled.
- If the setting is unavailable, select another output device if possible; Spotify says the toggle appears only for compatible external audio devices, not Bluetooth headphones or speakers, built-in speakers, or virtual audio devices.
Test whether the Discord account connection matters
If the problem seems tied to your linked Spotify account rather than audio focus or the output device, disconnect the integration temporarily as an isolation test. In Spotify’s desktop app, go to Connections > Spotify, select the X, then choose Disconnect. Spotify documents this connection as a way to show friends what you are playing. Disconnecting can help determine whether the integration is involved, but it does not test Android’s system-level audio focus.
Spotify’s Listen Along feature requires Premium and cannot be used while voice chatting. Keep that limitation separate from the issue of Spotify pausing merely because Discord opens.

If Spotify also pauses with other apps
If several unrelated apps trigger the same problem, compare playback on another device or in Spotify’s web player. That helps distinguish a phone or computer audio issue from a problem limited to one Spotify app installation.

- Restart Spotify and install available app updates.
- Check that your connection is stable, update the device’s operating system, and close other apps.
- Check available device memory and battery settings; clearing Spotify’s cache may also help.
- Reinstall Spotify only if the simpler checks fail. Saved offline music and podcasts may need to be downloaded again afterward.
Keep song-transition pauses separate
If playback stops abruptly at a song change during a shared Listen Along session, Spotify’s Discord FAQ identifies crossfade as a possible cause. It also says a mobile Listen Along session may end if the device sleeps and a song finishes. Those session-specific cases are different from Spotify pausing when Discord launches.
