Then verify the effective viewport, device scale factor, screenshot scale, and capture region. A larger image, a full-page capture, and a clipped or element capture can all be expected results rather than a viewport defect.
Check what dimensions you are comparing
Write down the intended viewport width and height in CSS pixels, then inspect the actual image file’s pixel width and height. These measurements can differ: a capture may be rendered at device-pixel scale rather than one output pixel per CSS pixel. Also note whether you expect the visible viewport, the entire page, or a selected region.
Before changing settings, record the capture implementation, browser and version, request parameters, and response metadata. The title alone does not establish which service or framework produced the image, so the right fix depends on the configuration that actually ran.
Diagnose the configuration in order
1. Confirm the effective viewport
In Playwright, set the viewport on the context or page that creates the screenshot. The official documentation says page.setViewportSize() resizes the page and recommends calling it before navigation because many sites are not designed to have their viewport changed after loading. The call also resets the screen size; if both screen and viewport need explicit values, configure both on the context. See Playwright’s Page documentation.

2. Look for device presets and later overrides
Device emulation can set several independent properties, including viewport, screen, user agent, touch support, and device scale factor. A device preset includes its own viewport. If you spread a preset into Playwright project configuration, put your desired overrides after it so they take precedence. Check the final configuration rather than assuming the value in one file survived subsequent setup. See Playwright’s emulation guide.
3. Match screenshot scale to the expected output
Playwright screenshot options support scale: "css", which produces one image pixel per CSS pixel, and scale: "device", which produces one image pixel per device pixel. Device-scale output can therefore be larger on a high-DPI configuration. Compare the actual setting and device scale factor; do not assume a universal multiplier. See Playwright’s screenshot options.

4. Check the region being captured
A screenshot with fullPage: true represents the full scrollable page, not just the viewport. A clip can restrict or alter the captured rectangle, and an element screenshot captures the selected element rather than the whole page. In Puppeteer, inspect the corresponding fullPage, clip, and captureBeyondViewport options. Disable full-page capture or remove and correct the clip or element target when the intended result is exactly the viewport. See Playwright screenshots and Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions.
5. Isolate the setting with a minimal capture
- Use a simple page and set a known viewport before navigation.
- Capture without full-page mode, clipping, or element targeting.
- Record viewport, screen, device scale factor, screenshot scale, and resulting file dimensions.
- Reintroduce the original device preset and capture options one at a time until the dimensions change.
This is a diagnostic approach based on the distinct documented controls; it is not a claim that a particular service or browser has a defect.

Check other capture APIs on their own terms
Option names and defaults vary across frameworks and hosted screenshot services. The Playwright and Puppeteer controls above are not interchangeable with every API’s parameters. For another provider, check its request parameter names, default viewport, browser version, device scale behavior, and response metadata. Compare two captures only after aligning the CSS viewport, screen, device scale factor, screenshot output scale, and capture region.

How much weight to give an old mismatch report
A Playwright issue opened by Jamesj001 on June 2, 2023 reported a 980 × 1812-pixel screenshot against an emulated Pixel 5 viewport of 393 × 727 CSS pixels, using Playwright 1.30.0; the report listed a device scale factor of 2.75. Those values do not form an exact simple multiplication, and the report describes one historical configuration. It is not evidence of a current general defect or a diagnosis for a different API. No. The output may be scaled to device pixels, represent the full page, or use a clip or element target. Compare the effective settings and capture region before concluding the viewport was ignored.
