If your Samsung tablet screen will not rotate, swipe down from the top to open Quick settings and tap the orientation control until it reads Auto rotate. If it is already enabled, test another app, check for an update, and restart the tablet before treating the issue as a device fault.
Turn Auto rotate on
Samsung tablets can be set to Auto rotate, Portrait, or Landscape. Auto rotate follows how you hold the tablet; Portrait and Landscape lock it to one orientation.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick settings. Swipe down again if needed to expand the panel.
- Find the orientation tile. If it says Portrait or Landscape, tap it until it says Auto rotate.
- Open an app that supports both orientations and turn the tablet without touching the display during the movement.
The Auto rotate icon is commonly blue when active, while fixed-orientation icons are gray, though appearance can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s rotation settings guide describes the available modes.
Find the control if it is missing
First expand Quick settings and check its additional pages; the orientation tile may not be on the first screen. If it is still missing, use the panel’s edit or customize controls to add or reposition it. The exact labels and layout differ across Galaxy Tab models and software versions. Samsung’s UK guide to Auto rotate describes editing Quick settings, while its US guide recommends checking the panel for the icon.

Check whether the app supports rotation
Some apps remain in portrait or landscape even when Auto rotate is enabled. Test a second app that normally supports both orientations, and turn the tablet without touching the screen. If only one app stays fixed, the setting may be working as expected rather than indicating a tablet-wide problem. Samsung notes that some apps open in a single orientation in its screen-rotation troubleshooting guide.
Update and restart the tablet
- Open Settings > Software update and install an available update.
- Restart the tablet. Depending on the model, use the Power button or open the power menu from Quick settings.
- After it restarts, test rotation again in an app that supports both orientations.
Samsung recommends checking for software updates and restarting as troubleshooting steps. Power-menu access can vary by device.

When to contact Samsung Support
If Auto rotate is on and several compatible apps still do not respond after the update and restart checks, contact Samsung Support for service guidance. Do the same if the screen is physically damaged. Although orientation detection involves the tablet’s internal sensors, this symptom alone does not establish that a particular sensor has failed; avoid attempting a sensor repair based only on rotation behavior.
Samsung lists a factory data reset as a later troubleshooting option. Treat it as a last resort: it erases personal information, so back up your data before proceeding and consider contacting support first.

Tablet-specific setting to skip
Samsung’s US guidance says its separate Home screen landscape option for the home screen is not available on tablets. Do not look for that phone-specific setting as a fix for Galaxy Tab rotation. Exact menus and options can vary by model and software version.
