If ₹ appears as boxes in a Puppeteer screenshot, first check whether the browser runtime can access a font containing the rupee glyph and whether the page actually loaded its chosen web font. The fullPage option controls how much of the page Puppeteer captures; it does not install fonts or supply missing characters.
Why the rupee symbol appears as boxes
A box or empty-glyph symbol usually means the selected font cannot render that character, or the intended font is unavailable when Chromium draws the page. In Linux and container deployments, the installed font files are part of the browser runtime. The exact fix depends on the operating system, image, CSS font stack, and fonts available there; there is no one package or family that is right for every setup.
This is the first cause to investigate, not a guaranteed diagnosis for every case. Puppeteer documents fullPage as a capture-scope option, while its screenshot method captures the page; neither documentation identifies full-page capture as a font or glyph setting. - Confirm the character and inspect its font. Verify the page content contains the actual rupee character, ₹, rather than a corrupted or substituted character. In browser developer tools, inspect the affected element’s computed
font-familyand check whether the intended font is being applied. - Check fonts in the environment running Chromium. If the screenshot works locally but not in a Linux server or container, inspect the deployed image’s installed fonts and add an appropriate font package for that distribution if needed. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide includes environment-specific setup examples. Those examples concern particular character sets; they are not a universal prescription for rendering ₹.
- Verify web-font loading. If the page uses a web font, check its network request and confirm it loaded successfully. Wait for font-loading work before capturing, but remember that waiting cannot install a missing font or make an unsuitable font support the glyph.
- Test the same rendering path. Capture a small page or element containing ₹ with the same CSS, browser, runtime, and output format as the failing job. Compare a viewport screenshot with a full-page screenshot. If both show boxes, investigate font availability and page rendering rather than page extent.
- Restart or rebuild after changing installed fonts. Make sure the running browser sees the updated font inventory. The exact command depends on the operating system and container image, so use the package and rebuild process for your deployment.
Wait for fonts before capturing
For pages that load fonts asynchronously, await the browser’s font readiness promise before taking a screenshot. This helps avoid capturing while font loading is still in progress:

Isolate the cause with a small comparison
- Local versus deployed: If the local capture renders ₹ but the deployed one does not, compare the runtime’s available fonts and font-loading requests.
- Web font versus fallback: Check whether the requested web font loaded and whether the fallback stack can render ₹.
- Viewport versus full page: If the glyph fails in both, page extent is unlikely to be the cause. If it differs, compare the page state and rendering conditions at the time of each capture.
These comparisons help narrow the fault; they are diagnostic checks, not benchmark results. The Puppeteer options documentation defines fullPage as capturing the full page, not as changing font rendering.

Will waiting for document.fonts.ready fix a font that is not installed?
No. It waits for font-loading work but cannot install a missing font.
