To hide scrollbars in a Playwright screenshot without disabling scrolling, pass temporary CSS with the style option to page.screenshot(). This affects the capture rather than requiring a permanent change to the page’s stylesheet. Playwright added the option in v1.41.
Hide scrollbars for one screenshot
Use both the standard scrollbar-width property and the non-standard WebKit pseudo-element rule. The first hides scrollbars while leaving elements scrollable; the second is a practical companion rule for browser compatibility.

});The CSS is supplied only for this screenshot call. Playwright’s screenshot API documentation says the injected stylesheet pierces Shadow DOM and applies to inner frames. The scrollbar-width property is not inherited, so the selector must match the elements whose scrollbars you want hidden; a rule applied only to an ancestor is not sufficient.
What the screenshot options do
style changes scrollbar visibility
The temporary stylesheet suppresses scrollbar display during capture. It does not require changing the application’s permanent CSS. Keep it capture-specific when the live interface should show scrolling controls.

fullPage changes capture extent
With fullPage: true, Playwright captures the full scrollable page rather than just the visible viewport, as described in the API documentation. That setting does not, by itself, promise that scrollbars will be hidden or visible.
Keep scrolling usable and the live interface accessible
Do not substitute overflow: hidden when the goal is only to hide the scrollbar but preserve scrolling: it changes overflow behavior. Also avoid applying scrollbar-hiding CSS to product-facing UI if users rely on visible controls to discover or operate scrolling. MDN cautions that hiding scrollbars can harm accessibility when a person has no other way to scroll; see its guidance for scrollbar-width. The injected screenshot style keeps the change scoped to capture.

When the screenshot still differs across environments
Scrollbar rendering can depend on the environment and what is being captured. The available documentation does not establish a complete visual-behavior matrix across browser engines, so verify the result in the engines and operating systems used by your project rather than assuming a rule will render identically everywhere.
- Compare Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit in the browser configurations you actually run.
- Check the operating system and its scrollbar presentation.
- Distinguish the page’s root scrollbar from a nested element with its own scrolling.
- Check whether the capture is the viewport or the full page.
A GitHub report opened on 2024-04-03 describes a full-page screenshot in Playwright 1.42.0 on Windows with Chrome that omitted the scrollbar; the reporter also tried ignoring --hide-scrollbars. That is one environment-specific report, not evidence of a universal current bug or fix. See the issue and reproduce the behavior in your own setup before drawing a broader conclusion.

Troubleshoot common outcomes
Scrollbar remains visible
- Confirm the installed Playwright version is v1.41 or later, which includes the screenshot
styleoption. - Check that the style string is passed as the
styleproperty of the samepage.screenshot()call that creates the image. - Ensure the CSS selector matches the scrollable element.
scrollbar-widthis not inherited, so styling only a parent may not hide a nested container’s scrollbar. - Try the screenshot in the project’s actual browser engine and operating system; do not treat the non-standard
::-webkit-scrollbarrule as universal.
Content no longer scrolls
Remove any overflow: hidden rule you added for the capture. Use scrollbar-visibility rules instead; scrollbar-width: none hides the control without disabling scrolling.
Viewport and full-page images do not match
Check the fullPage setting and test root-page scrolling separately from nested scroll containers. Full-page capture specifies the captured extent, not scrollbar visibility.
