If Playwright’s screenshot shows a login page instead of a protected Indian portal page, first check whether the browser context that takes the screenshot is actually authenticated. A login redirect usually means that context is unauthenticated, its saved state has expired, or the portal requires state that was not restored. The specific cause depends on the portal; the title alone does not identify its login system or rules.
Why Playwright redirects to the login page
Playwright browser contexts are isolated. Logging in in one context does not automatically authenticate another context that opens the page for a screenshot. The screenshot test must navigate using a context that has the portal’s valid authentication state.
A redirect is a useful symptom, not proof of one particular failure. The saved state could be missing or stale, the login flow may not have completed, or the portal may depend on a storage mechanism that was not restored. Portal-specific policies or requirements may also matter; without the portal’s URL and redirect trace, those causes cannot be determined in advance.

Set up and reuse authenticated browser state
Playwright’s documented pattern is to use a setup project to log in, confirm that authentication completed, save browser state, and load that state in the project that captures screenshots. The following is a project-configuration outline; replace the login flow and authenticated-page checks with selectors and URLs appropriate to the portal. - Run login in the same browser engine and environment as the screenshot. Confirm the final URL and an authenticated page signal. Clicking a sign-in button alone does not establish that login succeeded.
- Wait for authentication to finish before saving state. Some flows set cookies through multiple redirects. Wait for the final URL and, where possible, verify a visible signed-in control or protected-page element before saving.
- Save state and configure the capture project to use it. The project must create the context with the saved
storageState, and the protected-page navigation must use that configured context. - Check authentication immediately before taking the screenshot. Assert the expected protected URL or a portal-specific signed-in element rather than relying on a fixed delay.
- Regenerate state when it expires. A saved file is not a permanent login; rerun the setup flow when the portal rejects it.
For example, a screenshot test should follow this sequence: create the configured context, navigate to the protected URL, assert the expected URL or authenticated UI, then call the screenshot method. If the assertion fails, stop and diagnose the redirect rather than saving a screenshot of the login page as if it were the target.
Check storage, redirects, and cookies
Confirm the storage mechanism
Playwright’s standard saved authentication state covers cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication. Session storage is a less common exception: it is domain-specific and is not persisted across page loads by the standard storage-state mechanism. If the portal relies on session storage, save and restore it separately with an initialization script scoped to the portal’s hostname. Do not assume that missing session storage is the cause without checking the portal’s behavior.

Inspect the complete redirect chain
The browser follows redirects as part of navigation, so the initial request alone may not explain why the screenshot ends at login. Record the final URL and inspect the redirect chain and relevant network requests. Playwright’s network guide notes that cookie values come from the browser’s cookie store; passing a cookie header through route continuation does not override that store. Choose an authentication setup that fits the tests
- Shared state: Logging in once in a setup project and sharing the state can suit tests that do not modify shared server-side data and can safely use one account.
- Parallel tests that change server data: Use separate accounts per worker when concurrent tests could interfere with one another’s shared data.
- Multiple browsers: Do not assume authentication state created in one browser engine works in another if the portal’s authentication is browser-specific. Verify it in each target engine.
- API login: Use this only if the portal supports an authentication API suitable for the test. Playwright documents API-based authentication as an advanced option, not a universal workaround.
Use an authorized account and follow the portal owner’s automation policy. Do not attempt to bypass authentication controls.

Protect saved authentication state
Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat the file like a credential: exclude the authentication directory from source control, restrict access, and do not attach a real state file to an issue or bug report. If it has been exposed, follow your organization’s process for revoking or refreshing the affected session.
