If a Playwright mobile screenshot is larger in pixels than the configured viewport, set scale: 'css' on page.screenshot(). Its documented default is 'device', which captures at device-pixel resolution and can produce a larger image on a high-DPI emulated device. Then check the device preset, viewport overrides, and whether you requested a full-page capture.
Start by comparing the image with the CSS viewport
Check the saved file’s width and height, then compare them with the viewport width and height configured for the page. A screenshot that is a clean multiple of the viewport dimensions may point to device-pixel scaling, but that clue alone does not prove the cause. CSS pixels and image pixels are not necessarily one-to-one.
For page.screenshot(), Playwright documents scale: 'device' as the default. Device scale captures one image pixel per device pixel; on a high-DPI setup that can make the output larger than the CSS viewport. CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel.

Check the device preset and viewport override
A Playwright device preset can configure several settings together, including viewport, screen size, user agent, and touch behavior. If you spread a preset and then set a custom viewport, put the viewport after the spread so your override takes precedence.

You can also resize a page with page.setViewportSize(). Playwright documents that this resizes the page and resets screen. Set the viewport before navigation where practical: a site may not expect the dimensions to change midway through a session.

Make sure you are capturing the intended area
A normal screenshot captures the visible viewport. With fullPage: true, Playwright captures the full scrollable page, so the resulting image can be much taller than the viewport by design. Remove that option if you need a viewport-sized artifact; keep it when you need below-the-fold content too.

Check whether you use a screenshot assertion
page.screenshot() and expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() have different documented scale defaults: the direct screenshot API defaults to 'device', while the screenshot assertion API documents 'css'. If both paths produce images or baselines in your workflow, choose the scale explicitly for consistency. See the toHaveScreenshot API reference.

Does Playwright always make mobile screenshots exactly twice the viewport size?
No. Device-pixel output can be larger on high-DPI setups, but the documentation does not establish one fixed multiplier for every device or capture.
Which Playwright API should I use for a CSS-pixel screenshot?
For a direct capture, use page.screenshot({ scale: 'css' }). Set the option explicitly on the API you use whenever the output dimensions matter.
