To fix OBS audio crackling, first find out whether it is already present in the source or local recording, or appears only in the YouTube stream. Then check the audio format and stream configuration; reduce PC load or adjust network settings only when the relevant OBS or YouTube indicators point there. No single setting is a guaranteed fix, and a low-end PC should be tested under realistic conditions before you leave a 24/7 stream unattended.
Find where the crackling starts
Compare the same audio at three points: the original source, an OBS recording saved locally, and the YouTube preview or archive. This practical isolation method helps distinguish a capture or local audio-path problem from an output or delivery issue. YouTube recommends checking encoder audio and local archives when stream quality is poor; the comparison itself is a diagnostic approach, not a platform guarantee. - Note your OBS version, operating system, audio device and source, sample rates shown in the system and OBS, output audio settings, and whether the stream is live.
- Save a short local OBS recording without changing several settings at once.
- Listen to the source outside the stream if possible, then the local recording, then the YouTube preview or archive. Use the same material for each comparison.
- If the source itself crackles, investigate the source and its local connection or audio path before changing YouTube settings.
- If the source sounds clear but the local OBS recording crackles, focus on OBS capture, audio-device configuration, and the local audio path.
- If the local recording is clean but YouTube playback crackles or has delivery errors, check output configuration and stream health. This split is an inference from YouTube’s recommended checks, not a diagnosis by itself.
Check OBS and YouTube audio settings
For stereo live audio, YouTube’s published encoder settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and list AAC or MP3 as accepted audio codecs. YouTube’s error guidance also calls out incorrect sample rate and codec as possible configuration problems. Matching these requirements can prevent incompatibility, but cannot fix every source, driver, or routing fault. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings because platform specifications can change.
- Verify that the system audio device and OBS are using compatible sample rates; for stereo output, check against YouTube’s listed 44.1 kHz setting.
- Confirm the stream uses an accepted AAC or MP3 codec and the listed 128 kbps stereo audio bitrate.
- Use one audio stream. YouTube’s error guidance warns that multiple audio streams can cause ingestion problems.
- If a backup stream is configured, verify that its sample rate matches the primary stream.
Do not change every audio option at once. Make one adjustment, record again, and compare the result with the same source material.

Reduce PC load only when performance evidence points to it
OBS rendering and encoding consume system resources, and its performance guidance describes GPU overload as a possible source of OBS performance problems. That does not establish GPU load as a universal cause of OBS audio crackling. Check OBS warnings and CPU/GPU activity during a repeatable test before sacrificing video quality. - During the test, watch OBS status indicators and observe CPU and GPU use.
- Close only programs you recognize and do not need for streaming.
- If OBS indicates rendering or encoding trouble, simplify heavy scenes first.
- If the problem persists, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, changing only one option at a time. Record and listen again before keeping the change.
These are performance-troubleshooting measures, not a direct prescription for crackling. If the recording crackles while OBS reports no performance problem, return to the source and audio path rather than lowering video quality without evidence.

Separate internet and delivery symptoms from local crackling
Dropped frames point to an unstable connection or a video bitrate the connection cannot sustain, according to OBS. That can disrupt delivery, but it does not prove that network trouble caused crackling already audible in a local recording. If local audio is clean and YouTube reports stream-health problems, check upload stability and leave bandwidth headroom before changing video settings. OBS connection troubleshooting
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and advises 20% upload headroom to accommodate the primary stream, backup, and overhead. - If YouTube stream health reports delivery trouble, check that the connection is stable and that total stream bitrate leaves the recommended headroom.
- Lower video bitrate or resolution only if the connection or YouTube guidance indicates it is needed; test the change and recheck stream health.
- If crackling is also present in the local recording, do not treat network adjustments as a substitute for diagnosing the local source or audio path.
Validate before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended
Run a representative test using the actual audio source and typical scene movement. YouTube says, “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Listen to both the local recording and YouTube preview, and monitor stream health and errors. After a change appears to help, run a monitored longer trial under the conditions you expect during continuous streaming. There is no universal test duration or configuration that establishes that every low-end PC can sustain a 24/7 stream. Confirm the result before relying on unattended operation.
