The error identifies the login MySQL attempted; use its user, host, and password indicator to find the mismatch. Then confirm which local server and connection path your app reached before changing an account.
Read the entire error before changing anything
Capture the full message, especially the attempted MySQL user, the client host, and whether it says (using password: YES) or (using password: NO). MySQL’s connection troubleshooting guide explains that these details describe the attempted login. NO means the client did not supply a password; it does not mean MySQL rejected a password you entered.
First distinguish an authentication rejection from a connection failure. “Access denied” means the client reached a MySQL server that rejected the login. A stopped server, unreachable socket, or refused network connection is a different problem; investigate whether the server is running and the endpoint is correct rather than changing account credentials.
Confirm which MySQL server your client reached
A Mac can have more than one MySQL installation, such as an Oracle installer copy and a Homebrew installation. They may live in different locations and can compete for the same port. A password change against one server will not fix an application that connects to the other.

- Check which MySQL process or installation is running and whether it is the one you intend to use.
- Compare the application’s configured socket or port with the endpoint the server actually uses.
- If an unintended copy is running, stop it through the service mechanism for that installation before editing accounts. Oracle’s macOS installation notes describe the separate installation locations and show a Homebrew service-stop command as an example; the appropriate command depends on the installation.
Match the connection path to the account host
On macOS, localhost normally makes MySQL clients connect through a Unix socket. Specifying 127.0.0.1 selects TCP/IP instead. The MySQL manual documents this behavior in its connection troubleshooting guidance.
Test the same connection method your application uses. If the application uses a socket, testing TCP/IP alone does not reproduce its login. If one path succeeds and the other fails, focus on the host used for account matching and the client’s connection settings—not just the password. For TCP/IP, the account’s allowed host must match the hostname or address the client presents, even when both programs run on the same Mac.

Check the MySQL user and permitted host
A MySQL account is identified by both a user name and a permitted client host. The account 'root'@'localhost' and another account with the same user name but a different host are distinct login targets. Your macOS login name is also separate from your MySQL account name; one does not automatically create or authenticate the other. See Oracle’s account user names and passwords documentation.
Use the error’s user and host to identify the intended account. For an application’s routine development connection, prefer a dedicated MySQL account limited to the access it needs instead of using root. Do not broaden privileges or expose the server publicly to solve a local login mismatch.

Change a password only after identifying the exact account
If you can connect as an administrator and have established that the password is wrong, change it for the specific user-and-host account using ALTER USER. For example, the statement’s target should name the account you actually intend to update, such as 'appuser'@'localhost'; don’t copy that example unless it matches your account. The connected administrator must have the required account-management privilege. Oracle documents the syntax and privilege requirements in Assigning Account Passwords.
Do not begin a password-reset procedure until you have confirmed the active server and endpoint. Otherwise you may successfully change the password on a different local MySQL instance from the one your application uses.

Investigate authentication plugins only when the error points there
If the message indicates an unsupported authentication protocol or plugin, check both the server and client versions and the plugin configured for the account. Do not switch plugins blindly to make an error disappear. Oracle’s MySQL 8.0 secure deployment guide says caching_sha2_password is the default in MySQL 8.0, while mysql_native_password was the default in MySQL 5.7. Those statements describe those versions; verify your actual setup and follow the compatibility guidance for it before changing authentication.
Do not treat auth_socket as a general macOS remedy. MySQL’s socket peer-credential authentication documentation describes an implementation that uses SO_PEERCRED and is limited to systems such as Linux that support it.

A practical order for diagnosis
- Save the complete error, including user, host, and
using passwordstatus. - Confirm the MySQL server is running and identify which installation launched it.
- Check the configured socket or port against the endpoint your app is using.
- Reproduce the app’s actual path: socket via
localhost, or TCP/IP via127.0.0.1. - Match the attempted user and host to a MySQL account; keep the macOS login identity separate.
- Only then correct the specific account’s password, or investigate client/server plugin compatibility if the error indicates that issue.
