If MediaMTX accepts your source but YouTube shows an SSL error, times out, or receives no stream, check the onward forward connection separately from the source’s connection into MediaMTX. First confirm the path is available, then use the current YouTube Live URL and key, verify RTMP versus RTMPS and the port, and make sure the forwarded media contains both audio and video. Those checks target common failure points without assuming one cause from the error alone.

First, distinguish publishing into MediaMTX from forwarding to YouTube

MediaMTX handles two separate connections that are easy to describe loosely as “publishing.” A publisher such as FFmpeg or OBS can send media into a MediaMTX path. MediaMTX’s forward feature can then send media already available on that path out to YouTube. A successful local publish proves only that the source reached MediaMTX; it does not prove YouTube accepted the onward connection. MediaMTX describes its role as a media server and proxy that routes, converts, and forwards streams (MediaMTX introduction; publish streams).

Check the path and YouTube destination in order

  1. Confirm the source path is available. Check that the publisher is sending to the intended MediaMTX path and that the path has an active stream before diagnosing YouTube. If the source is absent, fix that first; there is nothing for forward to send.
  2. Copy the current YouTube URL and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the Stream tab or schedule a stream, then copy the URL and key shown for that stream. YouTube’s standard display may show ordinary RTMP; its RTMPS URL is revealed using the lock control in Stream settings. Do not rely on a hostname copied from an old example or configuration.
  3. Match the forwarding destination to the selected URL. Use the exact scheme and server YouTube supplied: rtmp:// is plain RTMP, while rtmps:// uses RTMP over TLS/SSL. MediaMTX’s forwarding syntax separates the URL from the stream key with #. Its documentation shows this illustrative pattern:
    paths:
      mypath:
        forward:
          - dest: rtmps://YOUR_CURRENT_YOUTUBE_URL#REDACTED_STREAM_KEY

Replace the example destination with the current URL from Live Control Room and put the key after #. This is MediaMTX configuration syntax, not a claim that YouTube’s URL-and-key fields should be concatenated the same way in every encoder. Never share a real key in a post, screenshot, support request, or unredacted configuration.

  4. Check the media tracks. Inspect the stream on the MediaMTX path that is being forwarded. It must contain audio as well as video. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams, so a connected source or apparent forwarding attempt is not enough to establish that the payload is acceptable.
  5. Retest and note the exact symptom. Record whether YouTube reports an SSL error, a timeout, or no incoming stream. These symptoms have different first checks; do not change several unrelated settings at once.

Fix an RTMPS invalid SSL certificate or SSL error

YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP that encrypts the stream using TLS/SSL (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS). Verify that both the scheme and server in the destination match the current RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. A destination that still uses rtmp:// is not the same as the supplied rtmps:// endpoint.

If the URL appears correct but YouTube still reports an SSL error, YouTube Help advises trying port 443 in the URL or encoder settings. Make this change only in a way that matches the current URL provided for the stream, then retry and observe whether the error changes.

MediaMTX documents a destFingerprint option for a destination with a self-signed or invalid RTMPS certificate. Its YouTube example also includes a certificate fingerprint and says the certificate was invalid when the example was checked. That observation and fingerprint can become stale. Do not copy the example fingerprint as a universal fix or use it to bypass certificate validation without verifying the current endpoint and certificate. If you need to investigate this option, consult the MediaMTX forwarding documentation for the version you run.

Fix a connection timeout

For a timeout, first recheck the server URL against the current YouTube Live Control Room value and confirm that the forwarding software and configuration support RTMPS if that is the selected endpoint. YouTube Help lists those checks, but a timeout alone does not establish a single cause. If it persists, preserve the relevant MediaMTX logs and configuration details before changing more settings.

If YouTube receives no stream

Check both ends of the relay independently: whether the source is present on the intended MediaMTX path, and whether the onward destination uses the current YouTube URL and key. Then confirm that the forwarded path has both an audio and a video track. A source connecting successfully to MediaMTX does not show that YouTube has accepted the forwarded stream.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream

This publishes a looping local file to a MediaMTX RTMP endpoint; it does not send the file directly to YouTube and does not by itself test MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding. Check the example’s path and endpoint against your setup. See MediaMTX’s FFmpeg publishing documentation for its context and supported protocols.

The official setup guidance covers the forwarding pattern and several high-value checks, but it does not map every MediaMTX log message to a specific YouTube failure. If the issue remains, gather these details with secrets removed:

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than troubleshoot a MediaMTX relay, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-live service. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does successful publishing to MediaMTX mean YouTube is receiving the stream?

No. The source-to-MediaMTX connection and MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding are separate links; check YouTube’s incoming-stream status as well as the local path.

Can I use the RTMPS URL shown in a MediaMTX example as-is?

No. Treat it as illustrative and copy the current URL and key from your YouTube Live Control Room.
