Start by checking which VMConnect session mode you’re using: Basic Session uses the Hyper-V display adapter, while Enhanced Session uses Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). If Enhanced Session works but Basic Session is blank, flickering, or stuck at a poor resolution, the problem is likely in the Basic display path—not necessarily a broken Windows desktop. GPU partitioning or passthrough is a separate configuration problem and won’t be fixed by changing the VM’s resolution.
Identify which Hyper-V display path is failing
Hyper-V Manager uses Virtual Machine Connection (VMConnect) to display a virtual machine’s desktop. VMConnect can connect in two different ways, and they rely on different display paths:

These paths help narrow down the fault. If Enhanced Session displays the desktop but Basic Session does not, focus first on the Basic display path or GPU pairing. If neither works, check whether the guest is running and whether its Windows sign-in and Remote Desktop configuration allow the session you are trying to use.
Check the display adapters inside the Windows guest
In the guest, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. The adapter names can indicate whether Windows sees a standard Hyper-V display path or a virtualized GPU:

- Microsoft Hyper-V Video is normally present when the VM does not have a paravirtualized GPU.
- With GPU paravirtualization, the guest also shows Microsoft Virtual Render Driver, paired with Microsoft Hyper-V Video or Microsoft Remote Display Adapter. The render-driver name reflects the host GPU.
If you expected GPU paravirtualization but do not see Microsoft Virtual Render Driver, review the GPU virtualization configuration and whether the required capability is exposed to the guest. An adapter name alone does not establish that the GPU is correctly configured or that acceleration is working; use the GPU-specific validation process for that setup.
Restore Enhanced Session Mode
Enhanced Session Mode relies on RDP, so Remote Desktop must be enabled in the Windows guest. If VMConnect does not offer an Enhanced Session sign-in prompt, check the guest’s Remote Desktop configuration first.

Check the Windows Hello sign-in setting
On Windows 10 version 2004 and later, and on Windows 11, a Microsoft account sign-in restriction can prevent the Enhanced Session sign-in prompt from appearing. Sign in to the guest through Basic Session, then turn off For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device. Sign out of Windows or restart the guest, reconnect in VMConnect, and check whether the Enhanced Session prompt appears.
Reopen VMConnect’s connection options
In VMConnect, open Show Options to choose display size and local resources for an Enhanced Session. If the options dialog is missing, open VMConnect independently and reconnect; Microsoft also advises trying it from an elevated command prompt. These settings affect the connection options, not GPU assignment.

Fix resolution, scaling, or a black screen by testing one path at a time
- Connect to the VM with Basic Session and note whether the desktop appears. This tests the Hyper-V display-adapter path.
- Connect with Enhanced Session, if available, and choose a display size in Show Options. Enhanced Session is resizable and high-DPI aware.
- Compare the results. If Enhanced Session works while Basic Session is blank, flickering, or unusably low-resolution, investigate the Basic display path or GPU pairing rather than treating the guest desktop as necessarily broken.
- If the intended setup uses GPU acceleration, check the guest’s Display adapters and follow the GPU assignment troubleshooting process instead of treating a VMConnect resolution change as a GPU repair.
There is no documented universal resolution maximum or performance figure to apply to every Hyper-V setup. The useful first distinction is which session mode is in use and whether the guest reports the expected adapter.

Enhanced Session can redirect resources such as clipboard, printers, audio, drives, and selected devices through VMConnect’s local-resource options. However, Microsoft documents that copying and pasting files between the host and guest does not work through VMConnect Enhanced Session over RDP.

For a file transfer, select an available host drive under Show Options and Local Resources, or use another supported transfer method. A failed file copy or paste by itself is not evidence that the video adapter is broken.
Troubleshoot GPU partitioning or passthrough separately
GPU partitioning, discrete-device assignment, and other GPU-acceleration configurations add hardware and driver requirements beyond the VMConnect display settings. If the goal is GPU acceleration—or the guest is missing its expected virtual render driver—use Microsoft’s GPU assignment troubleshooting workflow and confirm that the host Windows/Hyper-V release, guest configuration, GPU vendor support, and drivers are compatible.
- Use vendor-provided validation tools or scripts, such as SurveyDDA.ps1 where applicable.
- Follow the recovery steps for the specific assignment failure. Microsoft documents restarting in Safe Mode as a recovery action for some failures.
- Before buying hardware, verify support for the exact host release and GPU model with the GPU vendor and Microsoft’s guidance. A graphics card is relevant only if the intended setup needs GPU assignment or acceleration; it is not a general fix for a black screen, low resolution, or an unavailable Enhanced Session prompt.
Microsoft Learn documents the VMConnect session paths, guest adapter behavior, Enhanced Session prerequisites, and GPU troubleshooting workflow. The details can vary with Windows releases and GPU-vendor driver support.
