To fix Google Discover, first identify where you use it: the Google app, a browser at google.com on Android, or Chrome’s New Tab page. Each surface has different controls. Check its Discover toggle first; if the feed is stale, review Data Saver; if the stories are irrelevant, adjust personalization and interests.
Find the Discover feed you mean
Discover can appear in the Google app, at google.com in an Android browser, or on some devices by swiping right from the home screen. Chrome for Android has a separate Discover feed on its New Tab page. The steps below depend on which one is missing or behaving badly.
- Google app: Look for Discover in the app’s feed, commonly below the search box.
- Chrome for Android: Open a New Tab page and look for the feed beneath the shortcuts.
- Android browser: Visit google.com and check for Discover there.
Google says availability can vary by country and language, and it is updating Search services settings. Menu labels may differ by account, app version, or current interface.
If Discover is missing or switched off
Turn on Discover in the Google app
- Open the Google app and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Discover and turn the control on. Google’s current instructions are at Manage your Discover preferences.
Turn on Chrome’s Discover feed
- In Chrome for Android, open a New Tab page.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Customize new tab page.
- Open Discover feed and turn it on.
Google says New Tab page customization requires you to be signed in to Chrome and to use Google as the default search engine. These Chrome controls are separate from the Google app’s Discover setting. See Customize the New Tab page in Chrome.

If the feed appears but is stale
Check whether Data Saver is enabled. Google says Data Saver can stop some features, including Discover, from refreshing as often. That can explain less frequent updates, but it does not prove why a feed is blank or failing to connect. Google’s guidance is in Manage your Discover preferences.
If Discover shows irrelevant stories
Review the account’s personalization and interest controls rather than treating poor recommendations as a refresh problem. In Google’s Android instructions, look for Search Services History and Personalized recommendations, then use Manage your interests to follow or unfollow topics and remove or restore topics or sources. The exact route and labels may vary as Google updates these settings; consult Google’s Discover preference instructions and use the labels currently shown in your account.

If Discover still will not load
If the correct feed is enabled and the relevant settings look right, the official instructions cited here do not establish a universal next cause or fix for errors such as “Something went wrong” or “couldn’t connect to Discover.” Those messages do not identify a single diagnosis. Check that you are troubleshooting the correct surface, then consult Google’s current help for your account or device; avoid changing Chrome settings to solve a Google app issue, or vice versa.
