First identify what kind of playlist you have. If it is an HLS .m3u8 file, it must be valid UTF-8 text without a byte-order mark (BOM). Convert it from its actual source encoding to UTF-8, preserve its playlist syntax, and run FFmpeg using HLS input handling. If it is an FFmpeg concat script, do not treat it as HLS: use the concat demuxer instead. A Devanagari encoding problem is plausible, but the title alone cannot confirm it; malformed syntax, a BOM, the wrong input mode, or an unrelated streaming problem can produce failures too.

Identify the playlist format before changing the file

“Playlist” can refer to different text formats in an FFmpeg workflow. Check both the extension and the contents; an .m3u8 HLS playlist is not interchangeable with an FFmpeg concat script.

Format What to look for FFmpeg handling
HLS playlist Usually a .m3u8 file containing HLS tags and segment references. Pass it as an HLS input; consult FFmpeg’s HLS format documentation.
Concat demuxer script A text script with concat directives and file entries. Use the concat demuxer and its documented script syntax: FFmpeg concat demuxer.

FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes concat approaches, including the filter, demuxer, and protocol. The right option depends on the files and whether re-encoding is needed. Do not apply concat-script syntax to HLS or assume the formats behave alike.

Why Devanagari encoding can cause an HLS parse failure

Devanagari is a writing system, not a unique byte encoding. The visible text does not tell you which encoding produced the file. For HLS, RFC 8216 requires playlist files to be encoded in UTF-8 and prohibits a BOM; it says clients should fail to parse playlists that contain a BOM or do not parse as UTF-8. See RFC 8216, Section 4.1 (IETF RFC Editor, August 2017).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the playlist was saved in a legacy encoding, decoding its bytes as though they were UTF-8 can corrupt Devanagari text or prevent parsing. But encoding is only one possible cause. A BOM, invalid HLS syntax, wrong input handling, or a failure later in stream delivery can look like a playlist-related failure.

Convert and validate an HLS playlist

  1. Keep the original. Make a copy before editing or converting, so you can restore the source if the result is damaged.
  2. Confirm that it is HLS. Check the extension and inspect the opening lines for HLS tags and segment references. If it is a concat script with file entries and directives, skip to the concat section rather than converting it as HLS.
  3. Determine the actual source encoding. Use the origin or export settings of the file, or a reliable encoding inspection method. Do not guess from the fact that the content is in Devanagari.
  4. Convert from that encoding to UTF-8 without a BOM. Use a text editor or conversion tool that lets you select the source encoding and save encoding. Avoid changing tag spelling, segment references, URLs, paths, or line structure while converting.
  5. Inspect the saved file. Confirm the first lines still contain the expected HLS content, Devanagari characters remain readable, and all paths or URLs are intact. Check that the output is valid UTF-8 and has no BOM.
  6. Run FFmpeg with HLS input handling. Use the corrected playlist as the input to the command appropriate for your workflow. The exact command depends on whether you are reading, remuxing, or sending media onward; the supplied facts do not establish a command for your particular stream.
  7. Capture a complete retry. Record the FFmpeg version/build, full command, and complete error output. These details distinguish a parse failure from a later input, codec, protocol, network, or YouTube-ingestion problem.

If the file is an FFmpeg concat script

A concat demuxer script is not an HLS playlist. Follow FFmpeg’s documented concat script syntax and select the demuxer input method for that script. The listed inputs must have matching streams, including codecs and time bases, for the concat demuxer’s documented requirements. If the job instead needs filtering or file-protocol concatenation, use the approach suited to that workflow as outlined in the FFmpeg concat FAQ. A Devanagari-related display issue alone does not establish which encoding or concat method applies.

Separate playlist parsing from YouTube delivery

If FFmpeg now parses the playlist but the YouTube live stream still fails, the text conversion may have fixed one issue without fixing delivery. Diagnose the next error separately using the full command and log. The available information does not identify whether the remaining cause is stream ingestion, codec, protocol, network connectivity, or another configuration detail. Do not infer a YouTube-side cause from the original playlist symptom alone.

Common failure patterns and what to check

  • FFmpeg reports invalid UTF-8 or cannot parse the playlist: verify the actual source encoding, save HLS as UTF-8 without a BOM, and inspect the first lines for unintended character changes.
  • The file opens as text but FFmpeg rejects it: confirm whether it is HLS or a concat script, then use the corresponding input handling and syntax.
  • Devanagari text becomes garbled after conversion: restore the original and repeat the conversion using the correct source encoding; do not repeatedly convert an already altered copy.
  • Playlist parsing succeeds but the live stream fails: treat this as a separate delivery diagnosis. Preserve the complete FFmpeg error output and check the relevant stream, codec, protocol, and network details rather than continuing to change playlist encoding without evidence.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg troubleshooting tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud continues streaming with your computer off. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only, and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
