To fix FFmpeg failing to reconnect during a YouTube Live event replay, first determine whether FFmpeg is reading the replay or publishing a stream, then match the error to the input protocol and failure type. FFmpeg’s reconnect options apply to HTTP inputs in specific circumstances; they cannot repair an invalid or expired URL, and reconnecting at end-of-file may make a completed replay loop when it should stop. Without your command and full error log, there is no single verified fix.

Start by identifying what FFmpeg is doing

“Reconnect” can describe different failures. FFmpeg may be reading or downloading a replay, playing an input, or publishing a stream to YouTube. Reconnecting an input is not the same problem as recovering a failed output connection.

  • Reading a replay: diagnose the input URL, protocol, and read error. HTTP reconnect options may apply if the input is HTTP.
  • Publishing a stream: diagnose the output connection and publishing error. Input reconnect flags do not, by themselves, recover a failed output.
  • Playing a local file or another protocol: HTTP-specific options may not apply.

FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes inputs as resources supplied with -i, including network streams. Start by checking the actual resource supplied there rather than assuming that anything called a YouTube replay is a direct HTTP media input.

Collect the command, version, and complete error

Before changing flags, capture the exact command, FFmpeg version/build output, input protocol, and full log around the failure. These details determine which reconnect behavior is relevant.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  1. Copy the command that reproduces the failure, but redact stream keys, cookies, authorization headers, and signed URL tokens before sharing it.
  2. Capture the complete output of ffmpeg -version, including the build configuration.
  3. Save the log from the start of the run through the disconnect or error. Include the exact HTTP status or TCP/TLS error if shown.
  4. Identify whether -i receives a direct media or playlist URL, a webpage URL, or a non-HTTP resource. Do not assume a YouTube watch-page URL is itself a supported FFmpeg media input: the reviewed FFmpeg and YouTube playback guidance does not establish YouTube URL extraction or access behavior.
  5. Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the option you plan to use. Do not infer support from a command written for a different build or version.

Choose the HTTP reconnect option that matches the failure

FFmpeg documents these controls for the HTTP protocol. The key is to match the observed event—not to add every reconnect flag. In FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation, reconnect is described as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.”

Observed condition Relevant option What to check
HTTP input disconnects before it reaches EOF reconnect Use for an interruption before the input ends, not as a general cure for failed URLs or every kind of error.
TCP or TLS error while connecting reconnect_on_network_error Confirm the log shows a connection-time network error rather than an HTTP response or a later read failure.
HTTP response code such as 401, 403, 404, or a server error reconnect_on_http_error Select appropriate status codes or classes, such as 4xx or 5xx, only after inspecting the response and whether retrying could plausibly help.
Input is streamed or non-seekable reconnect_streamed Check whether this describes the actual input. It is not a substitute for diagnosing URL validity or access.
Input reaches EOF reconnect_at_eof Use only if treating EOF as an error and repeating is intentional, such as with a live or endless stream. A completed replay is finite content, so do not add this blindly.

Reconnect attempts are bounded by retry and delay settings. Set those deliberately, and verify the syntax and available options against the installed version’s FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation. Retrying every response indiscriminately can waste time without changing the outcome.

Interpret HTTP errors before retrying

A 401, 403, or 404 response—or a message indicating an expired or failed URL—calls for checking whether the URL is valid and whether the resource remains accessible through the permitted access path. Repeated retries cannot make a changed, inaccessible, or invalid URL valid. That is a troubleshooting inference from the limited purpose of reconnect controls, not a diagnosis of your particular failure.

  • If the error is an HTTP response, record its status and investigate the URL and access conditions before broadening the retry list.
  • If the error is a TCP/TLS connection failure, investigate the connection path and use the network-error branch only if the installed version supports it.
  • If the failure occurs at EOF, decide whether the replay is meant to end. A finite replay normally should not be forced to reconnect after it finishes.

Isolate playback and network conditions

YouTube’s general playback troubleshooting recommends trying another connection, reducing wireless interference or competition from other devices, adjusting playback quality, and reconnecting or restarting the playback device. These checks can help distinguish a playback or network condition from an FFmpeg-specific issue; they do not prove that the FFmpeg failure has the same cause.

  • Try another network connection if available, or temporarily reduce competing network activity.
  • If Wi-Fi interference is suspected, test with a wired connection or a different network. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one possible way to make a wired test; neither YouTube’s playback guidance nor FFmpeg documentation establishes that buying a cable fixes this FFmpeg problem.
  • Adjust playback quality where applicable and reconnect or restart the playback device.
  • Compare those results with the FFmpeg log. A playback check is a separate diagnostic, not proof that changing FFmpeg flags will resolve the issue.

Rerun a minimal command and compare logs

  1. Keep the original input and output behavior, but remove unrelated options that are not needed to reproduce the failure.
  2. Add only the reconnect option that corresponds to the recorded error, with retry and delay limits appropriate to the installed version.
  3. Run it again and compare the new log with the original, including whether the failure happens during connection, while reading, on an HTTP response, or at EOF.
  4. If the same error remains, return to the protocol, URL/access, and input-versus-output checks rather than adding more flags at random.

No particular command can be prescribed as a verified fix without the failing command, FFmpeg build, protocol, and log. A successful result should be confirmed by the reader’s own rerun.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your actual goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than to repair this FFmpeg replay input, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a fix for an FFmpeg input error or a camera-based live stream.
