Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA FFmpeg “Broken pipe” error means FFmpeg could not write to its output connection. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: by itself, it does not prove YouTube, your internet connection, or an encoding setting caused the failure. First line up the FFmpeg log with YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages; then fix the specific issue they identify.
What “Broken pipe” means—and what it does not
FFmpeg reports a broken pipe when a write to its output connection fails. That tells you the output stopped accepting data; it does not tell you why. The precise cause can vary by FFmpeg build, ingest configuration, network path, and stream state. YouTube and FFmpeg document ways to inspect ingest errors and configure output recovery, but those documents do not identify one universal cause for this exact message.
Do not immediately assume YouTube dropped the stream, your local internet failed, or a particular bitrate or codec is wrong. Preserve the evidence before restarting FFmpeg so you can distinguish an output-write failure from an input-loop or ingest problem.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The complete FFmpeg command, with the stream key and any other secrets removed.
- The full log around the first error, not just the final “Broken pipe” line.
- FFmpeg version and build information, which help establish which options and encoders are available.
- The failure timestamp and elapsed time since the loop or stream began.
- YouTube Live Control Room’s matching health messages, including their timestamps and whether they are critical or moderate. YouTube explains its timestamped live-stream errors in Live streaming error messages.
Diagnose the failure in order
1. Establish what stopped
Check whether FFmpeg exited, whether the input continued looping, and whether the failure occurred specifically while writing to the output. Note the sequence of log messages immediately before and after the first write error. Save the log before restarting; a restart can remove useful context or change the symptom.
2. Match the local log to YouTube’s health report
In YouTube Live Control Room, find the error closest to the FFmpeg failure timestamp. YouTube’s guidance covers errors involving stream format, bitrate, audio and video settings, keyframe frequency, resolution, and consistency between primary and backup streams. Correct the issue the actual message names; changing unrelated FFmpeg flags makes it harder to identify the cause.

If the Control Room reports a specific expected bitrate, resolution, or other setting, use that message for the selected ingest configuration rather than treating a generic encoder recommendation as universal. For example, YouTube’s “Incorrect stream format” guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio in the case it describes; follow the current error guidance for your stream.
3. Verify the encoder profile and protocol
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, video codec options including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency with a four-second maximum. These are guidance points, not a single profile that fits every quality or ingest configuration. Use the settings applicable to your stream and any more specific Control Room error.

YouTube Help says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current guidance, including the recommendation to test representative settings and monitor stream health during the event.
4. Check the endpoint and connection details
Verify that FFmpeg is connecting to the correct YouTube ingest endpoint and port for the chosen protocol. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance notes that an SSL error can result from connecting to the wrong port. Compare your endpoint and port with the current YouTube and encoder instructions rather than guessing or switching ports at random. Never paste a live stream key into a public log, forum post, or support request.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Test one change at a time
After making a change, test with audio and motion representative of the actual loop, then compare the new FFmpeg log and YouTube health report. YouTube recommends testing the chosen settings and monitoring stream health. A test that begins successfully does not establish that a long-running loop will stay connected, so observe the stream long enough to check for the original failure.

FFmpeg’s muxer documentation describes output recovery controls such as attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and recover_any_error, and includes an RTMP example that continues at real-time rate while attempting recovery after a temporary failure. Consult the FFmpeg muxer documentation for the version you have installed: available options and behavior can differ by release and build.

Recovery settings affect handling of output errors; they do not correct a YouTube ingest-format warning or prove that the input loop is working. Depending on the configuration, recovery can drop or delay media. The existence of these options is not a guarantee of seamless recovery, frame-accurate resumption, or that YouTube will keep the same live event open.
Before enabling recovery, capture a baseline log and decide whether dropped or delayed media is acceptable for your stream. If you test a recovery option, change one setting at a time and verify both the FFmpeg behavior and YouTube’s health report. Do not copy an option blindly from a different FFmpeg release or treat it as a substitute for correcting an error YouTube reports.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg logs a write failure and exits | The first output error, the surrounding FFmpeg log, and the matching YouTube health message | Use the timestamp to identify whether YouTube reports an ingest or configuration problem; otherwise investigate the output connection without assuming a cause. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect stream format | The exact format error and the selected protocol | Follow YouTube’s current instructions for that error; its guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for the case described. |
| YouTube reports a bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or audio/video issue | The value named in the Control Room message and your active encoder profile | Adjust the specific reported setting rather than changing unrelated flags. |
| An RTMPS connection shows an SSL error | The configured ingest endpoint and port | Check them against YouTube’s current RTMPS instructions; a wrong port can cause an SSL error. |
| The loop continues locally, but the live output fails | Whether the failure is at the output write and whether YouTube reports a matching health error | Keep the input and output symptoms separate; test output recovery only after saving the baseline log. |
| A recovery option changes the interruption but does not restore the expected live output | Whether recovery is supported in the installed build, and whether the ingest connection or event remains available | Check the installed-version documentation and Control Room status; recovery options do not guarantee the event can resume seamlessly. |
