First determine whether the audio is consistently early or late, or whether the gap grows during the demo. A stable, measured offset may be corrected with FFmpeg’s input option -itsoffset; growing drift calls for checking input timestamps, clock sources, frame-sync behavior and output timestamp handling instead. The available information does not identify this stream’s cause, so there is no safe, exact offset or universal fix to prescribe.

Identify fixed offset versus growing drift

Use a repeatable audio-and-video event

Choose a clear cue visible and audible in the demo, such as a spoken word paired with an on-screen action or a clap. Note whether the sound occurs before or after the corresponding visual event. Check again later in the same stream.

  • If the mismatch stays roughly the same, it is consistent with a fixed timing offset.
  • If the mismatch grows, it points toward an ongoing timing or clock issue rather than a single constant offset.

This distinction guides diagnosis; by itself, it does not establish the cause.

Inspect FFmpeg inputs and their timestamps

Write down the actual FFmpeg command, input order, capture devices and how each input timestamps its data. If audio and video come from separate devices, determine whether their timing derives from a common clock. FFmpeg says -isync adjusts target input timestamps by the difference in start times, and that the source timestamps should derive from the same clock for expected results. If either input lacks a start timestamp, FFmpeg makes no sync adjustment. See the FFmpeg documentation.

That makes -isync relevant only when its start-time and clock-source assumptions fit the setup. It is not a general correction for unrelated or unreliable input clocks.

Correct a measured, constant offset with -itsoffset

FFmpeg documents -itsoffset offset as an input option: it adds the specified duration to timestamps for that input, and a positive offset delays its streams. Place it with the input whose timing you intend to adjust. Measure both the direction and amount first; do not choose a value by guesswork. After changing the command, check the same audiovisual cue near the beginning and later in the demo.

For example, the option’s placement is part of the decision: it applies to the input that follows it, so confirm the command’s input order before adjusting anything. The correct sign and duration depend on which stream leads and by how much. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the option, but the available details do not establish a command or offset for this particular stream: FFmpeg documentation.

Check frame synchronization and output timestamps

FFmpeg’s video sync modes affect how output frames are handled. They are not interchangeable fixes for incorrect input timestamps.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • passthrough passes frames through.
  • cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach a requested constant frame rate.
  • vfr passes frames with their timestamps or drops them to prevent duplicate timestamps.
  • auto selects a mode based on the muxer’s capabilities.

FFmpeg also notes that the muxer may further modify timestamps. When investigating sync, account for the selected output mode and muxer rather than assuming a change to frame handling will repair the source timing. Details are in the FFmpeg documentation.

Use FFplay statistics to observe drift

FFplay statistics can help you observe audio/video synchronization drift while reproducing the issue. Its documentation describes audio, video and external master clocks, and notes that choosing a master clock is mainly useful for debugging. Treat this as a diagnostic aid: compare the playback behavior you observe with the actual YouTube Live output, which is what viewers receive. See the FFplay documentation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check Next step
The same audio lead or lag persists Which input is early or late, the measured gap, and whether the command applies an offset to the intended input Test a measured -itsoffset adjustment, then verify the cue throughout the demo
The gap grows over time How each input timestamps data; whether separate capture devices share a clock; input start timestamps; output frame-sync mode; muxer timestamp handling Investigate input timing and output behavior before trying a fixed offset
-isync has no apparent effect Whether both inputs have start timestamps and whether their source timestamps derive from a common clock Check those prerequisites; FFmpeg makes no adjustment if either input lacks a start timestamp
FFplay appears synchronized but the live stream does not Whether the diagnostic playback reproduces the same inputs and output path as the live stream Verify the change against the actual live output; FFplay statistics alone do not establish what YouTube viewers receive

What is known—and what is not—about this stream

The title identifies a YouTube Live product demo, but that alone does not establish a YouTube-specific setting or platform-side cause. Without the FFmpeg command, installed build, input devices, logs or a sample stream, the cause, offset direction and amount, and whether drift accumulates are unknown. To diagnose the specific case, collect those details along with the timing observations above.

A user’s description of a related issue—“I am having serious audio and video synchronization problems with ffmpeg when trying to either record or stream live screen capture and audio capture.”—illustrates the kind of symptom people report, but it does not identify a technical cause. Or let it run in the cloud

If your product demo is a prerecorded video that should loop as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option; it does not troubleshoot or correct sync in an FFmpeg capture setup. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
