Windows 10 can pair with a Bluetooth speaker, headset, TV, projector, or wireless display and still fail to connect, connect without sound, disconnect repeatedly, or show a black screen. The quickest fix depends on where the connection fails: discovery, pairing, device selection, driver operation, or the wireless display feature itself.

Work through the sections in order. After each major change, test the device again rather than applying every fix at once.

First checks for both Bluetooth audio and wireless displays

  1. Restart the computer and the accessory. Turn off a Bluetooth speaker or headset, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. For a TV or wireless display adapter, disconnect its power for at least 30 seconds.
  2. Move the devices close together. Keep a Bluetooth accessory within a few feet of the PC during pairing. Remove USB 3.0 hubs, external hard drives, and other high-interference devices temporarily.
  3. Check Airplane mode. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Airplane mode. Turn Airplane mode off. If Bluetooth has its own switch, turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
  4. Install pending Windows updates. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and restart if Windows requests it.
  5. Disconnect the accessory from other devices. A headset may automatically reconnect to a phone, tablet, or another computer and then refuse a new Windows connection. Disable Bluetooth on those devices while testing.

Fix a Bluetooth device that does not appear

Put the speaker, headphones, keyboard, or other accessory into its actual pairing mode. Turning it on is not always enough. Most devices use a Bluetooth button or a long press of the power button until an LED flashes or a voice prompt announces pairing mode. Consult the device’s manual if the indicator is unclear.

If Bluetooth is missing from this page, the PC may not have Bluetooth hardware, the adapter may be disabled, or its driver may be broken:

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth. Look for a wireless adapter such as Intel Wireless Bluetooth, Realtek Bluetooth, or a similar entry.
  3. If the adapter has a down-arrow icon, right-click it and choose Enable device.
  4. If it has a warning icon, right-click it and choose Properties. Read the message under Device status.
  5. Also check Network adapters for a combined Wi-Fi/Bluetooth adapter and Other devices for an unidentified Bluetooth device.

Download the Bluetooth driver from the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page, not from a random driver-download site. Choose the driver for the exact Windows 10 edition and computer model, install it, and restart Windows.

Remove and pair the Bluetooth device again

A saved pairing record can become invalid after a driver update, firmware change, or device reset. Remove the old record before pairing again:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  2. Select the problem device and click Remove device, then confirm.
  3. Turn the accessory off and on, or reset its Bluetooth pairing list according to its manual.
  4. Click Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth and pair it again.

If Windows asks for a PIN, try the code shown on the accessory or use the code supplied in its manual. Common legacy codes include 0000 and 1234, but do not repeatedly guess if the device does not specify one.

Bluetooth says connected but there is no sound

Windows may connect a headset or speaker but continue sending audio to the laptop speakers, monitor, or a previous headset.

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Open Sound settings.
  2. Under Output, choose the Bluetooth device. Do not select an entry labelled only as Hands-Free unless you specifically need its microphone mode.
  3. Use Device properties to check that the output is not muted and the volume is raised.
  4. Scroll down and select App volume and device preferences. Check that the affected application is using the correct output device and is not muted.

Some headsets expose two playback profiles: Stereo and Hands-Free AG Audio. Stereo normally provides better playback quality; Hands-Free enables the headset microphone but reduces audio quality and can cause application conflicts. In a meeting application, select the headset microphone only when needed, or use the computer’s microphone while keeping the Bluetooth device on its stereo output profile.

To make the selection permanent, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound. On the Playback tab, right-click the Bluetooth device and choose Set as Default Device. On the Recording tab, set the desired microphone separately.

Bluetooth audio cuts out, stutters, or disconnects

Likely cause What to try
Power management turns off the adapter In Device Manager, open the Bluetooth adapter’s Properties > Power Management tab and clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, if the option exists.
Low headset or speaker battery Charge the accessory fully. Low battery can cause repeated reconnects before Windows reports an obvious error.
Interference or range Test within 3 feet of the PC. Move away from USB 3.0 devices, Wi-Fi routers, and metal obstructions.
Several paired devices compete for connection Turn off nearby Bluetooth devices, remove unused pairings, and pair the problem device again.
Driver or firmware problem Install the latest Bluetooth driver from the PC manufacturer and check the accessory manufacturer’s firmware instructions.

You can also restart the Bluetooth service. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, select Restart, then open Properties and set Startup type to Automatic if it is disabled.

Run Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooter

Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Bluetooth, choose Run the troubleshooter, and apply any suggested fix. For sound problems, run Playing Audio from the same page.

Microsoft has moved or retired some troubleshooters in different Windows 10 builds. If Bluetooth is not listed, use the manual checks above and inspect Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and Device Manager directly.

Connect to a wireless display in Windows 10

Wireless display connections use Miracast, which is separate from ordinary Bluetooth pairing. A TV or projector can appear in the Bluetooth settings and still not support wireless screen projection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the TV, projector, or wireless display adapter.
  2. Open its input or source menu and select the screen-mirroring option, such as Screen Mirroring, Miracast, or Wireless Display.
  3. On the PC, press Win + K. Alternatively, click the Action Center icon on the taskbar and select Connect.
  4. Select the display from the list and approve the connection on the display if prompted.
  5. Press Win + P and choose Duplicate, Extend, or Second screen only.

If Win + K reports that the PC cannot connect, check Miracast support. Press Win + R, type dxdiag, select Save All Information, and open the saved text file. Search for Miracast. A result such as Available indicates support; a result saying the graphics driver or Wi-Fi driver does not support it points to a hardware or driver limitation.

Miracast generally requires compatible Wi-Fi and graphics hardware, even when the PC is connected to the network with Ethernet. Update both the Wi-Fi driver and graphics driver from the computer manufacturer’s support page. A generic Microsoft display driver can prevent wireless display support until the manufacturer’s driver is installed.

Fix a wireless display that connects and then drops

  1. Restart the PC and the display adapter or TV.
  2. Disconnect VPN software temporarily. Some VPN or security products interfere with local discovery.
  3. Move the PC closer to the display and test with large downloads, cloud synchronization, and video calls paused.
  4. Remove the saved display connection. Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, select the display under Mouse, keyboard, & pen, or other devices or Wireless displays & docks, choose Remove device, and reconnect with Win + K.
  5. Update the Wi-Fi and graphics drivers, then restart.

For a black, frozen, or incorrectly sized projection, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. The screen may blink and Windows may play a short alert sound. Then press Win + P and select the desired projection mode.

Reset the network stack as a last software step

Use this only after simpler fixes. It removes and reinstalls network adapters and can remove saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN adapters, and custom network settings.

  2. Select Network reset, choose Reset now, and confirm.
  3. Restart the computer when Windows prompts you.

For a narrower reset, open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin) and run:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /flushdns

Restart after the commands complete. These commands are more relevant to network discovery than to a damaged Bluetooth driver, so do not expect them to fix a missing Bluetooth adapter.

When the problem is probably hardware

The PC may have a hardware fault if the Bluetooth adapter repeatedly disappears from Device Manager, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth fail together, the adapter shows a device-start error after a correct driver installation, or the accessory works normally with another computer.

For a desktop, check that an internal Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card is seated correctly and that its USB header cable is connected if the card requires one. For any PC, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can provide a useful test. A USB Miracast adapter or wired HDMI connection is a better alternative when the computer’s hardware does not support wireless display.

Can I use Bluetooth to connect a wireless display?

Usually no. Bluetooth pairing and Miracast wireless display are different technologies. Use Win + K or Action Center > Connect for a Miracast display, and check that the PC’s Wi-Fi and graphics hardware support Miracast.

Why is Bluetooth audio connected but silent?

Windows is often using another output device. Open Sound settings and select the Bluetooth speaker or headset under Output. Also check App volume and device preferences and the Playback tab in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.

How do I fix Bluetooth headphones that keep disconnecting?

Charge the headphones, test them close to the PC, turn off nearby Bluetooth devices, disable Bluetooth adapter power saving in Device Manager, restart Bluetooth Support Service, and update the Bluetooth driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Win + K do in Windows 10?

Win + K opens the Connect panel, where Windows lists compatible wireless displays and some wireless audio devices. It is the normal shortcut for starting a Miracast display connection.

The Bottom Line

For Bluetooth audio, the most effective sequence is: put the accessory in pairing mode, remove the old Windows pairing, pair it again, select it as the sound output, and update the Bluetooth driver if the problem remains. For a wireless display, use Win + K, not the ordinary Bluetooth pairing screen, and update both Wi-Fi and graphics drivers when Miracast fails. If the adapter disappears from Device Manager or the PC lacks Miracast support, software fixes cannot supply missing hardware.
