To delete a passkey stored on a Windows 11 PC, go to Settings > Accounts > Passkeys and select Delete passkey beside the entry. That control removes only the copy saved on that device. If the passkey is not in that list, or removing it from the list does not stop it from signing you in, the passkey is stored somewhere else, such as your Microsoft account, a work or school account, or a synced password manager. Each of those has its own removal path.

Remove a passkey saved on this PC

Windows Hello can save a passkey on the device itself. Microsoft’s saved-passkeys support article describes this location as the one the Windows Settings page manages.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts, then select Passkeys.
  3. Find the entry you want to remove and select Delete passkey beside it.

The Passkeys page also has Advanced options, which lets you configure which passkey services are available on the PC. If that option is missing or greyed out, your organization may have disabled it. Contact your IT administrator in that case.

Find out where the passkey is actually saved

Microsoft’s passkey guidance says that passkey management is handled by the provider that stores the credential. Microsoft’s saved-passkeys article puts it this way: “Passkey management is handled within your passkey provider.” The table below shows where to act for each common location.

Where the passkey is saved Where to remove it What removal does
Windows Hello, on this PC Settings > Accounts > Passkeys > Delete passkey Deletes the copy stored on this device only.
Personal Microsoft account Advanced Security Options; expand the passkey entry and choose Remove The passkey can no longer sign in to that Microsoft account. The device copy, if any, needs separate removal.
Work or school account Remove the account entry at mysignins.microsoft.com, then delete the passkey where it is stored, such as Windows Hello Passkeys Removes the account registration and the stored copy. Both steps may be needed.
Microsoft Password Manager, Google Password Manager, or Apple iCloud Keychain The password manager’s own controls May remove the passkey from every device that syncs with that manager. Confirm before deleting.
Phone, tablet, or physical security key Managed through that provider, as Microsoft’s passkey guidance states; Microsoft’s Windows steps do not give a removal path for this case Not stated in Microsoft’s Windows passkey steps. Use the device or key’s own provider settings.

Personal Microsoft account passkeys

For a personal Microsoft account, a passkey can exist as a registered sign-in method even after you delete the copy on your PC. Open Advanced Security Options, expand the passkey entry, and choose Remove. Once removed, that passkey cannot be used to sign in to the Microsoft account, so make sure another sign-in method works first.

Work or school account passkeys

For a work or school account, Microsoft’s guidance involves two separate removals. First, remove the account entry at mysignins.microsoft.com. Second, delete the passkey where it was saved, such as Windows Hello Passkeys on this PC. If either option is unavailable, your organization’s policy may limit it, and IT can confirm which controls apply to your account.

Passkeys saved in a password manager or on another device

Microsoft names Microsoft Password Manager, Google Password Manager, and Apple iCloud Keychain as examples of synced credential managers. A synced passkey can work across several devices, so removing it from the manager may affect those devices too. Decide whether you want to delete the credential itself or only remove the account’s registration of it, and use the manager’s controls to do that.

Why Credential Manager is not the answer

Windows Credential Manager is useful for saved website, connected-application, and network credentials. Microsoft’s passkey removal instructions do not use it. If you look for a passkey there and do not find one, that does not mean the passkey was deleted. Use Settings or the provider that stores the passkey instead.

Before you delete an old passkey

If you are removing a passkey because you replaced a device, set up and test the new passkey first, then remove the entries that no longer apply. This matters most for synced passkeys and personal Microsoft accounts, where deleting the wrong copy can cut off a sign-in route.

Common problems and what they usually mean

  • The passkey does not appear under Settings > Accounts > Passkeys. It is probably stored by a Microsoft account, a work or school account, or a password manager. Check the locations in the table above.
  • Delete passkey is missing. Your organization may have restricted passkey management. Ask IT.
  • The passkey still signs you in after you deleted it. Another copy remains, most often in a synced manager or as a registered sign-in method on the account. Remove those as well.
  • The Passkeys page is unavailable. Check that Windows is up to date and that you are signed in with the account that owns the passkey.

Microsoft Password Manager and Edge

Microsoft says Microsoft Password Manager is rolling out and is available in Microsoft Edge version 142 and newer when you use a personal profile. Work profiles and older Edge builds may show different menus. Microsoft’s support articles do not display a publication date in the material reviewed, so if your screens do not match these steps, follow the current instructions from the provider you use.
