If your OBS stream disconnects when you switch from a mobile hotspot to broadband, first set OBS’s network binding to Default, then check that both connections can sustain your stream’s upload bitrate. OBS does not guarantee that one session will move between networks without interruption. Test the exact switch in an unlisted broadcast before relying on it for an important event.

The guidance below is general: your carrier, ISP, location, router and network conditions affect the result, and the official guidance cited here does not establish India-specific hotspot speeds or a universal failover procedure.

1. Set OBS to use the default network interface

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
  2. Set Bind to IP to Default, then apply the change.
  3. Reconnect and test the stream. If the setting was manually bound to an address associated with the hotspot, that binding is one possible cause to investigate; a network switch can change the active interface, route or local address.

OBS recommends the Default setting in its connection troubleshooting guide. Check the OBS log and dropped-frame indicators as you test rather than assuming the network binding is the cause.

2. Check upload capacity on both connections

Test upload speed on the hotspot and broadband under conditions similar to your actual stream. Download speed does not tell you whether the encoder can send video reliably; YouTube notes that upload speed is often lower and recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Other devices and household traffic can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS.

OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point, not a guarantee. YouTube also publishes codec-, resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations. These are separate guidelines: for a stream that may use either connection, choose a conservative bitrate both paths can sustain, with headroom, and verify it in a rehearsal. A lower bitrate can reduce picture quality; it cannot repair a lost connection.

For YouTube’s H.264 guidance, 1080p at 30 fps has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate; 720p at 30 fps has a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended bitrate. These are encoder settings, not evidence that either connection at your location can maintain those rates.

3. Adjust OBS network options if capacity varies

  1. In Settings → Advanced → Network, consider enabling Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).
  2. Test the option during an unlisted stream while monitoring OBS and YouTube. OBS says it can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but this may reduce quality and does not fix the underlying network problem.
  3. If you use Windows, OBS also lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users find helpful. Test them individually; OBS does not present them as guaranteed fixes.

Do not change multiple settings at once during an important broadcast. A controlled test makes it easier to identify which change helped or whether the interruption persists.

  • Unlocked, portable hot spot for 5G and 4G LTE around the world, certified with AT&T requires a 5G compatible SIM card. Ask your 5G wireless network provider for the best 5G data plan for your needs

4. Rehearse the switch and monitor stream health

  1. Schedule or start an unlisted YouTube test. Use representative audio and video movement, not just a static screen.
  2. Confirm the preview in YouTube Live Control Room and watch its stream-health messages.
  3. Monitor OBS’s dropped-frame counter while streaming. It can help distinguish a connection issue at the encoder from buffering reported by an individual viewer.
  4. Switch from hotspot to broadband the same way you plan to during the real broadcast. Note whether OBS reconnects, whether YouTube reports an interruption, and how long recovery takes.
  5. Repeat under realistic conditions before relying on the setup. Keep a local recording or a separately configured backup plan for a critical event.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and continuously monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Its guidance warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; it does not promise a seamless transition between these two networks. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s live streaming tips.

5. Distinguish a network switch from encoder failover

A single OBS encoder changing its internet path is not the same as a configured primary and backup encoder. YouTube describes testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable when a backup encoder is set up. That procedure does not establish that one OBS session will continue seamlessly when you move from hotspot to broadband.

Your YouTube stream key and stream URL identify and reach the stream destination; they do not choose the computer’s active network interface. If the interruption coincides with changing networks, investigate routing, binding and connection capacity before resetting a key. See Manage live stream settings.

6. Check software, Wi-Fi and network equipment

If the default binding, suitable bitrate and a controlled test do not resolve the issue, OBS lists several other possibilities. Work through these checks:

  • VPN or security software: Test whether the VPN or security software is interfering with the connection. Do not leave protection disabled as a general fix.
  • Network-prioritization or optimization utilities: Review utilities that manage traffic or network adapters, since they may affect routing or connections.
  • Network drivers: Check for current drivers from your computer or motherboard maker.
  • Wi-Fi and equipment: Investigate unstable Wi-Fi, modem or router problems, and faulty network equipment.
  • ISP-side congestion or routing: If local checks fail, contact your ISP; the cause may be outside your control.

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide describes these as possibilities, not a diagnosis for every disconnection.

7. Make the broadband leg more stable where possible

If your computer and router have compatible Ethernet ports, try connecting the computer to the broadband router with an Ethernet cable instead of relying on Wi-Fi for that part of the setup. You may need an adapter if either device lacks a compatible port. A wired connection can help stabilize the broadband leg, but it does not ensure that OBS will transfer to it seamlessly from a hotspot.
