Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst check whether the black image appears in OBS’s preview or local recording. If it does, troubleshoot the scene, capture source, and VPS display session before changing Oracle Cloud firewall rules. If the preview and recording look right but the remote stream is missing or unstable, investigate OBS’s output and the network path instead. OBS sends its output to the selected streaming service; it does not relay the stream itself.
There is no single confirmed fix for every Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) VPS: the right capture setup depends on the operating system, graphical session, source, and instance configuration. The checks below separate those causes so you can narrow the problem without changing unrelated settings.
Identify where the picture goes black
In OBS, inspect the preview and make a short local recording. This simple test separates a capture problem from a streaming connection problem.
| What you see | Investigate first | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OBS preview and local recording are black | Scene and source visibility, capture method, display session, permissions, and graphics stack | That OCI networking is broken |
| Preview and recording work, but the remote stream has no video | Selected destination, service state, authentication, outbound connectivity, and OBS logs | That capture is broken |
| OBS reports dropped frames or an unstable connection | Network stability and capacity to the streaming endpoint, and whether the configured bitrate is suitable | That the network caused a black local preview |
| A hardware encoder is unavailable | GPU shape, driver, OBS build, and encoder compatibility | That capture is fixed or broken |
OBS’s stream connection guidance distinguishes output and connection trouble from image capture issues. A black local preview points first to the source and display path, not to an OCI ingress rule.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the OBS scene and capture source
Confirm the intended source is visible
- Make sure the intended source is present in the scene and is enabled and visible.
- Open its properties and confirm it targets the intended display or window.
- Check that another source, crop, or transform is not obscuring the image.
OBS’s capture troubleshooting guide covers source selection and capture-specific issues. If the chosen source does not match the display or window OBS can access, the preview may remain black even while OBS itself is running.
Determine what display session OBS can see
On a Linux VPS, identify whether the graphical session is X11 or Wayland, how OBS is launched, and whether a remote or virtual display is actively producing pixels. An SSH shell by itself does not create a desktop for OBS to capture. A headless VM needs a working display path compatible with the chosen capture source; the exact arrangement varies by distribution and remote-display method.

Check OBS’s Linux installation guidance for its graphics prerequisites, including OpenGL 3.3 or later and X server requirements. If OBS runs outside the session that owns the desktop, verify that the process can access the session and selected display.
Verify graphics and OCI GPU configuration
Once you know OBS is running in the intended session, confirm its graphics stack initializes there. Do not assume a general-purpose VPS includes a GPU, or that a GPU setting alone can provide a desktop image.

- Check the instance’s actual shape and whether it includes the GPU capabilities you intend to use.
- Check that the shape is available in the relevant region and availability domain, and that your tenancy has the required service limit or quota.
- Confirm that the installed operating-system image and driver configuration support the GPU and OBS build.
Oracle documents Compute shape availability, an example GPU workstation configuration, and platform image considerations. The workstation tutorial is an example, not a universal OBS setup or a recommendation for a particular shape. These sources do not establish a best OCI shape or benchmark OBS stream quality.
Treat capture and encoding as separate stages
Capture supplies image frames; an encoder compresses frames that already exist. After the preview works, choose an encoder supported by the actual hardware, drivers, and OBS build. OBS’s hardware encoding guidance discusses options such as NVENC. Selecting a hardware encoder cannot create pixels from an inaccessible or nonexistent display.

Check OCI networking only for output symptoms
If the preview and local recording are good but OBS cannot connect to the service or drops frames, check the configured destination and the instance’s outbound path. Follow the protocol and destination your streaming service actually requires; do not open broad ports as a speculative fix for a black preview.

- Network security group rules
- Subnet security lists
- The operating system’s firewall rules
Oracle Linux images may use firewalld. Check the OS firewall as well as OCI network rules rather than assuming one layer controls all traffic.
Review logs and change one thing at a time
Inspect the OBS log for source initialization, display or graphics, encoder, and connection errors. Some security or firewall products can affect capture or connectivity; OBS describes possible conflicts in its known application conflicts guide. Make one targeted change, then retest the preview, recording, or connection symptom that prompted it. This makes it easier to identify which change helped or introduced a new problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live desktop or camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
