If FFmpeg stops when it reaches a promo clip whose filename contains spaces, check the playlist line that names that clip. With FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, the media paths inside the text playlist have their own quoting and escaping rules; quoting the playlist filename after -i only protects that argument from your shell. For a path containing spaces, FFmpeg’s documented form is file '/path/to/promo clip.mp4'. That is the first thing to inspect—not a confirmed diagnosis, since the exact command and error are not available.
First identify which playlist FFmpeg is reading
The advice below applies when the command uses the concat demuxer, commonly with -f concat -i list.txt, or when the list begins with ffconcat version 1.0. A shell-generated command, an M3U8 playlist, or a wrapper’s own list format may follow different rules.
A concat-demuxer playlist is a text script with a file directive for each media file. Its path syntax is separate from shell quoting. For example, putting quotes around list.txt in -i "list.txt" does not quote the filenames written inside that list. FFmpeg’s format documentation says, “Path to a file to read; special characters and spaces must be escaped with backslash or single quotes,” and illustrates a space-containing path as file '/mnt/share/file 2.wav' (FFmpeg format documentation).

- Open the exact list used by the running command. Find the directive for the promo file where processing stops. Check that the filename, extension, capitalization, and directory match the actual file.
- Quote a path containing spaces according to concat syntax. For example:
file '/videos/store promo.mp4'
Do not assume that escaping the command-line argument also escapes this line in the script. - Handle other special characters using FFmpeg’s documented syntax. If the path itself contains a single quote, follow the escaping form in the format documentation rather than applying shell-quoting rules by guesswork.
- Check the demuxer’s safe-path setting. The concat demuxer defaults to
safe=1. Its documented safe paths are relative, contain no protocol specification, use only letters, digits, period, underscore, and hyphen, and do not begin any component with a period. A space is outside that character set. For a trusted, locally controlled list,-safe 0allows filenames that fail this validation:ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy output.mp4
This relaxes path validation; it does not repair a misspelled or missing path. Do not use it with a list or paths you do not trust. - Verify path resolution and access. Relative paths must resolve from the FFmpeg process’s actual working directory. Check that every referenced file exists there and that the process can read it. A path that works in an interactive shell may fail when launched by a service or script running elsewhere.
Check whether the promo files can be concatenated this way
Getting past a filename error does not guarantee the sequence is compatible. The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If the clips differ, the next error may concern stream layout or timestamps rather than the path.

Separate local playlist errors from YouTube publishing errors
Read the log around the first failure. If FFmpeg does not open the list entry or media file, investigate the list syntax, safe-path validation, file location, and permissions. If it opens files and advances through the sequence, inspect the later output messages: the failure may occur during encoding, connection, or publishing rather than at the filename.
For YouTube HLS ingestion specifically, YouTube documents HTTP 400 for a malformed URL or an unparseable or unsupported playlist, and HTTP 401 for a corrupted or expired cid parameter. Those server responses do not, by themselves, prove that a local filename was parsed incorrectly. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

Collect the details needed to confirm the cause
- The complete FFmpeg command, with credentials and stream keys redacted.
- The exact playlist line that fails, plus the list’s first line if it has an
ffconcatheader. - The filename and directory structure, and whether the paths are relative or absolute.
- Your operating system, shell, and the output protocol or destination type.
- The output of
ffmpeg -versionand the complete error excerpt, including the first error rather than only the final summary.
Never post your YouTube stream key. FFmpeg’s documentation is regenerated nightly for the newest revision, so compare it with the behavior and version of the build you actually have installed; the documentation landing page explains this at FFmpeg documentation.
