First check whether FFmpeg is still producing video after the first file ends. A rerun stream can go black because its input stops or the next file fails, but the symptom alone does not identify the cause. Compare FFmpeg’s process and output with YouTube’s stream status before changing ingest settings.
Find where the video stops
Use observations from both FFmpeg and YouTube to separate a source problem from an ingest or display problem. Note whether audio continues: audio without video points toward a video-input, mapping, or output issue, while both stopping may indicate that the process or ingest has ended.
- Save the evidence. Record the exact FFmpeg command, installed FFmpeg version/build, input playlist, and a log covering the transition after the first video. Redact the YouTube stream key before sharing anything.
- Check the process and output. After the first file ends, determine whether FFmpeg exits, remains running but stops emitting video, or continues producing video. Inspect the log for packets or frames after the transition, and check whether audio continues. If practical, inspect a local output or recording as well.
- Compare with YouTube. Review stream status and health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. The LiveStreams API distinguishes
active, error, andinactivestates; these are useful evidence about ingest, but a black viewer does not by itself prove an ingest failure. See the LiveStreams API documentation.
Check whether the input actually loops
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option. Its value 0 means no looping; -1 means infinite looping. Confirm that the option applies to the input you intend to repeat, rather than assuming that its presence anywhere in the command affects every file. See FFmpeg’s documentation.
For one source that should repeat indefinitely, the documented setting is -stream_loop -1. That is not a universal fix for a multi-file playlist: the right setup depends on how the files are supplied and transitioned. Check that the playlist reaches the next valid file, that its path and quoting are correct, and that the file can be read. Do not assume a particular concat method or stream-copy setup is appropriate without checking the inputs.

Distinguish looping from real-time pacing
Looping determines whether an input repeats. Real-time pacing determines how quickly FFmpeg reads it. FFmpeg documents -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1; it does not repeat a finished file. For prerecorded video being sent as a live feed, check whether pacing is needed as well as looping, and verify where each input option applies in your command.
Verify video streams and output mapping
If FFmpeg stays alive but YouTube turns black at a file boundary, inspect the sources and output selection across that transition:

- Confirm that every file contains a video stream and that the next file is the one FFmpeg is actually opening.
- Check the command’s stream selection and mapping. Confirm that the intended video stream remains part of the output after the first transition.
- Look at post-transition logs and, where possible, the local output. If local video has also stopped, focus on inputs, transitions, and mapping before changing YouTube settings.
- Avoid assuming that stream copy or a particular playlist/concat approach will work for files with different streams or formats. The command and sources determine what is valid.
Check YouTube ingest after confirming local video
If FFmpeg continues producing valid video locally while the YouTube player is black, check that the configured ingest address and stream name correspond to the current YouTube stream, then review YouTube’s stream status and health messages. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring health messages during the event. Its encoder guidance says, “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Read YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. HLS has separate requirements, so first confirm which ingest protocol the command uses. If you are using HLS, consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements: they include a media playlist, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and a single encoded stream. Do not apply HLS-specific requirements to an RTMP workflow.

Match the symptom to the next check
| What you observe | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits when the first file ends | Input exhaustion, loop placement, playlist entries, file paths, and transition errors. |
| FFmpeg remains alive, but video stops; audio may continue | Whether the next source has video, whether it opens successfully, and whether output mapping still selects video. |
| FFmpeg produces local video, but YouTube is black | Configured ingest address and stream name, YouTube status and health messages, and the protocol-specific requirements for the ingest method in use. |
| YouTube reports active ingest, but viewers still see black | Compare FFmpeg’s local output with YouTube’s health information; an active state alone does not establish that the viewer-facing picture is correct. |
What to provide for a precise diagnosis
The exact repair cannot be determined from the black-screen symptom alone. To narrow it down, gather the full command with the stream key removed, FFmpeg version/build output, the input playlist, logs around the first-file transition, whether FFmpeg exits, whether audio continues, whether local video remains, and YouTube’s reported stream status and health messages.
