If a link preview has no image, first make sure the page publishes a relevant, absolute HTTPS image URL in its initial HTML <head>. When a page-specific image is unavailable, use a representative content-type default, then a carefully chosen site-level fallback—not the same generic logo on every page. Keep og:title, og:type, and og:url present too, and check the HTML that a crawler can actually fetch.
Why og:image is missing
A missing preview image usually means the page does not expose a usable og:image value where a social crawler can read it. The tag may be absent, its URL may be relative or inaccessible, or a fallback rule may fail to produce a value for pages without their own image. A page can look correct in a browser and still lack metadata in its initial HTML if the tags are added only after client-side JavaScript runs.
The Open Graph protocol lists og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as the four required properties for every page. Google Search Central also advises choosing an image that is relevant and representative of the page, rather than a generic image, an extreme aspect ratio, or a low-resolution asset.
Choose a fallback in a relevance-first order
Resolve the image for each page using a deterministic priority order. “Deterministic” means the same page and content state produce the same intended URL, rather than depending on an unpredictable random choice or an empty field.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Page-specific image: Use the article hero, product image, or another asset that directly represents the page.
- Content-type default: If the page has no suitable specific image, use a documented default for that type of content—for example, a designed article card for articles or a documentation card for documentation pages. The image should still fit that page’s subject.
- Site-level fallback: If there is no suitable content-type default, use a first-party image made for social sharing that represents the site. A site logo alone is not a good universal fallback unless the page is actually about that brand or site.
This order gives every page a predictable fallback without making unrelated pages look identical. If a fallback would misrepresent the page, improve the image selection rule rather than silently using an unrelated image.
Add the metadata to the initial HTML
Render the resolved image URL in the document head on the server, in a static HTML file, or through another method that places it in the initial HTML response. Do not rely on client-side code that runs only after a crawler has received the page. The Open Graph reference example uses an absolute image URL in the head.
<head>
<title>A Page About Example Topic</title>
<meta property="og:title" content="A Page About Example Topic">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/articles/example-topic">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/example-topic-share.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A labeled diagram illustrating example topic">
</head>
Replace the example page and image URLs and the descriptive text with values for the actual page. The sample uses article as its type; select a type that fits your page. The image URL must be absolute and use HTTPS. Include text in og:image:alt that describes what the image depicts, not a promotional caption.

Keep page identity and fallback selection aligned
Generate the title, type, URL, and image for the same page instance. A fallback image should not come from one page while og:url identifies another. If the page-specific image is missing, the fallback resolver should return the appropriate content-type or site-level URL rather than leaving the content value empty.

Add optional image details when they are stable
The Open Graph specification documents optional properties for image metadata. Add dimensions, type, and secure URL when the values are known and stable; do not guess them or let them drift from the actual asset.
<meta property="og:image:secure_url" content="https://example.com/images/example-topic-share.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
Those numbers are illustrative only; use the real image’s dimensions. The protocol also defines og:image:url as identical to og:image. It is not a different fallback mechanism, so adding it does not compensate for a missing or unusable image URL.

Decide whether to add X-specific image tags
Yoast’s X/Twitter functional specification documents Open Graph fallback behavior for many X tags when X-specific tags are absent, including handling for twitter:card. If you need an X-specific card presentation, publish twitter:card and twitter:image as appropriate. If you do not add those tags, Open Graph metadata may provide the fallback described by that specification. Do not assume every platform interprets missing tags identically.
Check what the crawler receives
Inspect the fetched HTML rather than relying only on the browser’s rendered page. This command prints matching Open Graph lines from the response; replace the URL with the affected page:

- Open the image URL itself and confirm it returns the intended image rather than an error or an unrelated page.
- Confirm the address is an absolute HTTPS URL and can be reached by external crawlers.
- Check that the image is relevant, representative, and sufficiently clear; avoid extreme aspect ratios and low resolution.
- Read the image alt text and verify that it accurately describes the image.
- Test at least one page with a specific image, one that uses a content-type default, and one that reaches the site-level fallback.
A screenshot can help with a visual check of what a page displays, but it does not prove that the Open Graph tags exist in the initial HTML. Treat metadata inspection and visual review as separate checks.
Or skip the browser setup
For a visual capture of a page while checking its presentation, ScreenshotNeo can return an image from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a metadata editor; you still need to implement and validate the tags above. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshoot a still-missing preview image
The tag does not appear in the response
The page template may not render the metadata, or the fallback value may be empty. Trace the page’s image selection from its specific asset to the content-type default and then the site-level fallback. Confirm each branch returns a URL and that the resulting tag appears in the initial HTML head.

The tag is present but the image does not load
Open the exact URL from og:image. Check for a typo, a relative path, a non-HTTPS address, an inaccessible asset, or a URL that responds with something other than the intended image. The URL must be accessible to external crawlers, not just to a logged-in editor or a browser with special access.
The preview uses the wrong image
Compare the resolved URL with the page-specific, content-type, and site-level choices in order. Check for conflicting or duplicated metadata values as well as a fallback rule that selects an unrelated logo or image. Verify that the image’s alt text describes the selected image rather than another candidate.
The page looks right in a browser but not in a preview
Check the initial response. If the metadata only appears after JavaScript runs, move its generation into server-rendered or static initial HTML. A visual screenshot alone cannot verify what a crawler received in the document head.
The preview does not change after an update
After changing the image URL, rerun the target platform’s preview or debugger. Cache timing differs by platform and is not standardized by the sources cited here, so do not assume that a correct new tag will replace an older preview immediately.
Keep fallbacks maintainable
Store the priority rule in a shared page-rendering or metadata layer instead of hand-maintaining unrelated template copies. Keep the chosen fallback URL, the image file, and its descriptive alt text together where practical. When a page gains a representative hero or product image, the specific asset should take priority without requiring a separate manual edit to its social metadata.
Include the three fallback cases in routine checks: a page with its own image, one that relies on a content-type default, and one that reaches the site-wide fallback. That catches both missing metadata and a rule that accidentally makes every page use the same image. When replacing an asset at the same URL, verify the resulting image directly and retest the platform preview if it continues to show an earlier version.
