On Fitbit, pace is a workout metric for supported activities such as running. When the activity uses GPS, Fitbit bases distance—and therefore the pace reading—on GPS data; without a GPS fix, distance may initially be estimated from steps and stride length. The GPS options and where pace appears depend on your Fitbit model and the app experience.

What pace means on Fitbit

Pace is a measure shown for supported GPS-tracked workouts, including runs. Fitbit’s official help does not establish one pace unit or display format that applies to every model, so check the units and workout screen on your own device rather than assuming every Fitbit presents pace identically.

Pace depends on the distance recorded during the workout. Fitbit’s ordinary step-based distance estimate is steps × stride length = distance traveled. For a GPS-tracked activity, Fitbit uses GPS data for distance instead of steps. If you start moving before GPS connects, the activity may use step-based distance until a signal is established. Google explains Fitbit’s distance calculation and GPS behavior.

Do you need GPS to track pace?

For GPS-based workout distance and pace, yes: the activity needs an available GPS source. Depending on the device and setup, that may be built-in GPS, GPS from a connected phone, or a dynamic GPS mode. Not all Fitbit models have the same GPS capabilities or settings. Check the GPS instructions for your Fitbit model.

As one model-specific example, Fitbit’s help documents GPS settings for the Charge 6, including built-in and phone GPS. This does not mean every Fitbit has built-in GPS or shows live pace in the same way. Built-in GPS can affect battery life, and a device that loses GPS during a workout may not switch to another GPS type until the next workout. See Google’s GPS setup guidance.

GPS workout guidance applies to activities involving physical distance outdoors, such as running, walking, hiking, and biking. Fitbit’s GPS workout intensity map can show pace, distance, and heart-rate zones. Google lists the GPS workout details.

How to record and find your pace

Before and during the workout

  1. Check your model’s GPS options and enable the appropriate mode for the exercise you plan to record. The available choices and setup steps vary by device; use Fitbit’s model-specific GPS instructions.
  2. Start outdoors and wait for GPS to connect before you begin moving. Tall buildings and wooded areas can delay connection.
  3. If your setup uses phone GPS, keep the phone near your Fitbit so it can provide location data during the workout.
  4. Record a supported activity, such as a run, and check the workout screen for the metrics available on your model.

After the workout

After syncing, review the activity details in the Google Health app. Run trends and activity details may include distance, duration, pace, average heart rate, and splits. The Run dashboard is limited to particular Pixel Watch models; other Fitbit devices can access running goals and records through the app, but the dashboard and metric controls vary by device and app context. Google describes the available run details and dashboard scope.

Why your Fitbit pace may look wrong

A practical way to troubleshoot a pace reading

  1. Confirm GPS is enabled for the selected exercise and set to a mode your device supports.
  2. Start outside and wait for GPS to connect before moving.
  3. If using phone GPS, keep the phone near your tracker during the activity.
  4. Sync the Fitbit, then review the saved workout details rather than comparing them with step-based daily distance.
  5. If a setting or screen is missing, follow the official setup instructions for your specific model: GPS setup and run details.
