To fit a BenQ projector image to a screen, align the projector physically, match the source’s resolution and aspect ratio to the screen, then use optical zoom and lens shift if your model has them. Refocus after adjustments. Use keystone or corner correction only to fix remaining shape errors: digital correction can reduce image clarity, and the available controls vary by model.

Before adjusting: identify the screen and projector

Check your BenQ model number and the screen’s aspect ratio, such as 16:9 or 4:3. The adjustment controls, menu paths, and permitted ranges differ between projectors. For example, BenQ’s W4100i quick-start guide documents test-pattern, zoom, focus, and lens-shift adjustments, while its AK700ST manual describes model-specific Auto Screen Fit and Corner Fit functions.

Use the projector’s own guide to confirm which features it supports. Lens shift is not available on every model, and its range is limited; a substantial shift in one direction can also affect the range available in another. See BenQ’s lens-shift guidance.

Adjust the image in this order

  1. Match the source to the screen

Set the computer, streaming device, or player to an active resolution with the same aspect ratio as the screen. BenQ also recommends checking that the desktop and active signal refresh-rate modes match. If the source format is wrong, projector geometry controls may not solve the underlying mismatch. See BenQ’s screen-fit guidance.

  2. Position the projector square to the screen

Place or mount the projector so the image is as perpendicular to the screen as the installation allows. Before using digital correction, aim for an image that covers or extends just beyond all four screen corners. BenQ notes that a more off-center projector needs more image beyond the screen to allow for correction.

  3. Set image size with optical zoom

If your model has optical zoom, use it to make the projected image the right size. A test pattern can make the screen edges easier to see; the W4100i guide, for example, directs users to Advanced Menu > Installation > Test Pattern for its pattern. Menu names and availability may differ on your projector. Do not use keystone as a substitute for setting the image size.

  4. Move the image with lens shift, if available

Use lens shift to position the image without tilting the projector when the model provides it. Follow the model’s lens-shift limits; if the image cannot reach the screen using the available range, revisit projector placement rather than forcing a correction beyond the supported range.

  5. Focus the image

Adjust focus after the initial setup and again after moving the projector or changing zoom. BenQ’s AK700ST manual specifically calls for focusing after those adjustments.

  6. Correct residual shape errors

If the image is still trapezoidal, use the projector’s keystone controls for the remaining vertical or horizontal tilt. Then use Corner Fit, if supported, to adjust individual corners. BenQ’s golf-projector guidance puts 2D keystone correction before corner fit. Keep digital correction to the minimum needed: keystone uses scaling and compression, which BenQ says can compromise image clarity.

When the picture still does not fit

  • The image is the wrong shape or cropped: Recheck the source’s active resolution and aspect ratio as well as the projector’s image settings. Confirm that the source’s desktop and active signal refresh-rate modes match.
  • The image is too large or too small: Check optical zoom and the projector’s placement guidance. If the zoom range cannot produce the required size, the projection distance or lens throw range may not suit the screen; keystone is not a size control.
  • The image is shifted: Use lens shift if the model supports it and the image is within its permitted range. Otherwise, adjust the projector’s physical position.
  • Automatic correction fails: The remedy depends on the model. For the GV50, BenQ recommends checking Auto fit to Screen settings, ensuring the calibration pattern is visible and unobscured, and making sure the physical screen is smooth and flat. These are GV50-specific troubleshooting steps; see BenQ’s GV50 troubleshooting guidance.

Auto Screen Fit is model-specific

Do not assume every BenQ projector has Auto Screen Fit. On the AK700ST, the function adjusts focus, zoom, and aspect ratio, and BenQ’s manual pairs the process with Corner Fit. For that model, the manual says the projected blank image should overflow all four screen borders before adjustment, then the adjustment pattern should be brought within the screen border by changing distance, angle, or zoom.

At distances within 2.2 m, it specifies maximum projection angles of 10° for 16:9 or 16:10 screens, and 20° for 4:3 or 1:1 screens. These are AK700ST instructions, not general limits for BenQ projectors. Consult the manual for your model before relying on automatic fitting.
